""PERFECT CHARITY. 293yesterday. You deserve it for your other sins, and youought to thank God for giving you this means of expiating them.In the parish where I was vicaire there was a person who devoted herself to placing out young girls.People often came to find fault with her. She alwayshumbled herself, taking all in good part, and askingtheir pardon. And it came to be said of her, Oh ! asto her,she is a Saint. And indeed the Saints act inthis way. This is true devotion. It is like St. John ofGod, who passed himself off for a madman. When theSuperior of the house in which he was had received aletter inquiring if he had a Saint with him who passedfor a madman, he went and asked his pardon;but St.John felt only one regret, that he had been discovered, and should no longer have to endure the humiliations, blows, and painful remedies brought upon him by hissupposed malady, which he had endured with imperturbable patience and obedience. The good missionary, having no means of ransoming the prisoner, was much embarrassed. After a moment s reflection, he said to thepoor mother, I will take the place of your son. Sellme, and redeem him! She refused at first, but overcome by the urgency of the missionary she yielded. Theson was restored to his mother, and the missionaryremained a slave to the Turks, who loaded him withevery kind of ill-treatment. This was perfect charity. He preferred his neighbour to himself. But we, on thecontrary, are grieved at the prosperity of others. If one of your friends is praised, and nothing iesaid of you, you are discontented. If you see some one,
