A Learning CentreAt <strong>Edgbarrow</strong>, learning and teaching are our highest priority. All students are given <strong>the</strong> opportunity <strong>to</strong>achieve <strong>the</strong>ir potential within a vibrant and purposeful environment. As a comprehensive school wehave a track record of success, with our students excelling academically.Our curriculum is carefully planned and moni<strong>to</strong>red <strong>to</strong> offer both variety and academic rigour. Themajority of our students will progress in<strong>to</strong> our Sixth Form <strong>to</strong> complete A Levels. Working inpartnership with parents and students, we are able <strong>to</strong> personalise <strong>the</strong> curriculum <strong>to</strong> offer a widerange of opportunities in order <strong>to</strong> meet <strong>the</strong> needs of individuals.There are three guiding principles for learning within <strong>the</strong> school. Every student is entitled <strong>to</strong> progressin <strong>the</strong>ir learning, be active in <strong>the</strong>ir learning and be clear on how <strong>to</strong> succeed. In <strong>the</strong> classroom thisis achieved by engaging students, promoting independent learning and providing regular feedback.Students will also be encouraged <strong>to</strong> reflect upon <strong>the</strong>ir own learning.As we embed <strong>the</strong> use of technology in our teaching we are able <strong>to</strong> provide a challenging andinnovative learning experience that students enjoy. Specialist teachers and ICT facilities are available inall classrooms <strong>to</strong> both engage and motivate students in <strong>the</strong>ir learning. As a school this is also achievedthrough recognising <strong>the</strong> skills and celebrating <strong>the</strong> success of our students.We aim <strong>to</strong> provide and equip students with <strong>the</strong> skills and attributes needed <strong>to</strong> be successful beyondschool. Visits from <strong>the</strong> <strong>Edgbarrow</strong> team have beenvery successful and have included <strong>the</strong> fantastic scienceworkshops and maths puzzles.” Primary HeadteacherAt <strong>the</strong> Heart of <strong>the</strong>CommunityAt <strong>Edgbarrow</strong>, all students know that <strong>the</strong>y are valued as individualsand can make a positive contribution <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> school, local area andwider community.At school <strong>the</strong> students’ voice is heard through Year Grouprepresentatives and <strong>the</strong> full school council, who will play a partin staff appointments, writing policies and suggesting schoolimprovements. Our students also act <strong>to</strong> foster mutual respectwithin a safe, caring and supportive community. Year 11 studentslead <strong>the</strong> ‘Listening Ear’ programme for students who may havedifficulties starting at a new school or with peer relationships. Thewhole school makes a positive contribution by organising andparticipating in our annual sponsored walk, which raises money for<strong>the</strong> school and charity.In <strong>the</strong> local community, our Gifted and Talented students have ledsummer school activities with primary schools, while o<strong>the</strong>rs haveworked with local councillors <strong>to</strong> complete local environmentalsurveys. Students are also encouraged <strong>to</strong> act as leaders through<strong>the</strong> Business and Enterprise specialism where <strong>the</strong>y initiate andre<strong>view</strong> <strong>the</strong> school’s contribution with local community groups.We continue <strong>to</strong> have excellent relationships with our partnerprimary schools. Through our specialism we have provided arange of liaison events across several subjects, as well as fair tradeand enterprise activities. Through a sports leadership programme,<strong>Edgbarrow</strong> students also organise and lead events at primaryschools.Our students have also made a positive contribution <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> widercommunity. <strong>Edgbarrow</strong> students have represented <strong>the</strong> local areaat <strong>the</strong> National Youth Parliament and are regular visi<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>British and European Parliaments.Celebrating SuccessThe school has <strong>the</strong> highest expectations of students at all times and seeks <strong>to</strong>work with parents and carers <strong>to</strong> achieve <strong>the</strong> best outcomes. Our aim is <strong>to</strong>motivate students by rewarding positive behaviour, whe<strong>the</strong>r this is academicachievement or through displaying skills or talents.<strong>Edgbarrow</strong> <strong>School</strong> seeks <strong>to</strong> reward students’ achievements through a rangeof activities. All students may receive merits or have <strong>the</strong>ir efforts recognisedin Year Group assemblies and outings. At <strong>the</strong> end of each year ourCelebration of Success and Presentation Evenings recognise students’ examresults and those who have worked hard <strong>to</strong> be successful in <strong>the</strong>ir field.
