76 <strong>Wayne</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>College</strong>CSL 409/509 Human Sexuality Counseling (3) This course isa study of Human Sexuality Counseling from a Bio-Psycho-Social theory of human development. Emphasis is on anindividualized perspective; dynamics of psychological,sociological, and physiological predisposition; and amultidimensional approach to intervention. Assessmentof individual needs, intervention problem design andimplementation, and documentation of progress is alsoaddressed. Etiology, diagnosis, treatment planning andtherapeutic interventions are based on contemporarydiagnostic descriptions. Diverse intervention strategies willbe identified to meet the needs of a multicultural society.Specific protocols will be illustrated for diagnosis, treatmentplanning, and therapeutic intervention. Counselees will bepresented with specific case studies and videotapes of actualcounseling sessions. Ethical issues associated with humansexuality counseling will be considered in detail.CSL 440/540 Chemical Dependency Counseling (3) Thiscourse is a study of chemical dependency counselingfrom a Bio-Psycho-Social theory of human development.Emphasis is on an individualized perspective; dynamicsof psychological, sociological, and physiologicalpredisposition; and a multidimensional approach tointervention. Assessment of individual needs, interventionprogram design and implementation, and documentation ofprogress is also addressed. Classification of chemicals andtheir effects on the human body; tolerance, rebound, andwithdrawal; and various treatment modalities and settingswill be explored. Etiology, diagnosis, treatment planningand therapeutic interventions are based on contemporarydiagnostic descriptions. Diverse intervention strategies willbe identified to meet the needs of a multicultural society.Specific protocols will be illustrated for diagnosis, treatmentplanning and therapeutic intervention. Counselees will bepresented with specific case studies and videotapes of actualcounseling sessions. Ethical issues associated with chemicaldependency counseling will be considered in detail.CSL 445/545 Clinical Issues in Chemical Dependency (2) Thiscourse focuses on counseling approaches for chemicallydependent persons with special issues including dualdiagnoses, relationship(s) with chemically dependent familymembers, problems associated with a specific drug ofchoice and problems common to the populations of women,adolescents, and the elderly. Specific counseling approacheswill be suggested for each. Suggestions for helping familymembers of persons with these issues will also be explored.CSL 447/547 Multicultural Counseling (3) This courseexplores the special issues involved in working with clientsand students who are impacted by cultural influences ofminority groups in America. Special counseling techniquesand adaptations of traditional counseling approaches whenworking with diverse cultural groups will be studied.CSL 449/549 Alcohol/Drug Assessment, Case Planning andManagement (2) This course describes processes involvedin collecting self-report and assessment data as a basis formaking decisions regarding the diagnosis and selection ofappropriate level of care of persons with alcohol and drugdisorders.CSL 490 Human Service Counseling Seminar (3) Prerequisites:90 hours, 36 hours in major: including CSL 202, 218, 324,342, 403. This course focuses on refinement of counselingcompetencies for general and special populations. Attentionis given to counseling from initiation to termination.Current issues are addressed in seminar format with eachadvanced level student conducting and sharing research.Additional activities include (a) internship seeking andplacement and (b) political advocacy.CSL 497 Human Service Counseling Internship (10)Prerequisites: CSL 490, 36 hours in major: including CSL202, 218, 324, 342, 403. Case studies are used for discussion of ethical issuesin developing competent, culturally-sensitive professionals.Professional identity is addressed through awareness of ourhistory, professional roles, professional associations (ACA),credentialing, and advocacy.CSL 600 Theories of Counseling (3) This course is designedto introduce the major theories of counseling with an initialexposure to the counseling relationship and correspondingtheoretical techniques. Psychodynamic, humanistic,and cognitive-behavioral theories are emphasized withbrief discussion of systems theories, brief therapy, andfeminist therapy models. Each student begins to integratequintessential elements from these theories with theirexperiences and beliefs toward a personal model that willprovide a way to conceptualize client needs and chooseappropriate interventions. Professional orientation and theACA Code of Ethics are introduced, particularly in referenceto training standards. (Prerequisite for CSL 641, 642, 645,665, 685, 686, 697; Minimum grade of B- is required.)
