Illustration by Nathaniel MesnerGuitar Mikey & The Real Thing Outof the Box EarwigIt’s been a while since we’ve heard thename of this Hamilton native. He released aCD here and played with King Biscuit Boybut decided to pursue his career in the USA.After stints in Chicago & Boston, he nowresides in Clarksdale MS. Mike McMillanhas made some very useful contacts in thattime. One of them was Michael Frank ofEarwig Music, who’s now signed his secondCanadian bluesman (BC’s Les Copeland isthe other). Over the last couple of years, he’sbeen recording this new album in Clarksdaleand calling on some other new friends: BobMargolin & harp ace Billy Gibson as well asfellow Hamiltonian Donna Panchezak. Histime here showed a heavily electric GuitarMikey, but this disc of originals is a wellconceivedblend of acoustic and electric. The opener, “Back To You”, is an excellentexample, with mandolin, banjo and acousticslide and even some crickets. The full bandwith the Hammerhead Horns takes it to theclimax. Mikey has, for all his travelling, keptin touch with his Hamilton band members:Peter Nunn is on keys here along withlong time member keyboard player MarkYacovone. “That’s No Way” is probablycloser to what we’ll see live next monthwith powerful electric guitar and prominentorgan. “Blues Attack” features Memphisharp man Billy Gibson to good effect alongwith a duet vocal from old friend fromChicago, Nellie “Tiger” Travis. Mikey’sbio talks about many occasions on stage withTravis at the Kingston Mines and she helpsout on several other songs here. Mikey’sslide solo is a treat. A recently divorced manhas even more woman trouble, a keeper forsure. “It’s Goin’ Down” re-purposes RobertJohnson for acoustic change of pace, withMikey on exquisite slide. “The Bigger Fool”takes us to Chicago & Muddy Waters. BobMargolin is on slide, David Maxwell onpiano and Gibson on harp. Mikey’s lyricsare a treat. “When Leo Starts To Growlin’”is a lengthy big band funk workout on thetheme of don’t make me lose my temper –another highlight in an album full of them. The closer provides the title as well beingthe most ambitious composition here. Fora blues album, a French chanson theme, complete with accordion, a string sectionas well as the horns really does take it outof the box. I suspect its live electric bandversion may sound a little different. Thehomecoming CD release is at HamiltonPlace on April 7 and TBS members get adiscount, just call the office.Bill King Gloryland 7 ArtsWith his Five Aces band CD riding highon the roots music charts, Bill King releasesthis new solo piano disc. His family traces itsroots to the Depression era and the tobaccocountry around Hazel, Kentucky. Childhoodtrips throughout the Appalachians to visitfamily exposed the youngster to every kindof music we associate with the AmericanSouth. Gloryland is a sequence of twelvetone poems forming a ‘sensory recollection’of those times. A sampling of the song titlesshould give you the gist of it: “HarlemCounty Shakedown”, “The Gambler &The Riverboat Queen”, “One Blue SheetHanging in the Wind”, “Swamp GatorCrawl”, “The Talking Tree”. There is alsoa solo piano version of the marvelous“Sweet Sugar Cane” from the Rocket88 CD of that name. The wide variety ofmusical styles under the umbrella of ‘TheSouth’ is incorporated in these tone poems, compositions of considerable imaginationand execution. King is making this albumavailable first as a download and you can dothat and perhaps choose some of his othersdiscs at www.7artsmusic.com.Conor Gains Band The JunctionSessions SelfThis young guitar slinger from Cambridgehas been impressing lots of people acrossSouthern Ontario and Montreal andrepresented the Grand River Blues Societyat the International Blues Challenge inMemphis last month. He’s just eighteenand on the strength of this disc has a verypromising future indeed. He rather remindsme of Garrett Mason in his approach butis a very different songwriter. He frontsa power trio, with Vic Freitas on bass& Jeremy Patey on drums, but for thisrecording adds rhythm guitar and adds someguests: Matt Weidinger plays keyboardsand Nilton Santos adds tenor sax on onesong. I don’t often mention the producers, but Howard Ayee and Cory Blackburnhave done a superb job. Many of Gains’songs, like the opener, “Lazy Boy”, don’tstray too far from the blues tradition, bothin terms of structure and subject matter, but the lyrics are always interesting. Acouple of his songs stand out even more:“Let The Woman”, about a relationship ina small town, features unison vocals, withBlackburn & Shakura S’Aida backingGains. In place of the expected guitar solo,we get a captivating, wordless one fromShakura, a nice touch, that. “Sauble Blues”is a lovely acoustic ballad that’s far too short.“Give Me The Upper Hand” is a solid slowblues featuring Weidinger’s organ. Shakurareturns for a duet vocal on “Changing MyWorld”, a tune about an independent woman.“Breathe” has a very good melody and anice, loping beat, my choice for a single. We do get a full-length acoustic ballad inthe closer “When The Day Is Through”.Get on board early for this young man. TheConor Gains Band is officially launchingThe Junction Sessions here at the MonarchsPub in the Delta Chelsea Hotel on March8 th . You can get your copy there. You cankeep track of his appearances at www.conorgains.com.8 MapleBlues March 2012 www.torontobluessociety.com

