""We""390 THE CURE OP ARS.What should we expect(has been said of tht"death of St. Vincent of Paul *), what should we expect of one whose life was so like the life of our Lord, and whose mind was so much the life of a little child, but that when he came to die his death should be childlike too? And certainly, amongall the deaths of theSaints of God, we hardly see one marked with greatertranquillity and calmness, peace and sweetness; like thesleep of a little child. All his long eighty-five years, from the time that he kept his father s sheep, and amongthe herds of the field lived in the spirit of prayer, wasthe life of a child of God. He had a right to die as <Mchild, for he had lived as a child ;and they who live aschildren of God have a right from their heavenly Fatherto die in His bosom, to die as the patriarch died of old,by the mouth of the Lord; that is, as it were, bythe kisof the lips of their heavenly Father."Such, as we have seen, had been the life, and suchwas the death of the holy Cure of Ars. The words justquoted might have been written of him.begged him in vain," says M. Monnin, totake a little rest. He always answered, I shall restin Paradise. On Wednesday, the 29th July, he wentthrough his usual routine of labour, catechised, passedsixteen or seventeen hours in the confessional, andended this laborious day with prayer. When he returned home, more broken and exhausted than usual,he sank upon a chair, saying,/ can do no more? He*had repeated several times before :Ah, sinners will*kill the sinner ; and again: I know some one whowould be finely taken in if there were no Paradise !* Tht Glory of St. Vincent of Paul. Bj the Right Rev. H. E.Manning, D.D.
