Study of thestructure and function of cells, tissues, and organs of organisms.Prepared slides of human and other vertebrate organsand tissues will be studied with light microscopy. Studentswill also learn techniques associated with slide preparationand slide organization. A study of habitat assessment, ecosystemmanagement and ecological restoration. Students willintegrate knowledge gained from various disciplines todevelop conservation management plans.BIO 370 Introduction to Research (2) Prerequisite: A grade ofC- or better in BIO 110, 8 hours of Biology. This course isdesigned for Biology majors as an introduction to scientificwriting, library research, data collection and data analysis.The student will be expected to use the skills learned in thiscourse to establish a proposal for a research project forBIO 465 and 470.BIO 385 Microbiology (4) Prerequisites: A grade of C- orbetter in BIO 110, CHE 106. Topics of study detail thestructure and physiology of microorganisms includingmechanisms of pathogenesis. Beneficial aspects ofmicroorganisms are also discussed with regard to both thehuman body and the environment. A comparative studyof vertebrate embryonic development and anatomy withemphasis on morphogenesis, function, and evolution oforgan systems. (3 hours lecture, 3 hours lab)BIO 425 Evolution (3) Prerequisites: A grade of C- or better inBIO 110, and BIO 200, BIO 210, and BIO 320. The studyof the history of evolutionary thought, beginning with pre-Darwinian ideas and ending with our current understandingof evolutionary mechanisms. The course will explorethe evidence for evolution by examining the fossil record,comparative anatomy/physiology, and model field studies.Students will learn the model systems demonstratingthe mechanisms that drive evolution: mutation, selection,genetic drift, gene flow, and inbreeding. Evolution is a unifyingtheme in biology which integrates knowledge from allbiological disciplines. (3 hours lecture-lab combined)BIO 430/530 Parasitology (3) Prerequisite: BIO 110. Studyof animal parasites and the effects they have on their hosts.Studies in this course center on parasites of humans, othervertebrates and invertebrates. Taxonomy, morphology,development, physiology, identification, epidemiology andpathogenesis are emphasized. An understanding of humananatomy and histology would be beneficial to students takingthis courses. Parasitology is highly recommended forstudents interested in health-related, biomedical and biologicalcareers. (3 hours lecture-lab combined)BIO 434 Advanced Cellular Biology (3) Prerequisites: BIO320, CHE 107. An advanced study of the structure andfunction of the eukaryotic cell. Topics will include thebasics of modern cell biology including signal transduction,cell cycle regulation, and gene expression. (3 hours lecturelabcombined)BIO 445 Molecular Biology (3) Prerequisite: BIO 320. Thiscourse is designed to give students a working knowledgein the field of molecular biology. It will introduce cloningtechniques, DNA sequencing, site directed mutagenesis,electrophoresis and the polymerase chain reaction. Adiscussion of these techniques and current developments ingene therapy, forensic analysis and molecular systematicswill be included. (3 hours lecture/lab combined)BIO 451/551 Advanced Ecology (3) Prerequisite: BIO325. The study of interrelationships of organisms to theirenvironment in terrestrial and freshwater habitats.