David Essig Rolling Fork To GallowsPoint WatershedA visit to this veteran musician’s web siteshows an impressive list of albums recordedover a fruitful career. But one of them hasnot been available since the onset of CDs.Whose Muddy Shoes was a straight aheadblues LP recorded in Dunnville, Ontario in1986 and released on the Italian Appaloosalabel. It was not widely available here.Requests for it had been piling up and Essigdecided to re-record it rather than simplymaking it available once again. A visit toBC by Chris Whiteley was the immediatetrigger, Chris bringing his harmonica andguitars for the session. Essig’s regularrhythm section of Tobin Frank on acousticbass and Alan Cameron on drums roundout the personnel. They begin with “Waitin’On You”, a traditional a capella gospelsong and proceed to a roaring version ofRobert Johnson’s “If I Had Possession”,with Essig on electric slide and Chris onharmonica. The solos take it to double theoriginals length and then it’s faded. I wonderhow long it actually ran. “Candyman” is asolo performance from Essig, while SkipJames’ “Cypress Grove” gets an electricarrangement Chris on lap steel. “CaseyJones” has always been a favourite and thisexcellent version, with multiple acousticslide parts is a delight. RJ’s “When YouGot A Good Friend” gets the band onagain and it’s followed by an enthusiastic“Give Me Back My Wig”, the Hound DogTaylor hit with just slide guitars. ElmoreJames’ “Whose Muddy Shoes” gets theband treatment, with Chris’ amplified harpaccompanying Essig’s slashing slide. TheStanley Brothers’ “Poison Lies” gets alovely acoustic arrangement and is not atall out of place in this program. RJ’s “ComeOn In My Kitchen” brings the band back.“Jackie’s Blues” is the only original here, alovely solo piece for piano & guitar. FredMcDowell’s “Keep Your Lamp Trimmed& Burnin’” features Chris on lap steel. Ahidden slide piece concludes the disc. I’veascribed the name of the most prominentperformer to these songs but this is a bit of adisservice to David Essig as he has come upwith his own arrangements. His vocals suitthese arrangements perfectly making for aneminently listenable blues disc. Incidentally,Rolling Fork is Muddy’s birthplace andGallows Point the view from his window onProtection Island. Information on obtainingthis disc is at www.davidessig.com.Mike DeWay Turbulence BluesenvilleWith blues so popular around the world,it has often puzzled me why musicians fromnon-American backgrounds force themselvesto sing as though they were Americans andoften like African-Americans, ignoring theirown culture completely. English-Canadiansadmittedly don’t have far to go but thisphenomenon has largely been true of French-Canadians as well. Mike DeWay didn’t seethe point of doing that either: Turbulence isall in French, a few instrumentals aside, buta solid blues album nonetheless. He and hisband know how to play: the opening “C’estoù qu’t’es t’alleé” has a lovely groove, thetwo saxes, keyboards, guitar, bass & drumslineup meshing nicely. “Otis Blues”, one ofthe instrumentals, finds DeWay channelingOtis Rush, his playing showing a top-rankguitarist. I found myself wondering howmany other treasures the Quebec scene ishiding. It’s an enjoyable disc throughout andprobably even better if your French is good. His web site is www.mikedeway.com.Heritage Blues Orchestra And Still IRise Raisin’ Music/RED/SonyThe French label Raisin’ Music has putout two double CDs celebrating the historyof Chicago Blues. This third one showcasesa new band with some new ideas aboutpresenting country blues & gospel for the21 st century and for that all involved are tobe commended. Bluesman/actor Bill Sims(Lackawanna Blues, Cadillac Records) isnot as well known as he should be but he’swww.torontobluessociety.comthe veteran here. His daughter Chaney isalso on vocals and Junior Mack is the mainguitarist & is also on vocals. Seemingly nota member of the front line, tenor sax manBruno Wilhelm is a key element of this discand his horn arrangements will make you situp and take notice. Kenny “Beady Eyes”Smith on drums and French harmonicaace Vincent Bucher are members of theorchestra as well. As with the previousreleases, Larry Skoller is the producer. SonHouse’s “Clarksdale Moan” opens the CDand provides the template. Sims opens onhis National Steel, but Kenny’s prominentdrums kick in right afterwards with Bucher’sharp & Mack’s guitar, so far, so normal. Inthe second verse, though, the horns slide in -Wilhelm’s background is in avant garde jazzand the lineup of tenor sax, two trumpetsand trombone in this arrangement takesthe song to another place entirely while thefront line keeps chugging along. I think itworks wonderfully but many traditionalistsmay not agree. “C-Line Woman” openswith tuba over tom-toms, Chaney sings acapella with Sims & Mack sing the chorusin what sounds like a pre-blues Africanchant that Chaney has arranged. The hornssit out here but return with a vengeanceon a big band version of “Catfish Blues”“Go Down Hannah’ starts as a field hollerbut as the horns enter the fields get leftbehind. “Get Right Church” is as close totraditional as they get, perhaps to give usa respite. The disc closes with their mostambitious piece, a three movement “HardTimes” beginning with Chaney leading a calland response verse followed by the hornsquoting Miles Davis’ “In A Silent Way”before switching into a funk jam. If you’vebeen wondering how blues might continueto be relevant, you should try this disc. Ithink you’ll agree that blues belongs in thisheady mix of styles.
