ANNUAL REPORT 2006-2007Principal’s LetterDear Alumni and Friends of Serra:School year 2006-2007 was one for the ages, as evidenced by the following:• The amount of students applying to each freshmen class continues to riseat record levels! For the fourth year in a row, Serra High School is at fullenrollment with 1,000 students.• Our theatre arts program performed to full houses in “The Miracle Worker”and “Bye Bye Birdie.”• Our Men’s Chorus earned their second consecutive “Unanimous SuperiorRating” at the CMEA Chorus Festival. Our Tri-school Symphonic Band earneda “Superior” rating at the CMEA Band Festival• Our seniors earned $3 million in scholarships, being accepted to all of the UC and CSU campuses, the major CatholicUniversities nationwide, the Ivy League, and the United States Naval Academy.• More Serra students are taking Advanced Placement courses than ever before, with scores at the highest levels in theschool’s history -- well above the national average.• Varsity league championships in football, wrestling, golf and baseball.As we begin 2007-2008, we are very excited about the new ventures:• We welcome to Serra our new Campus Minister, Kyle Lierk. Kyle comes to us by way of Creighton University inOmaha and the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley. He and his staff are already making their mark enhancingprograms that support our students’ spiritual development.• The arrival of an outstanding cohort of new teachers in Social Studies, English, Spanish, Art, and Science -- moreabout them in the next edition of Traditions.• We have a brand new all-weather football/soccer field that will properly drain water during winter storms!• The Board of Regents are hard at work on a number of strategic initiatives, one of which is an information night onaffordable housing in the Bay Area for K-12 teachers and staff throughout the Archdiocese of San Francisco.Finally, I want to thank each of you -- especially those listed in the 2006-2007 Annual Report for your generous supportof Serra. Last year we raised $1.8 million in annual fundraising, launched a strategic campaign to enhance our endowmentthrough planned gifts, and began finalizing our designs for Phase II of our Master Plan. I especially want to thank ouralumni for their ever-increasing support of our financial aid program — you men are true Padres!On behalf of our students, thank you for your support. With your help, Serra has become the “destination school” on theSan Francisco Peninsula. The differential varies with emerging educational programs and facility improvements thatenhance both student instruction and the physical plant. The revenue generated by our Parent PledgeProgram helps close this gap and allows the administration to address planned and unexpected needsthroughout the year. The Parent Pledge Program flows directly into areas of school life experiencedby students. Most recently this money has been directed to the Building Fund and the need for newand better facilities.The parents listed below and on the following three pages have generously contributed to the ParentPledge Program during this fiscal year (July 1, 2006 thru June 30, 2007). Building for our Future - Phase IIThe final planning stages for Phase II of our Capital Campaign are underway. New construction will include a state-of-the-artmusic building, an art building with space for an expanded Academic Resource Center and additional classrooms, and a new andlarger swimming complex to accommodate all of our aquatic needs.MusicAcademicThe Academic Resource Center, whichbegan in 1999, started with 22 studentsand was housed in the area that wasonce the library’s workspace. Theprogram, now with 110 students, helpsthose with learning differences to reachtheir full academic potential throughassistance, appropriate accomodationsand tutoring.A new, enlarged band room that will exceed the minimumsquare footage recommended by the Music EducatorsNational Conference• New practice rooms• State-of-the-art acoustics• Dressing areas for our performing arts• New storage areas for the music library, uniformsand equipment• A workroom for instrument repairArtWe propose an enlarged classroom areathat will provide more space for teacherledstudy groups, technology, studentprivacy and a conference area.AquaticWhen the Serra swimming program began in the early 1960’s, it first usedthe swimming pool at the Elks Lodge down the street on 20th Avenue.As the progam became more successful, the need for our own pool wasapparent. In the mid-1960’s, a group of parents spearheaded a drive tobuild the pool. When the pool was completed in the summer of 1966, itwas state-of-the-art and the envy of other schools. Now the pool is oneof the oldest in the county and no longer meets the needs of our growingaquatic program.We propose . . .• A new 35 meters by 25 yards pool, standard dimensions for highschool water polo• New bleachers for spectators• New decking• Updated filtration systems and equipment• Landscaping to enhance the beauty of the campus27• An enlarged and improved room dedicated to painting,drawing, 3-D art• Exposure to natural lighting• State-of-the-art projection for the art history component• Increased space to hold artwork and tools• A ceramics room with electric wheels, glazes and kilns• Facilities for a broadcast studio

The friendships I made while atSerra continue. In fact, my class (theclass of 1964) meets every first Fridayin December to renew those friendshipsand to rekindle the memories we allshare. Our class had such great schoolspirit that, although we didn’t winany championships in 1964, we wereawarded the C.A.L. “Spirit Trophy” thatyear. My late brotherTommy ‘69 was a part of the legendary Freitas-Swann football era of the late 60’s. It wasthen that I was able to experience first hand that incredible Serra spirit, the student cheeringsections, and the Padre Whisper . . . I was hooked!!Through the years, I’ve come to treasure the many friendships that I’ve established throughSerra. My wife, Karen, and I believe in the values that Serra has come to represent. -- thewonderful sense of community and the goal that each student develop not only academically,but spiritually and socially as well, as they build a foundation for their future stages in life.I will contine to support Serra so that I can ensure that other students can gain the opportunitiesand share the many experiences that I, my brothers Joe ‘66 and Tommy ‘69, my nephewJohn Eric ‘88 and my son Chris ‘06 were all able to be a part of.’’

