Chemical Defense EquipmentabFig. 17-37. (a) The modular general purpose tent system chemical-biological protective liner can be placed in operationin approximately 60 minutes and prepared for movement in approximately 30 minutes. (b) The liner is equipped with anintegrated airlock that functions as an air purge, allowing decontaminated personnel or casualties requiring treatment, rest, rehydration, or command control to enter the system.Drawing (a): Courtesy of the Chemical Casualty Care Division, US Army Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense,Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md. Its positive-pressureenvironment provides filtered air for protection againstchemical and biological warfare agents and radioactiveparticles. The liner system occupies half of thetent system; depending on mission requirements, thesystem is capable of accommodating two liners pertent to provide additional space as needed. Each linersystem is equipped with pressure gauges, a high/lowpressure alarm, a motor blower, a filtration unit, andan integrated air lock. Tactical applications for thisequipment may include rest and relief, command andcontrol, and medical treatment. 40,44ADDITIONAL PATIENT PROTECTION AND TRANSPORT EQUIPMENTPatient Protective WrapPatient protective wrap is designed to protect apatient during evacuation after the chemical protectiveovergarment has been removed and the patienthas received medical treatment. A patient can remainin the wrap for up to 3 hours. Whenever a patient isevacuated in the wrap, the M48 motor blower mustbe attached to provide fresh air to the patient andreduce carbon dioxide build-up (Figure 17-38). Patientprotective wrap is for one patient only, weighsapproximately 5.5 lb, and comes in woodland anddesert camouflage patterns. It incorporates layeredfabric with a charcoal lining. The top layer is made ofa material similar to that used in the battle dress overgarment, and the bottom layer is made of chemicallyresistant plastic material. The wrap has a continuouszipper along the outer edge for ease of patient insertion;a large, transparent window in the top to viewthe patient (or for the patient to see out); and a pocketfor medical records. 40Individual Chemical Patient Resuscitation DeviceDeveloped according to US military specifications, the individual chemical resuscitation device is a ventilatorysystem consisting of a compressible butyl rubberbag, a NATO standard C2A1 canister filter, a nonrebreathingvalve, a cricothyroid cannula adapter, anda flexible hose connected to an oropharyngeal mask(Figure 17-39). The mask is removable from the distalend of the flexible hose for connection of the hose tothe cannula adapter. The butyl rubber bag resists thepenetration of liquid chemical agent that may be on the587
