The bridge runs northwest-southeast just west <strong>of</strong> the<strong>highway</strong>'s intersection with Linganore Road, just east <strong>of</strong> the city <strong>of</strong> Frederick. The structure is athree-span Warren truss with arched lower chords and a top-mounted steel deck. The center spanis about 208 feet long, and the east and west spans are about 156 feet long. The end trusseswiden towards the center <strong>of</strong> the bridge. The outer end <strong>of</strong> each <strong>of</strong> the side span trusses sits on aconcrete abutment, while the inner edges are supported on two sets <strong>of</strong> twin reinforced concretecolumns on spread footings with steel noses. Each truss support consists <strong>of</strong> a concrete base, withtwo columns rising out <strong>of</strong> the base. The columns are joined at the middle by a concrete beam,and support a concrete slab. The bridge truss sits on this slab on steel rockers. The center spanwidens at its outer edges and narrows at the center. This truss supports steel stringers framedinto steel floor beams connected to the truss panel points. The sides <strong>of</strong> the road deck are linedwith a 14-inch wide concrete parapet and standard metal railing that were replaced in a 1987reconstruction <strong>of</strong> the bridge. The bridge carries a standard 24 foot wide concrete road bed withtwo traffic lanes and one emergency lane.Statement <strong>of</strong> Significance:The MD 144 Bridge over the Monocacy River (MIHP # F-3-205, Bridge 1003803) in FrederickCounty was constructed in 1955 as part <strong>of</strong> improvements undertaken by the State RoadsCommission to upgrade roads and <strong>bridges</strong> throughout the state. The bridge was <strong>built</strong> in 1955according to standardized plans <strong>of</strong> the State Roads Commission dated May, 1954 and was\15-SEP-11\\ 7-21
