The oldest are from 1944, the latest quiterecent, and the artist has utilized a multitude oftechniques and methods in creating them. It wasa watershed in Erró’s art when his collages firststarted to appear. At that time he completelyabandoned the graphic creation and hiscollages became sketches on which he basedhis paintings, graphic works and aquarelles. The hand was no longer the main interpreterin his works of art; it was rather an instrumentto project images on paper, canvas and othermedia, often with the aid of slide projectors oroverhead projectors. This exhibition is organizedin a close cooperation with Erró and based onworks from both the artist’s private collection andthe collection of Reykjavik Art Museum. Curatedby Danielle Kvaran.7 January – 14 MarchErró – PostersExhibition posters have two major functions;informing the public about the content of an exhibitionand attracting visitors to the museum orgallery. The posters combine words and graphicsto provide useful information on specific artisticErró, Pólitískt málverk/PoliticalPainting, plakat/poster.Exhibitionsevents and with time they become a uniquedocumentation. Reykjavik Art Museum recentlyreceived as a gift more than 100 of Erró‘s posters, including exhibition posters, in addition tothe 137 posters that were included in Erró´s generousgift of art in 1989. This exhibition is the firstopportunity the public has to view a selection ofErró‘s posters from the artists different privateexhibitions in his career of 50 years. Curated byDanielle Kvaran.20 January – 15 AprilSantiago SierraThe Spanish artist Santiago Sierra shocks peoplewith his radical and provocative works that challengethe audience‘s sense of propriety. Sierrahas been accused of abusing the miserablesituation of less fortunate people by payingthem for participating in his works with formsof compensation that many consider extremelyproblematic. Sierra‘s intention, however, is not toshock, but to shed light on the general public‘sideas on inequality and the unfair distribution ofwealth within the society. He has remuneratedprostitutes in heroin for having a line tattooed ontheir backs while sitting in a straight side-by-side.He has hired labourers to carry heavy objectsback and forth in complete futility, and lockedup others in cardboard boxes in the suffocatingsummer heat. Sierra represented Spain at theVenice Biennale 2003, where no one except hiscountrymen were allowed to enter the exhibitionhall. Sierra studied art, first in his hometown ofMadrid and later in Hamburg, Germany. Afterfinishing his studies he moved to Mexico, wherehe lived for 14 years and his attitude towards artand society was heavily influenced during thatperiod. Sierra now lives and works in Madrid. Thisis Sierra’s first international exhibition consistingentirely of documentaries and videos, and hisimpressive performances will also add flavourto daily life in Reykjavik during the run of theexhibition.

The drawings cover a wide rangeof subjects: devotional drawings, landscapes, form studies and portraits in addition to sketchesof many of the artist’s well known sculptures. The exhibition also contains a rare self-portraitby the artist. These previously little known worksby Ásmundur Sveinsson open doors to a newchapter in Icelandic art history, and also shed anew light on the popular sculptor. Árnason’s works, whether in his sound-pieces, sculptures orperformances, blur the line between the real andunreal, fiction and fact. In his recent work, he hasworked with nature and natural history; movingaway from the mythological references seen inhis earlier work. Researching the realm of scienceand its history, questioning any one true methodof its field and rather backing up in order torediscover ‘truths’ or aesthetic qualities otherwisehidden from us.Magnús Árnason, Homage, 2011.Frá sýningunni Frá hugmynd að höggmynd –Teikningar Ásmundar Sveinssonar/From theexhibition Sketch to Sculpture – Drawings byÁsmundur Sveinsson.Hafnarhús7TALK Lecture& VisitorSeries 2012Within the TALK Lecture & Visitor Series,Reykjavik Art Museum, The Icelandic Art Centerand The Iceland Academy of the Arts areinitiating a collaborative lecture programmeintended to offer an on-going platform forencounters with art professionals on aninternational level.
