Terms/Vocabulary• Thumbnail sketches: small, quick sketches used by an artist togenerate multiple ideas for a project.• Armature: skeleton or framework of a 3-D artwork.• Vessel: Container• Symmetrical/asymmetrical balance: symmetrical balance=identicalon both sides i.e. mirror image. Asymmetrical balance = balanced onboth sides but not identically.• Utilitarian art: art which is functional –can be used. Ex. costume,pottery, silverware• Additive process: Adding material together to create a form.• <strong>Papier</strong>-mâché: is a construction material that consists of pieces ofpaper, stuck together using a wet paste (e.g. glue, wheat paste,starch,or wallpaper adhesive). The crafted object becomes solid when thepaste dries.


Examples


Hopi Vessels• Pottery, clothing, and making baskets are justa portion of the great arts and crafts of theSouthwest Native Americans. Their art usedsymbols and signs to represent their ideas,beliefs, dreams, and visions. Pottery wasmade for everyday use, including cooking,storage, bathing, and religiousceremonies. They were painted and carvedwith designs that told a story.

Basic Parts of a vessel


Getting Started….1. Look at all three cultural <strong>vessels</strong>. (research outsideof class as well)2. Choose a form and design from one or two ofthese. Ex. Greek form with Hopi design3. Create 6, small, thumbnail sketches showingdifferent forms that can be created using givenmaterials.4. Select your favorite form.5. Begin assembling materials to create the armatureof your vessel. Use masking tape to hold the partstogether.


Today’s Objective (Day 2)• Finish creating your 6 thumbnail sketches.• Select your favorite. The one you feel is unique.• Begin constructing your armature (frame) using 3pieces of styrofoam (and tag board to create afluted opening if desired.)• Use SMALL amounts of masking tape to hold yourparts together.


Objective (Day 3)• Complete the construction of your vessel. All partsshould become one.• When finished with the newspaper layers, cover theentire form with brown, paper towels. (one layershould be enough. When dry, if newsprint showsthrough, you can add a second layer)• 50pts. on construction of form Thursday


Objective Day 4• Complete all brown paper layer• Use string to create circularbands around your vessel ifdesired.• Begin drawing designs andpatterns on your vessel withpencil.


Agenda for today:• Get all of your base coat colors laid downtoday. Make your bands as straight andneat as possible.• Transfer imagery to base coat areas ifapplicable.• Keep up with your project progresssheets (steps and procedures)


Final Day• Cover your vessel with clear coatspray• Photograph• Fill out a self-assessment sheet• Complete your project progress sheet• Display on top of art lockers
