Counseling 754. Earn at least a “C” in CSL 202 Introduction to HumanService Counseling and continue to demonstrate anempathic understanding of people and knowledge of ethical,professional intervention.5. Earn at least a “C” in CSL 324 Fundamentals of Counselingand continue to demonstrate understanding of counselingtheory in assisting people.6. Achieve and maintain at least a 2.5 GPA in the major.7. Take the writing section of the Pre-Professional SkillsTest prior to completing 60 hours. Those students scoringbelow 172 (computer form, 318) will be required to prepareand present a plan for remediation to the HSC faculty.Upon approval of the Counseling & Special EducationDepartment, students will need to successfully complete theplan and provide documentation.8. Demonstrate mental health and personal adjustmentcommonly expected within the counseling profession andmodel ethical standards.9. Receive a favorable recommendation by the Human ServiceCounseling faculty based on their professional judgment ofthe student’s ability to be of help to others.The Professional Progress Committee will reviewcompleted applications and make recommendation to the Deanof Education and Counseling. Students granted admissionwill be notified by letter. Students denied admission will alsobe notified by letter. An appeal may be made to the Dean ofEducation and Counseling.Retention in the Human Service Counseling Program iscontingent upon maintaining the above requirements. A studentmay request a review or hearing before the Human ServiceCounseling faculty at any time.Admission to the Professional SeminarThe professional seminar is designed to prepare the student forplacement in the Human Service Counseling Internship. Tobe admitted to the seminar, a student must meet the followingrequirements:1. Officially admitted into the Human Service CounselingProgram.2. Earn a minimum of 90 hours of credit including 36 hours inthe major.3. Receive at least a “B-” in CSL 342 Interviewing Skills andcontinue to demonstrate the ability to relate empathicallyand therapeutically.Admission to the Human Service Counseling InternshipThe internship in human service counseling is designedto integrate the knowledge of theory and techniques withcounseling practice. To be admitted to the internship, a studentmust meet the following requirements:1. Retention in the Human Service Counseling Program.2. Complete CSL 490 with a grade of at least a “C”.3. Submission of a completed Internship Agreement at leastone month prior to the start of the internship.4. Approval of the instructor.Requirements for Graduation1. Students examine practicaltechniques that are helpful with individuals with mentalillnesses, such as depression and schizophrenia.CSL 218 Personal Growth Counseling (3) An introduction tothe study of personal growth counseling with an emphasisupon facilitating self awareness, personal growth, andadjustment. The role of counseling in promoting anunderstanding of oneself and others will be addressed alongwith such counseling issues as friendship, stress, motivation,work, decision making, emotions, intimate relationships,sexuality, and others.CSL 324 Fundamentals of Counseling (3) Introduction to basiccounseling theories and their associated assumptions, goals,and strategies to assist client change from a multiculturalperspective. (Grade of C or above is required for majorsonly.)CSL 342 Interviewing Skills (3) Prerequisite: Admission toHSC program. This course provides the basic concepts forstructuring the interview. Select approaches to counselingand case report writing will be considered. Helping skills ofattending, responding, and initiating action within interviewsituations will be emphasized. (Grade of B- is required formajors only.)CSL 403 Group Strategies in Counseling (3) Prerequisites:Admission to HSC program. The purpose of this course is tofacilitate self-awareness and relationship skills in counselingtrainees for implementation within group counseling settings.Communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills forgroup counseling will also be stressed.
