WHEN SCHILLER MEETS SOCCERMariza PereiraIn my paper, I explore the idea of “soccer as art form” from three major definitionalperspectives: moral art, refined/unique art, and popular art.Three foundational academic and personal interests led to this paper: commitment tosocial justice, a culture of “football fever” in my native Portugal, and the discipline ofsemiotics, which is the study of symbols and the meanings with which we charge them.If we can conscientiously imbue human experience with positive or negative meaning, Iargue that “soccer as art” becomes a potentially inexhaustible source of positive meaningfor human beings in terms of creativity and permeating social barriers. When soccer is truly aesthetic, it is also exemplary in morality, capable even ofpioneering social justice. My goal is to show that at its best, soccer embodies Schiller’sideal Aesthetic State. 11 Lamarque, Peter & Sartwell, Crispin (1997). Aesthetics The Classic Readings.
