Counseling 77CSL 615 Career Development and Life Planning (3) Thiscourse is designed to prepare graduate level counselortrainees to facilitate career and life planning decisionswithin an applied professional setting. Typical theoreticalperspectives associated with career development andlife-planning counseling will be highlighted. An analysisof the psychological, sociological, and physiologicalaspects of human behavior, which typically impact uponcareer decisions, will be emphasized. Career developmentprogram planning, organization, implementation,administration, and evaluation will be addressed.Assessment instruments and techniques associated withcareer planning and decision-making will be explored.Technology-based career development applications andstrategies, including computer-assisted career guidanceinformation will be utilized. This class will include suchtopics as foundations and resources, career-counselingprograms for special populations, and techniques for careercounselinginterviewing. Career development programplanning, organization, implementation, administration, andevaluation will be addressed. Ethical issues associated withcareer counseling will be considered in detail.CSL 625 Individual and Group Assessment (3) This courseis designed to prepare graduate level counselor traineesto apply relevant principles of assessment and evaluationwithin an applied professional setting. Typical topicsfor discussion will include theoretical and historicalbases for assessment techniques; reliability and validitydimensions in testing; appraisal methods associated withstandardized tests; psychometric statistics upon whichassessment is based; strategies for selecting, administering,interpreting, and using assessment instruments; and typicalhuman qualities involved in the assessment process. Theassumptions, implications, and effects of assessment onminorities and on public policy will also be addressed.Diverse intervention strategies will be identified to meetthe needs of a multicultural society within an ever changingsocial milieu. Ethical issues associated with appraisalcounseling will be considered in detail.CSL 630 Developmental Counseling over the Lifespan (3) Thisis a course about basic human growth and development. Itis designed to prepare graduate level counselor traineesto apply relevant principles of human transformation overthe lifespan to Developmental Counseling TheoreticalPerspectives within an applied professional setting. Apresentation of personality dynamics and behavioralmanifestations at critical stages of development over thelifespan will be provided based on a Bio-Psycho-Socialperspective. This class will include such topics as 1)stage wise progression; 2) psychosocial crisis; 3) chemicaladdiction and dependency; 4) environmental factorsimpacting on both adaptive and maladaptive adjustment;and 5) strategies for facilitating positive developmentover the lifespan. Such factors as age, race, religiouspreference, physical disability, vulnerability to addiction anddependency; sexual orientation, ethnicity and culture, familypatterns, gender, socioeconomic status, and intellectualability will also be addressed in relationship to attitudeformation and behavioral response. Diverse interventionstrategies associated with developmental counseling will beconsidered in detail.CSL 641 Counseling Children (1) Prerequisite: CSL 600.This course is designed to adapt counseling skills to thedevelopmental needs and special problems of childrenwithin a cultural context. Appropriate techniques includeplay therapy, expressive arts, and bibliotherapy. Ethicalconsiderations in counseling children are addressed.CSL 642 Consultation (2) Prerequisite: CSL 600, 685. Thiscourse is designed to introduce models of consultationthrough which counselors collaborate with colleagues,teachers, or parents in problem solving directed toward theneeds of a third person. Through practice, students engagein skills facilitating development through the stages ofconsultation and reflection on their performance.CSL 643 Elementary School Counseling (1) This courseis designed to address the role of the elementary schoolcounselor and services provided through the school:counseling, consulting, and coordination. Emphasis is onorganizing and managing developmental guidance activities,career education, coordination of student services, referralservices, and collaboration with other professionals in thecommunity.CSL 644 Secondary School Counseling (1) This course focuseson the role of the secondary school counselor and servicesprovided through the school. Emphasis in this practicalcourse is in resources, procedures, and materials availablefor the career, academic, personal, and social development ofsecondary school students.CSL 645 Marriage and Family Counseling (3) Prerequisite:CSL 600. This course is designed to introduce systemstheories to include an understanding of (a) familydevelopment, issues and concepts, (b) interventionsassociated with major family therapy models, and (c) socialconstructivist models, e.g. Solution-Focused Brief Therapyand Narrative Therapy.CSL 646 Student Affairs in Higher Education Counseling (2)This course surveys the history, purpose, function, legal andethical issues of student affairs in higher education counseling.Characteristics and developmental issues of college studentsare described. Needs of students from diverse culturalgroups are identified. Models of programs to meet theseneeds are examined. The essential skills and competenciesof student affairs managers are described.CSL 665 Group Counseling (3) Prerequisites: CSL 600, 685,and admission to the program. This course is designed toprovide theoretical and experiential understanding of groupcounseling with emphasis on types of groups, planning,orientation, stages of group development, group memberroles and behaviors, effective leadership skills, theoretical
