Circular No.DateDoc ID.08-7719 December 2008A163851ContactLorraine Hayward02 4428 4178lorraine.hayward@dlg.nsw.gov.au<strong>2009</strong> MINISTERS' AWARDS FOR WOMEN IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT<strong>In</strong> 2008 the former Minister for <strong>Local</strong> <strong>Government</strong> and the Minister for <strong>Women</strong>established an awards program as part of <strong>In</strong>ternational <strong>Women</strong>’s Daycelebrations to recognise outstanding contributions and achievements made bywomen in local government in NSW to and for the local government sector.<strong>In</strong>formation about last year’s award winners is available on the Department’swebsite at www.dlg.nsw.gov.au.The aims of the awards are to:• recognise and increase public awareness of the contribution of women tolocal government in NSW• encourage more women to take on leadership roles in local governmentin NSW.Nominations are invited for the <strong>2009</strong> awards program. There are four categoriesof award:1. Member of staff – metropolitan council2. Member of staff – regional/rural council3. Elected representative – metropolitan council4. Elected representative – regional/rural council.Council categories are based on the Australian Classification of <strong>Local</strong><strong>Government</strong>s and Department of <strong>Local</strong> <strong>Government</strong> group numbers. A list ofcouncil categories for these awards is attached.GuidelinesSelection criteriaNominations must address the selection criteria, which have been kept broad toencourage as wide a range of nominations as possible. This should includespecific achievements and/or examples that relate to criteria 2 below.1. 22. Nominee must have demonstrated a significant contribution to localgovernment in NSW in some way through one or more of the following:a. A specific action/event or a series of actions/eventsb. A sustained focus on an issue bringing about a positive, tangibleresultc. Leadershipd. <strong>In</strong>novatione. Achievements with an internal management focusf. Achievements with an external community focusg. Achievements that have encouraged the participation of women inlocal government.Nominations may highlight the contributions made by women towards anyaspect of local government, not just for contributions towards initiatives forwomen.Nomination processNominations can be made by completing and forwarding the attached two-pagenomination form by post to Sue Anderson, Policy & Research Branch,Department of <strong>Local</strong> <strong>Government</strong>, Locked Bag 3015, Nowra, 2541 or by emailto sue.anderson@dlg.nsw.gov.au or by fax to 02 4428 4178.Please note:• Nominations must be endorsed by two people other than the nominee• Nominees must agree to the nomination• Previous nominees are eligible for nomination although previous winnersare not eligible for nomination• Nominees are encouraged to attend the awards presentation• The cost of nominees attending the presentation is to be borne by thecouncil• The nominee’s supervisor and/or manager must be made aware of thenomination to facilitate attendance at the event• Details of award winners and their nomination may be made available onDLG, Office for <strong>Women</strong>, LGSA, LGMA and ALGWA websites and maybe used in media releases• Supporting information may be attached but should be kept to aminimum (resumes and references should not be attached). 3Selection processIt is anticipated that a panel from DLG, the Office for <strong>Women</strong> and ALGWA, aswell as LGMA (for staff nominations) or LGSA (for elected representativenominations), will judge the nominations and select the winners for eachcategory based on the selection criteria. Selection panel members will not beeligible for nomination.Presentation of awardsThe awards will be presented by the Minister for <strong>Local</strong> <strong>Government</strong> and theMinister for <strong>Women</strong> at a function to celebrate <strong>In</strong>ternational <strong>Women</strong>’s Dayaround 8 March <strong>2009</strong>.
