AliRoot Framework UsageA software toolShahid AslamFirst School on LHC Physics, 12-30 October 2009

New state of matter at ALICE• Collisions in the LHC will generate temperatures morethan 100 000 times hotter than the heart of the Sun.• Physicists hope that under these conditions, the protonsand neutrons will 'melt', freeing the quarks from theirbonds with the gluons.• This should create a state of matter called quark-gluonplasma, which probably existed just after the Big Bangwhen the Universe was still extremely hot.• The ALICE collaboration plans to study the quark-gluonplasma as it expands and cools, observing how itprogressively gives rise to the particles that constitutethe matter of our Universe today.

Starting AliRoot Session• To start up AliRoot after installation just type• $ aliroot• this starts AliRoot in interactive mode. When the root [0]prompt appears, you can start an AliRoot interactivesession by creating the standard menu• root[0] .x menu.C• The macro menu.C invokes the AliRun::Init() method. Inturn this calls the configuration file Config.C where theconfiguration of the detector and several simulationparameters can be specified.• When the initialisation is finished the root prompt apearsagain and the Root control bar appears.

Simulation• The response function of ALICE detector can besimulated within AliRoot for dierent physicscases.• So AliRoot is interfaced with dierent Monte Carloevent generators, like Pythia, Herwig and Hijing.• Response functions of the ALICE sub detectorsare simulated from the hit information in theactive volumes provided by the transport codes.• Finally ALICE raw-data les are generated.

Reconstruction• AliRoot reconstruction framework performs theclusterization, particle trajectory reconstruction andparticle identication from the raw-data of the ALICEdetector.• reconstruction allows for detector alignment, calibrationcorrections and detector quality assurance.• Reconstruction output consists of ALICE ESD (eventsummary data) files.• Metadata information of reconstructed events in the ESDle (like for instance the muon multiplicity) are stored inthe Tag database of AliRoot.

Analysis• The analysis framework of AliRoot allows forbuilding a train of dierent analysis tasks that willselect specic events and will perform specicphysics analysis.• The results of the analysis will be stored in asmall size files called AOD (Analysis ObjectData).• The Config.C file is fundamental for the analysis. In this file you have to write all the things youwant to take into account.

MUON spectrometer• The oine software for simulation, reconstruction and analysis of the muonspectrometer is shared by ve modules ofAliRoot: MUON, EVGEN, EVE, HLT andPWG3.

MUON• This module contains most of the softwarethat has been developed in AliRoot for themuon spectrometer. It contains the codewhich is needed to perform the main goalsof AliRoot: simulation and reconstruction. The present document will mainly focus onthis development.

EVGEN• This module contains the parameterized eventgenerators of AliRoot and the virtual classes forinterfacing AliRoot with the Monte Carlo eventgenerators.• EVGEN module contains a library class forMUON physics with the main parameterizationsof (di)muon production from quarkonia decays, from open heavy avour semi leptonic and fromlight hadron weak decays.• AliGenMUONCocktail is focused on muonproduction in heavy ion collisions at LHCenergies.

HLT• The High Level Trigger (HLT) is an onlineprocessing stage whose primary function is toselect interesting events from unwantedbackground events.• The HLT applies pattern recognition to theonline raw data in the form of fast online eventreconstruction and makes a trigger decisionbased on the reconstructed information.• The ALICE muon spectrometer's HLTimplementation (dHLT) is found underHLT/MUON and is compiled to the librarylibAliHLTMUON.so.

EVE• The Event Visualization Environment(EVE) is a general framework for thevisualisation of the detector geometry andof the event-related data:• digits, reconstructed points, tracks and hitsfrom the simulations.• It supports the 3D visualization in severalmodes, including the rendering of objectswith OpenGL

PWG3• The PWG3 module contains the analysis codeprepared for the study of the topics addressedby the PhysicsWorking Group 3 of ALICE, i.e.the study of quarkonia and open heavy flavours.• Since several PWG3 physics analyses are• based on measurements performed with theforward muon spectrometer.• the related code has been developed in twosubmodules of PWG3: PWG3/muon andPWG3/muondep
