SECTIONFIVEConsulting Engineers and ContractorsCHANEY ENTERPRISESFrom the early 1950s to 1962, this company held the road maintenance contract for PrinceGeorge‘s County. In 1962, ―Babe‖ Chaney, his son Richard, Jack Havenner, and Jack Misterexpanded their business ventures to include concrete services. Construction business was phasedout and the Charles County Concrete and Charles County Sand & Gravel companies were begun.The Charles County Block Company was created in 1964; later that same year, the AnnapolisConcrete and Annapolis Sand & Gravel operation became part <strong>of</strong> the business group. ChaneyEnterprises is now comprised <strong>of</strong> the following companies; Charles County Block, CharlesCounty Concrete, Charles County Sand & Gravel, Annapolis Concrete, Annapolis Sand &Gravel and Leonardtown Sand & Gravel.CHARLES PERRING COMPANYThis Baltimore, Maryland based company constructed the movable span bridge that crossed theChoptank River at Cambridge, Maryland (Spero and Berger & Associates 1995: B-2). Thisbridge was known as the Emerson C. Harrington Bridge and was constructed in 1935 beforebeing abandoned in 1987 (Dukes 2004).Charles Perring was a notable engineer who worked for a number <strong>of</strong> engineering companies.Perring also served as Chief Engineer for the City <strong>of</strong> Baltimore from 1920 to 1928 (Spero andBerger & Associates 1995: B-2).CONTEE SAND AND GRAVELEstablished in 1928, Contee Sand and Gravel Company, Inc., operated a quarry in PrinceGeorge‘s County, Maryland. The company ran mining and processing operations on a 293-acrearea near Laurel, Maryland until July <strong>of</strong> 1982. This company is now known as the KonterraCorporation.FAIRCHILD ENGINEERING AND AIRPLANE CORPORATIONHarry Kahn, an employee <strong>of</strong> the Fairchild Engineering and Airplane Corporation, designedBridge # 13046. (Spero and Berger & Associates 1995: B-3). This aluminum girder bridge wasconstructed over the Patapsco River‘s South Branch near Sykesville in 1963. This bridge wasconstructed by the State Roads Commission and International Aluminum Structures Inc. Thebridge is the only bridge <strong>of</strong> its type in Maryland and one <strong>of</strong> only seven in North America. Thisbridge is a three-span structure made <strong>of</strong> riveted and triangular box stiffened sheet girders. Bridgemembers support a light concrete slab sheathed with a bituminous deck that serves as the ridingsurface (Spero and Berger & Associates 1995: 109-112).GEORGE & LYNCH, INC.George & Lynch, Inc. is a 78-year-old construction company based in New Castle, Delaware.The company‘s services include concrete construction, site work, road building, marine work,water and wastewater plants, buildings, landfill construction and operation, and directionalboring.\15-SEP-11\\ 6-2
