This course requiresactive participation and will be graded satisfactory-no credit(S-NC). Open only to elementary education majors or bypermission.EDU 201 Introduction to Professional Education (3) Thiscourse combines study of schools and society with a25-clock hour field experience in public schools. Studentsare challenged to reflect on their past experiences, attitudes,and beliefs and compare them with qualities of goodteaching. They are introduced to historical perspectivesand philosophical questions to understand the purpose, role,and function of schools in society and provide structure onwhich the theories and models of teaching in succeedingcourses are developed.EDU 211 Child and Adolescent Growth and Development (3)Students construct a conceptual basis for understanding thegrowth and development of children from birth throughadolescence. Fundamental theories of cognitive, socialemotional,physical and moral development are explored inorder to better understand the importance of the nurturingrole of the teacher in human development and learning.EDU 216 Children’s Literature (2) A study of children’s literatureto include historical development, contemporary topicsand trends, genre, author/illustrator study, and integrationinto the elementary curriculum.EDU 217 Diverse Family Systems (3) The conflict betweenassumptions and realities in regard to the modernAmerican family and its effect on the learning of childrenis the focus of this course. Students will begin tounderstand the developmental stages of careers, familiesand individuals and the study of systems theory. Studentswill examine techniques and programs to involve familiesin assessing and planning for individual children includingchildren with disabilities and developmental delays andgifted children. The study of parenting relationshipswithin families and communities and identifying andworking with at-risk children, children of diverse cultures,and children of dysfunctional families prepare students tolink the school with the community.EDU 225 Educational Technology Applications (1) Anintroduction to the use of technology as an instructionaltool. Basic technology skills will be developedusing activities that could be integrated into the K-12curriculum. National, state and Elementary Educationprogram technology competencies will be addressed. Maybe repeated with different topics up to six hours.EDU 230 Integrating the Creative Arts for Children (3)This activity-based course will use the integration of art,music, theater and movement with the major curricularthemes in early childhood education to extend and enrichlearning. Through interdisciplinary themes and connectionsthe students will be guided in the development andsharing of thematic units, hands-on activities, and instructionalstrategies with respect to curricular integration.EDU 275 Introduction to P-12 Instruction (3) Prerequisite:Completion of or concurrent enrollment in EDU 201Introduction to Professional Education. Throughexploration of research-based teaching models this courseconnects students’ intuitive talents with methods ofteaching in order to prepare a working knowledge basefor teaching. The course allows for the integration andapplication of methods, materials, and lesson planning.This course will include field and/or clinical experiences.EDU 302 Curriculum and Assessment in the ElementarySchool (3) A holistic view of curriculum planning,implementation and assessment in the elementary school.Will address development of mission statements, goals andoutcomes. Field experience will be arranged.EDU 303 Developmentally Appropriate Practices for theYoung Child (3) Prerequisites: FCS 120, 220 and 230.Completion of any Gateway not required. A methodscourse focusing on effective strategies for working withyoung children (birth through age 8). Emphasis is placedon inquiry and critical thinking in social studies, science,health and safety as well as classroom management.EDU 310 Reading and Writing in the Middle/SecondarySchool (1) Prerequisite: Admission to teacher education.This course addresses the methodology, practicalapplication, and variations for teaching reading andwriting. The focus of the course is to provide reading and
