Computer Information Systems 71computer networks, including network concepts and networkoperating systems. The areas of network selection, installation, management, maintenance, troubleshooting, design and evaluation are addressed. Instructional strategiesfor teaching networking and managing the networkinginstructional environment will also be presented. Specialemphasis is placed on issues of security, scalability, and designfor maintainability. This course also addressed generalmethods, skills, and strategies essential for planning andmanaging authentic and meaningful information technologylearning experiences for students. Strategies for dealingwith diverse populations, wide ranges of computer literacylevels, and a variety of learning styles are considered. Thetopics of assessment, evaluation, and appropriate feedbacktechniques are explored. In addition the course providescoverage of the general management skills, techniques, andstrategies for planning, designing, implementing, evaluating, and managing the learning environment and the varioustechnology components, technical resources, and toolsthat are a part of it. The basic practice of database design, development, and management is presented and it rolein technology management is emphasized. Students willcomplete a significant technology planning or technologymanagement project in this course. That project will besupported by a database application.CIS 466/566 Advanced Data Base (3) Prerequisite: CIS 366or equivalent. An advanced study of data base planning, design, implementation, evaluation, and administration.Topics include: the ANSI/SPARC model for data basedevelopment, exploration of advanced considerationsrelated to various types of data base structures, the useof data bases for strategic advantage in the organization, management of all phases of the data base life, query andhuman factors considerations. Student will apply theory toa data base project.CIS 471/571 Networking IV (3) Prerequisite: CIS 371 orinstructor approval. This course builds upon the materialpresented in CIS 371 and provides the students withadditional networking theory. In addition, students willwork in a variety of “hands-on” settings to apply the theoryto modern computer networks and networking equipment.CIS 475/575 Topics in Computer Information Systems (3)Prerequisites: Varies by topic. Study of topics such assimulation, expert systems, and other areas in the forefrontof current CIS practices. Designated as a “hands on”,project-oriented course. The student will learn aboutthe techniques, tools and practices of contemporaryinformation systems domains. Topic and title will vary.May be repeated if topic and title are different.introduction to the management of projects. Emphasisis placed on both the technical aspects of the projectmanagement process and the management of the humanbehavioral/situational aspects of projects. The nature ofprojects is explored. The techniques and tools of projectmanagement are introduced. Operational, tactical, andstrategic implications of project management approachesare considered. The use of current project managementsoftware is incorporated. Students are also provided withan understanding of the many environmental and behavioralissues surrounding project management, and approachesto dealing with these issues. Graduate students in thiscourses have additional requirements beyond those for theundergraduate students.CIS 480/580 Seminar in Computer Information Systems (3)Prerequisite: Completion of 90 credit hours. A capstonecourse with emphasis on the management of informationsystems. Emphasis is placed on operational, tactical, andstrategic issues related to information systems management.Consideration is given to traditional and emerginginformation systems issues and topics. Students willwork with theoretical and practitioner literature from theinformation systems field in addressing several cases and/orprojects and in preparing and delivering presentations.Eligible seniors may enroll in 500 level graduate courses.Graduate CoursesCIS 530 Management Information Systems (3) See CIS 430CIS 554 Technology Platforms: Hardware and OperatingSystems (3) See CIS 454CIS 557 Networking and Technology Management (3)See CIS 457CIS 566 Advanced Data Base (3) See CIS 466CIS 571 Networking IV (3) See CIS 471CIS 575 Topics in Computer Information Systems (3)See CIS 475CIS 577 Project Management (3) See CIS 477CIS 580 Seminar in Comp Info Systems (3) See CIS 480CIS 632 Information Systems Technology and Management (3)Prerequisite: CBK management or BUS 604.
