The Pastor’s Page March 19, 2006Third Sunday of LentIf I say that I am “doing 7 out of 10” and I am talking aboutthe Ten Commandments, am I all right? You know, some people have asked the question just aboutthat way. They feel that, as long as they are following a majority of theLord’s commandments, they are doing just fine. How foolish. When we put the “bare minimum” of what we need to do inany situation, we are bound to mediocrity at best or failure atworst. After all, think about the implications:1. I am a road worker. I put 7 out of 10 parts of road mixtogether. The road will crumble in less than a year.2. I am a construction worker. I put 7 out of 10 girders inplace. The building will come down while it is still in theconstruction phase.3. I am a gardener. I use 70% of the fertilizer that I shoulduse or 70% of the water. The grass is doomed to witherand die.So, what makes us think that we can build a spiritual life ifwe decide some of God’s laws are not important to follow?Spiritually, we will crumble, collapse, wither. Is that really what we want?Do we not want, rather, to live in God’s eternal kingdom? If we do, we should give ourselves 100% to God.We should embrace His commandments. We should lookat them not as stumbling blocks, but rather as building blocks.Embracing and living the commandments, we can further thekingdom of God on our earth.Doing so will get us the words that we truly wish to hearfrom our Lord: “Well done, good and faithful servant!”Why am I writing these words this week? The answer is quite simple. This is the Third Sunday of Lent.We began our Lenten journey on March 1st with thecelebration of Ash Wednesday. In the past 19 days, ourspiritual resolve may have faded. We may have begun withthe best of intentions. But we may have given up the thingswe promised God to do.We might have already adopted the attitude, “Well, a fewweeks of Lent, rather than the entire season, is better thannothing.”Is it?If we are slipping in our resolve, let usrenew our Lenten promises to God.Let us give God 100% this year!Priests and deacons have served the Diocese of Gary for anumber of years now. Others have served in the territory thatis now the Diocese of Gary. Please pray for those men whohave been called to God and whose anniversaries of deathare this week:March 19: Rev. Milan F. Bach (1995)March 22: Rev. George C. Muresan (1996)March 24: Rev. Peter A. Biegel (1960)Page 5BE A 100% PARISHIONERPeople need to be registered, contributing andregularly attending parishioners at a church so thatthey might receive the sacraments. Many times aperson will contact a church because he or shewishes to be married, have a child baptized, or anyother number of reasons.Without being registered — and attending Massregularly — permission is often denied. If anyone wishes to be married or have a childbaptized at St. Thomas More, that person would haveto be a parishioner for at least six months beforebeginning the process of preparation for marriage orbefore a child could be baptized. Why? Because the Church requires registrationand contribution to ensure that a person is fulfillingsome of the most basic obligations of the faith:attendance at Mass and contributing to the work ofthe Church. If you are an adult and are not yet registered onyour own, we highly encourage you to register as amember of the parish so that you will be ready toreceive sacraments as you need.ON THE LIGHTER SIDEPresident George W. Bush was passing through anairplane terminal and he noticed an old man in a long whiterobe, with a long white beard and long white hair carryingtwo stone tablets in his arms.He approached the man and asked reverently, "Aren'tyou Moses?"But the man would not acknowledge him and continuedwalking. President Bush asked him again, ''Aren't youMoses?''The old man continued ignoring the president, eventurning his back on the him.The President grabbed the man's arm, looked him rightin the eye, and insisted, "Answer me — Aren't youMoses?"The man replied, "I'm not saying a thing! The last time Ispoke to a Bush I ended up roaming the desert for 40years!"Gospel Communications International—Used By Permission

St. Thomas More ParishOn StewardshipOver the past several years, the Stewardship Commissionhas presented ideas about Stewardshipand the giving of your time, talent and treasure. We would like to give you a true/false quiz to seewhat you have learned:Munster, IndianaAnd to those who sold doves he said, “Takethese out of here, and stop making my Father’shouse a marketplace.” His disciples recalled thewords of scripture, “Zeal for your house willconsume me.”Jn 2:16-17QUESTIONS1. Stewardship is the returning to God, throughgifts to Church and charity, the excess of ourtime, talent, and treasure that He has given tous.2. Saints are model stewards.3. It is easy for all Catholics to be good stewards.4. We are good stewards when we devote time tothe people we encounter in our daily lives.5. You must be over 21 years old and under 65years to be a good steward.6. You are a model Steward. You give generouslyof your time, talent and treasure.ANSWER KEY1. False. We should gratefully give a generousfirst portion of our time, talent and treasure toGod.2. True. Though all of the saints are very different, the one thing they have in common istheir love of the Lord and their willingness touse their gifts in His service.3. False. It is a struggle against selfishness andor greed. It is hard for many people today toaccept the challenge of being a Christiansteward.4. True. Stewardship is not just something wedo on Sunday. It must become a part of ourdaily lives.5. False. All Christians can be good stewards.Remember we all learn best by example.6. Only you know the answer to this question. That simply means that weall have a role and duty in this, doesn’t it? Or does societytoday consider individualism, materialism, consumerism, secularism, rationalism, scientism, and hedonism moreimportant? As we continue our Operation Rice Bowl journeylet us remember in prayer that the ability to workto earn a living is a right of all people.
