This course explores the effective use ofdigital imagery in graphic design. Aesthetic content inthe production, manipulation, and presentation of digitalimages will be stressed. Students will learn creativeand exploratory use of digital cameras, scanners, andappropriate computer programs. Utilizes Adobe Photoshop,Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe InDesign. (6 hoursstudio)ART 251 Pottery and Ceramics I (3) Study of the cultural,historical, and geological basis of clay. Foundationalmethods in both hand building construction and throwingon the wheel will be introduced. Surface decoration,glazing techniques, and kiln firing processes will bediscussed and performed. (6 hours studio)ART 271 Sculpture I (3) Prerequisites: ART 101, 110.Exploration of basic technical and expressive possibilitiesin three-dimensional form and space, including woodcarving, steel fabrication, and mixed-media assemblage.One project will include the creation of a large-scalesculpture suitable for outdoor display. (6 hours studio)ART 281 Printmaking I (3) Prerequisites: ART 101, 110.An introduction to printmaking concentrating on reliefprocesses. Primarily utilizing wood and plastics asmatrices, the student will execute a variety of editionedprints in black and white and color using single block,multiple block, and reductive techniques. Variousapproached to registration and color will be presented. (6hours studio)ART 314 K-8 Art Curriculum (2) Prerequisites: ART 101,110, Sophomore/Junior. Preparation to teach art andorganize appropriate art experiences for students K-8. Thecourse includes: history and philosophy of art educationas it relates to creative experiences for K-8 students, skillsin teaching major concepts reflected in art disciplines,service and community learning, interdisciplinary lessondevelopment, art hazards and safety, and assessment.Current trends and research will be covered. (4 hoursstudio)ART 315 Art and Creative Processes in Education (2)(Designed for Elementary Ed, and Special Ed. majors.)This course will examine how the visual arts play a crucialrole in improving students’ ability to use higher-orderthinking skills as they draw on a range of intelligencesand learning styles for non-verbal literacy. Course contentincludes creative exploration of art concepts, media andskill development and art hazards awareness throughlecture/studio experience. Pedagogical methods willinclude Discipline-Based Art Education componentsof criticism, aesthetics, production and history and theintegration of Art across the curriculum. (3 hours lecturelaboratory)ART 316 Secondary School Art (3) Prerequisite: ART 314,Junior/Senior. Preparation to teach art and organizeappropriate art experiences for the secondary levelstudent, grades 9-12. Includes history and philosophyof art education as it relates to secondary level teaching.Topics to be covered include: teaching art, art hazards,curriculum planning and assessment, studio, lesson plans,current trends, community and service learning, advocacy,developing resource materials, and demonstrated teaching.(6 hours studio)ART 321 Painting II (3) Prerequisite: ART 200, 221.Advanced painting concepts using the acrylic paintingmedium. Emphasis will be placed on a variety oftechniques which include mixed media. Subject matterwill explore modern and contemporary themes ofabstraction and non-representation. (ART 204 prerequisite waived for studentsdeclaring a minor in Online Media or the CIS majorwith Applied E-Commerce Paths concentration) Coursedesigned to develop problem solving skills in order tocommunicate a specific message to a specific audience.Development of aesthetic skills in layout, typography,and design along with basic computer software skills areemphasized.