ANNUAL REPORT 2006-2007Robert Yonts ‘5946‘‘Little did I know in the Fall of 1956, that by the time I graduated from Serra in 1959, I wouldbe given an intellectual, moral, social and athletic blueprint that would help guide me throughthe challenges, losses and wins of the years to come.Serra taught me to take the next step when confronting a difficult situation and to avoid the easyway out. The instructors at Serra taught me to innately do the right thing in resolving difficultmoral and intellectual choices. Most importantly, I learned to analyze my mistakes and learn justas much from them as my successes.I remain very close friends with many of my classmates despite the vastly different journeys eachof us have taken since we started at Serra over fifty years ago. Being a Padre is a membership in afraternity that endures the rest of your life. The values and morals that I learned there have served me well over the manyyears since I graduated. My experiences at Serra gave me the tools and self confidence toface life’s many challenges. It is a pleasure to give back, even in small measure, to the schoolthat did so much for me.Serra has not only had a profound effect on my life, but also on the lives of a number offamily members. My son, Terry, Jr. ‘85; my son-in-law, Tony Malone ‘80; his father, BillMalone ‘55, and my brother-in-law, Dan Greenwood ‘56, are all proud beneficiaries of aSerra High School education. God willing, my grandson, Will Malone, will be a member ofthe graduating class of 2019.Each year 30 to 50 members of the class of 1964 gather informally at a December luncheonto renew friendships and catch up with each others’ lives. I always look forward to seeingwho is going to show up from year to year. The mere fact that this gathering continues is atestament to the comradeship that was formed during our high school years. Typically, such gifts aredeductible items for federal and Californiastate income tax purposes, subject tocertain limitations. There can be additionaltax advantages in donating appreciatedproperty, securities and other assets.By naming Junípero Serra HighSchool the beneficiary of your lifeinsurance policy, you may receivea tax deduction. Life insurancecontributions can be an attractiveoption when the donor’s family isgrown and life insurance may be ofless importance.A family endowment may be established toendow a scholarship for a Serra student.A minimum target donation of $25,000 isneeded to establish an endowment.A memorial endowment may be establishedto honor a loved one. All those listed in ourmemorial book are remembered in a monthlymass.50Real estate gifts are among the mostvaluable contributions you can make toensure the future of Serra. Real estatecan be given outright or can be deeded tothe school, while you continue to occupythe property. A bequestmay be for a specific amount, a percentageof the donor’s estate, or a residual portion.Bequests can help offset estate taxes andmay allow a donor to make a significant giftthat might not have been possible during hisor her lifetime.Are youover70 ½?Read below abouta new law that canhelp YOU help US!Do youhave anIRA?It’s been said that with age comes wisdom. Now you can use that wisdom to make a charitable gift to Serra High Schooland satisfy the minimum distribution requirements on your Individual Retirement Account (“IRA”).Up until December 31, 2007, if a donor is over age 70 ½, he can transfer up to $100,000 directly from his IRA to a charitysuch as Junípero Serra High School -- without first having to include the IRA withdrawal on his income taxes. In the past,any donor who wanted to withdraw money from an IRA to make a charitable contribution would have to include the IRAwithdrawal on his income tax return. A donor would then be entitled to a charitable deduction for the gift to the charity.However, in some circumstances, the charitable deduction did not entirely offset the amount of the IRA withdrawal thatwas required to be included on the donor’s income tax return, thereby causing the donor to pay income taxes. The newlaw solves this problem.As long as the IRA withdrawal is sent directly from the custodian of the IRA to the charity (not from the donor to thecharity), the gift satisfies the donor’s minimum distribution requirement and is not required to be included on the donor’sincome tax return . . . AND benefits the donor’s favorite charity. What this law amounts to is a tax-free IRA withdrawalwhich can benefit Serra.“We are really excited about this new law. It can really help some of our benefactors help Serra by making a very taxeffectivegift,” said Director of Development and Alumni Relations Russ Bertetta ‘67.