Education 89writing strategies that provide tools to enhance content areainstruction.EDU 318 Professional Communication (3) Students willexamine the concepts of written and spoken communicationas practiced in a healthy, productive school environmentwith a focus on human interaction. Students will evaluatetheir communicative ability in parent-teacher conferencing,staff meetings, interpretations of test results and in dayto-daycommunication with students, colleagues andadministration.EDU 321 Educational Psychology: Models and Theories ofLearning (3) Prerequisite: Admission to teacher education.Continuing to build the knowledge base of a professional,the nature of the learner is the focus of this course.Students will begin to understand the human learningprocess and individual differences in learning styles asexplained by theoretical models and current research on thebrain. Learning theories to be examined include, but are notlimited to, those advanced by cognitive, behavioral, social,and humanistic psychology. In addition, students willdemonstrate ways that learning models are integrated intoeffective teaching, preparing them to understand a varietyof teaching methods.EDU 322 Secondary Education Practicum (1) Prerequisite:Admission to teacher education. A field experience, offeredwith EDU 400 Secondary Schools, designed for practicalapplication of the teaching, learning process. This courseexplores awareness of the entire school, how students learn,and what teachers really do. (Note: Special Educationmajors are exempted from this course.)EDU 323 Content Area Practicum (1) Prerequisite: Admissionto teacher education. A field experience, offered withEDU 409 Content Area Methods and Materials, designedwith the content area(s) for practical application of theteaching, learning process. This course will focus on activeparticipation within the classroom setting under supervisionof the classroom teacher.EDU 331 Development of Physical Education and Healthin the Elementary School (3) Prerequisite: Admission toteacher education. To prepare emergent professionals to beconfident in their ability to implement Physical Educationand Health and to create an environment in which studentsbecome confident learners and participants of PhysicalEducation and Health.EDU 335 Clinical Experience I (2) Prerequisites: Completionof Gateway 2 and the Technology Proficiency. Must be takenconcurrently with EDU 423. Incorporating knowledgeand skills developed in all previous and current ProfessionalEducation and Elementary Field Endorsement course workwith emphasis on language arts and social studies. Willinclude significant field experience.EDU 340 Early Reading and Language Arts (4) Prerequisite:completion of Gateway 2, EDU 216, EDU 275 or SPD 260.Current methods, materials, and research findings relatedto the teaching of the six language arts in a balanced programup through the primary level with special emphasison reading and writing. Comprehension, fluency, phonemicawareness and phonics instruction will be addressed.EDU 341 Intermediate Reading and Language Arts (4)Prerequisite: completion of Gateway 2, EDU 216, EDU275 or SPD 261. Current methods, materials, and researchfindings related to the teaching of the six languagearts in a balanced program up through the intermediatelevel with special emphasis on reading and writing. Contentarea reading, vocabulary development, and comprehensionwill be addressed.EDU 350 The Middle Level Teacher (3) Prerequisite:Admission to teacher education and Gateway 2 passage.In this course, students will examine the history andphilosophy of middle level education, the concepts ofteaming and learning communities, knowledge specificto curriculum and learner-centered instructional design,assessment appropriate for middle level learners, andother organizational and communication models specificto middle level education. This course should be takenprior to enrollment in EDU 332, 423, 431, 432, and thetwo required sections of EDU 409.EDU 367/567 Human Relations (3) Prerequisite: (EducationMajors Only) Completion of EDU 201 with a grade ofC or better, or graduate standing, or instructor approval.This course provides a critical examination of communityand its relationship to the well-being of individuals andgroups. Building on students’ experience of differencesin learning and culture, course activities will helpstudents develop observation and communication skills,and understand the types of professional relationshipsthat sustain diverse groups in school and community.The course establishes a base of human relations thatsignificantly influence the learning of teaching methodsin students’ specialty areas. This course is required andapproved by the Nebraska Department of Education formeeting Nebraska certification requirements.EDU 380 Models of Discipline for the Secondary Classroom(2). Prerequisite: Admission to teacher education. Toassist 7-12 preservice teachers to develop an optimaldiscipline system. This development reflects the beliefthat the most effective discipline system is one designedby the individual teacher. The course further assists thepreservice teacher to organize and implement a disciplinesystem that addresses student needs, social realities, anddiverse styles of learning and teaching.EDU 400 Secondary Schools (2) Prerequisite: Admissionto teacher education. This course examines thedevelopment of the course of study, a lesson plan, a unitplan, objectives, planning, methodology, assessment, andthe use of multimedia. Offered with EDU 322 SecondaryEducation Practicum.EDU 405 Directed Teaching, Elementary School (6-12)Prerequisite: Admission to the professional semester.
