It presents a comprehensive approach to theexploration of these various, selected topics. The courseoffers opportunities for the student to examine relevanttopics affecting education in breadth and depth.EDU 628 Re-certification Practicum (1-6) A practicumconsisting of one hundred or more clock hours of contactwith students in the classroom setting, fifty percent ofwhich shall consist of performing instructional duties underthe supervision of a designated supervisor. The practicumis a requirement by the Nebraska Department of Educationfor renewing certificates that have lapsed more than fiveyears. (Graded S-NC)EDU 629 Research Application: Theory Into Practice (3-6)Original research in education collaboratively designedby student and faculty advisor. The results of the researchproject may be presented to faculty, school boards,community groups, or other appropriate groups.EDU 632 Clinical for Early Childhood (3) Prerequisites: Allprevious course work in the endorsement. A one-semesterexperience and study concerning programs in early childhoodeducation in selected school settings. Arrangedcooperatively with public/private schools and <strong>Wayne</strong> <strong>State</strong><strong>College</strong>. This is the final course in the ECE program. Includes40 clinical hoursEDU 636 Introduction to Alternative Education (3) Thiscourse is an introduction and overview of alternativeeducation in America and provides specific informationabout at-risk youth: identification and characteristics aswell as historical, economic, social and political aspectsof alternative education. Plans, programs, and alternativeschools will be reviewed. Overall, this course providesexperienced teachers with knowledge and skills, needed forthe identification of at-risk youth, program planning, andimplementation. Each student will be required to develop alocal plan of action to identify and assist at-risk youth.EDU 637 Program and Teaching Strategies for AtypicalPopulations (3) This course presents a wide variety ofmethods and materials that can be used for individualizedinstruction: computer-aided instruction; tutorial guidelines;independent study; community centered experiences;outcome based education; home-based programs; teacherstudentnegotiated curricula; and distance learning. Thecourse builds on the basic knowledge of AdvancedEducational Psychology to develop additional skills inteaching for life-long learning. The skills developed areappropriate for all levels of learning, Pre-K through AdultEducation.EDU 638 Practicum for Alternative School Teachers (3) Thison-site experience provides students an opportunity to bringtogether theory and practice in an alternative educationlearning environment. The actual field experience isplanned jointly by student and practicum supervisor andincludes activities that address the needs of at-risk youth.EDU 650 Research Design (3) A course designed to developknowledge of research, research skills and practicalutilization of research information. Graduate students willbe expected to use technology effectively and efficientlyfor any of the following purposes: to conduct literaturereviews, to formulate research problems, to developproposals, to participate in active research problems, and/or to understand and apply basic research tools of bothquantitative and qualitative analyses. Research Designhas a variable prefix (EDU, ENG, HIS, etc.). Dependingon the prefix, the course will be taught by content oreducation faculty members.EDU 651 Classroom Assessment (2) Prerequisite: LearningCommunity Commitment. This class is designed toacquaint students with the latest research related toclassroom assessment techniques and, further, to createopportunities for teachers to try out new assessmentpractices in their own classrooms. Special attention willbe given to efficient classroom data managment routinesthat can minimize the time burden for teachers whilemaximizing their understanding of individual studentstrengths and weaknesses. Enrollment in this class islimited to those students pursuing an MSE in Curriculumand Instruction through the Learning Community format.EDU 652 Instructional Theory and Practice (4) Prerequisite:Learning Community Commitment. This class isdesigned to acquaint students with the latest researchrelated to instructional theory and, further, to createdopportuniites for teachers to try out new instructionalapproaches. The course will survey various systems thatteachers may use to assess the pros and cons of variousinstructional approaches. Enrollment in this class islimited to those students pursuing an MSE in Curriculumand Instruction through the Learning Community format.EDU 654 Middle School Administration (3) A coursedesigned to acquaint the student with administrativetheories, principles, organization, and philosophy for themiddle level school. This course is a systematic study ofthe middle school principalship. Emphasis is placed onrelating theories of administration, learning and teachingin the middle grades, and an organization of the middlelevel school to address the unique needs of the middlegrades student.EDU 655 School Law: Constitutional Aspects and Cases(3) A course designed to acquaint the student with theprinciples of school law. Some of the areas included are:The legal system; compulsory schooling; control overstudents; control over teachers; freedom and religion; andcontrol over ideas.
