"""God"A266 THE CUBrf OF ARS.nothing created can nourish the soul which is a spirit,God was pleased to give Himself to be its food. But our miseryis that we neglect to have recourseto this Divine nourishment as we pass through the desertof this life.Like one who dies of hunger at a well-spreadtable, there are those who go on for fifty or sixty yearswithout nourishment for their souls !"Oh, if Christians could but understand the languagein which our Lord speaks to them :Notwithstanding allthy misery, I desire to see near Me that beautiful soulwhich I created for Myself. I have made it so great, thatnothing but Myself can fill it ;I have made it so pure, thatMy Body alone is meet to be its food. Our Lord has always singled out pure souls. St. John, the beloved disciple, rested upon His bosom. St. Catherine was remarkable for her purity; and so was she favoured with frequent visions of Paradise. When she died, the angels took her body and bore it to Mount Sinai, whereMoses received the Commandments of the Law. Godshowed by this miracle that so pleasing in his sight is apure soul, that it merits that the body which has beena partaker of its purity should be buried by the hands ofangels.looks lovingly upon a pure soul He; grants allits petitions. How should He refuse any thingwhich lives but for Him, by Him, and in Him ?to a soulIt seeksHim, and God shows Himself to it; it calls Him, andGod comes ; it is one with Him ;it enchains His will toits own. A pure soul has an irresistible power over theloving heart of our Lord.pure soul is with God, as a child with its mother. It caresses and embraces her, and its mother returns allits endearments."
