Open only to elementary education majors or bypermission.EDU 201 Introduction to Professional Education (3) Thiscourse combines study of schools and society with a25-clock hour field experience in public schools. Studentsare challenged to reflect on their past experiences, attitudes,and beliefs and compare them with qualities of goodteaching. They are introduced to historical perspectivesand philosophical questions to understand the purpose, role,and function of schools in society and provide structure onwhich the theories and models of teaching in succeedingcourses are developed.EDU 211 Child and Adolescent Growth and Development (3)Students construct a conceptual basis for understanding thegrowth and development of children from birth throughadolescence. Fundamental theories of cognitive, socialemotional,physical and moral development are explored inorder to better understand the importance of the nurturingrole of the teacher in human development and learning.EDU 216 Children’s Literature (2) A study of children’s literatureto include historical development, contemporary topicsand trends, genre, author/illustrator study, and integrationinto the elementary curriculum.EDU 217 Diverse Family Systems (3) The conflict betweenassumptions and realities in regard to the modernAmerican family and its effect on the learning of childrenis the focus of this course. Students will begin tounderstand the developmental stages of careers, familiesand individuals and the study of systems theory. Studentswill examine techniques and programs to involve familiesin assessing and planning for individual children includingchildren with disabilities and developmental delays andgifted children. The study of parenting relationshipswithin families and communities and identifying andworking with at-risk children, children of diverse cultures,and children of dysfunctional families prepare students tolink the school with the community.EDU 225 Educational Technology Applications (1) Anintroduction to the use of technology as an instructionaltool. Basic technology skills will be developedusing activities that could be integrated into the K-12curriculum. National, state and Elementary Educationprogram technology competencies will be addressed. Maybe repeated with different topics up to six hours.EDU 230 Integrating the Creative Arts for Children (3)This activity-based course will use the integration of art,music, theater and movement with the major curricularthemes in early childhood education to extend and enrichlearning. Through interdisciplinary themes and connectionsthe students will be guided in the development andsharing of thematic units, hands-on activities, and instructionalstrategies with respect to curricular integration.EDU 275 Introduction to P-12 Instruction (3) Prerequisite:Completion of or concurrent enrollment in EDU 201Introduction to Professional Education. Throughexploration of research-based teaching models this courseconnects students’ intuitive talents with methods ofteaching in order to prepare a working knowledge basefor teaching. The course allows for the integration andapplication of methods, materials, and lesson planning.This course will include field and/or clinical experiences.EDU 302 Curriculum and Assessment in the ElementarySchool (3) A holistic view of curriculum planning,implementation and assessment in the elementary school.Will address development of mission statements, goals andoutcomes. Field experience will be arranged.EDU 303 Developmentally Appropriate Practices for theYoung Child (3) Prerequisites: FCS 120, 220 and 230.Completion of any Gateway not required. A methodscourse focusing on effective strategies for working withyoung children (birth through age 8). Emphasis is placedon inquiry and critical thinking in social studies, science,health and safety as well as classroom management.EDU 310 Reading and Writing in the Middle/SecondarySchool (1) Prerequisite: Admission to teacher education.This course addresses the methodology, practicalapplication, and variations for teaching reading andwriting.
