SECTIONSIXResults <strong>of</strong> Field InvestigationsBridge #: G-02000Bridge Name: Swallow Falls Road Bridge over the Youghiogheny River (MIHP# G-IV-A-290)County: GarrettDate <strong>of</strong> Construction: 1960Bridge Type: Steel Girder / Floorbeam SystemNRHP Eligibility/ Criterion: Criterion A and Criterion CSummary Description:Bridge No. G-02000, also known as the Swallow Falls Road Bridge, was <strong>built</strong> in 1960 andcarries Swallow Falls Road across the Youghiogheny River in a rural area <strong>of</strong> Garrett County.This is a two-span steel beam bridge with an open steel grate deck. The substructure has twoprecast crib wall abutments with concrete bases and a pier consisting <strong>of</strong> a concrete cap andfooting with five RCCP columns. The overall length <strong>of</strong> the bridge is 101'-4" with a clearroadway <strong>of</strong> 19'-11". Each span is composed <strong>of</strong> five W30x108 steel beams that support W8x13floor beams with the steel deck on top. The main beams, which bear on steel plates, have W14diaphragms spanning <strong>between</strong> them. The four-foot cantilever on each side is diagonally bracedfrom the main beam at about a 45-degree angle. The bridge has its original two-strand steelrailing and posts, which rises about 5'-5" from the bottom <strong>of</strong> the floor beams. The wingwalls areprecast concrete cribbing with a concrete base, similar to the abutments. A small sandstonerubble masonry pier is located to the north <strong>of</strong> the bridge on the east side <strong>of</strong> the river. It appears tobe a remnant <strong>of</strong> an earlier, probably nineteenth century bridge that once stood at this site.Statement <strong>of</strong> Significance:The Swallow Falls Road Bridge (MIHP # G-IV-A-290, Bridge G-02000) was <strong>built</strong> in 1960 nearthe site <strong>of</strong> an earlier nineteenth-century bridge across the Youghiogheny River, near the SwallowFalls community, in western Garrett County. In the 1930s, the development <strong>of</strong> nearby SwallowFalls and Herrington Manor State Parks breathed new economic life into the surrounding areaand increased automobile traffic through the small Swallow Falls community.
