FOLKWAYS60005 LOUIS ARMSTRONG SATCHMO AT THE NATIONAL PRESS CLUB - RED BEANS & RICE-LY YOURS(With Tyree Glenn) [1971] Jazz icon Louis Armstrong, always the consummate entertainer, turned a 1971award ceremony at the National Press Club into an impromptu performance that was one of his last concertsbefore passing away 5 months later. Joined by longtime band-mates Tyree Glenn and Tommy Gwaltney, Armstrongshows no signs of frailty on classics including ‘Mack the Knife.’ The recording, originally a limited vinylrelease by the National Press Club now available widely for the first time in both physical and digital formats, also includes highlights from Glenn’s tribute concert to his late friend and teacher one year later. Armstrongoften signed letters ‘Red Beans and Rice-ly Yours,’ which makes for an apt title since his favorite recipes areincluded in the liner notes. 11 tracks, 58 minutes. This release contains the three albums she recorded for the Kapp labelwhich revealed her full maturity as a singer: ‘Book of Ballads,’ and the soulful ‘When You’re Away’ - two brilliantsets, each an impeccable testimony to her pre-eminence in modern song - and ‘Something to Swing About,’a finger-snapping selection of up tempo swinging arrangements by Ernie Wilkins, featuring a group of outstandingjazz soloists, with McRae, in fine form, showing why she was considered to be one of the few original stylistsof her time. Her voice was not the penetrating instrument of other leading vocalists, but shewas a warm and swinging singer. As these sides make abundantly clear, she found her own freedom, away fromthe constraints of the band setting, in singing backed by small groups like Pell’s octet or Marty Paich’s sextet andquartet. An independent soul, she was a lovely and talented singer. ARRANGEMENTS BY MARION EVANS - BIG BAND SWING (CollectivePersonnel: Bernie Glow, Burt Collins, Doc Severinsen, John Bello, Urbie Green, Frank Rehak, Dick Meldonian,Gene Quill, Al Cohn, Zoot Sims, Nat Pierce, Barry Galbraith, Milt Hinton, Osie Johnson, Herb Geller, More)[1959] Despite having an A-list personnel of people like Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, Frank Rehak, Urbie Green, GeneQuill, Bernie Glow and a Nat Pierce-Milt Hinton-Osie Johnson rhythm section with Barry Galbraith on guitar, this is probably the rarest of all big band albums from the 1950s. Moreover, Ted McNabb, whose name it bears, isn’t even on it. He was just the guy who put up the money. He paid for the charts by arranger Marion Evans, the musicians and the studio time - all the upfront costs that enabled Columbia to agree to release it on theirEpic label. For him it was a dream realised; a big band in the Swing Era style, clean, precise and stomping, likethe old Basie and Goodman bands, playing some standards that hadn’t been overdone at the time. The arrangementsare well-crafted, not uncomplicated, but not overly complex either and, in the hands of this band, theyswing mightily in the call-and-response manner of the Swing Era. The King Sisters were one of the mostrespected vocal groups of the 20th Century - in the recording studio, on the concert stage and as televisionfixtures of the 1960s. Their sophisticated four part harmony was emulated by many other lesser known groupsand ‘Imagination’ is a dynamic collection of tracks recorded at their vocal peak during the 1950s, in brilliantfidelity. All of their single releases are debuting on CD among the classics: ‘Imagination’, ‘Deep Purple’, ‘Takethe ‘A’ Train’, ‘That Old Feeling’. ‘I’ll Get By’, ‘Early Autumn’ and ‘Street of Dreams’.[Item Code: 73014 2-CD: $16.00]700 FANNY BRICE THE ROSE OF WASHINGTON SQUARE Fanny Brice is considered one of the first‘torch’ singers, with her signature rendition of the standard ‘My Man’, which she premiered in the Ziegfeld Folliesof 1921 and went on to eventually receive the posthumous Hall of Fame Award.
