Present the Fifteen-Hour Graduate Student EvaluationForm to your advisor when you have completed between9 and 15 credit hours. This form will initiate theactions below for admission to the graduate counselingprogram.g. Students need a favorable recommendation by theCounseling Department faculty based on professionaljudgment of the applicant’s ability to perform as acompetent professional and maintain the degree ofmental health and personal adjustment commonlyexpected in the counseling profession.h. The names of students who have completed all applicationmaterials and have been favorably recommendedby the Counseling Department faculty will be submittedto the Professional Progress Committee (PPC) forapproval. The applicant will be notified of the decisionby letter from the Dean of Education and Counseling.Admission to the graduate degree program in counselingwill become official once a letter of acceptance hasbeen sent to the applicant. Applicants denied admissionwill also be notified by letter. Unsuccessful applicantsmay request a review or hearing before the CounselingDepartment faculty who will forward theirrecommendation to the Dean of Education andCounseling.Exceptions to the above criteria require exceptionalityshown by the student in the areas of counseling skills andwork experience, unanimous Counseling Departmentfaculty approval, and approval of the Dean of EducationCurriculum & InstructionEducation Foundations & Leadership DepartmentBrandenburg Education BuildingThe Curriculum and Instruction program is designed primarilyfor K-12 teachers who wish to remain in the classroomand combine a teaching enhancement program with educationalleadership and curriculum development skills. Becausethere are a large variety of occupations that include educationaldimensions, the Curriculum and Instruction programmay appeal to some non-teachers as well, for it offers thewidest array of graduate study possibilities here at WSC. Itshould be noted that conferral of the MSE in Curriculum andInstruction to non-teachers will not result in teacher certification.Students may combine a professional education core, usuallyselected from EDU 603, 626, 627, 650, 658, 674, with oneof the areas of emphasis listed below:Alternative EducationBusiness and Information Technology EducationCommunication Arts EducationCurriculum & Instruction (learning community delivery model)Early Childhood EducationElementary EducationEnglish EducationEnglish as a Second LanguageFamily and Consumer Sciences Educationand Counseling.3. Admission to Candidacy for the DegreeEligibility for admission to candidacy for the MSE degreein Counseling is established when all of the followingconditions have been met:a. Completion of all procedures for program admission.b. CSL 600 Theories of Counseling: minimum grade of“B-”.c. CSL 685 Practicum in Counseling: minimum grade of“B-” and attain an ability to relate empathically andtherapeutically.d. CSL 686 Advanced Practicum in Counseling: minimumgrade of “B-” and attain an ability to relateempathically and therapeutically.4. Approval for Graduationa. Obtain a minimum grade of “B-” in CSL 697 Internshipin Counseling and achieve an ability to initiate entrylevel skills expected of a beginning master’s degreelevel counselor.b. Maintain a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA in all graduatecourse work based on a 4.0 scale.c. Model ethical and personal behavior articulated in theAmerican Counseling Association Code of Ethics andStandards of Practice. Compliance will be determinedby the professional judgment of the counseling faculty.d. Request approval to submit a portfolio in fulfillment ofthe requirement for a comprehensive examination incounseling. The portfolio must meet the criterionestablished by the Counseling Department.e. Complete all requirements for graduation.Industrial Technology Education-Vocational EducationMathematics EducationMusic EducationScience EducationSocial Sciences EducationEach of these areas of emphasis is directed by a professorin-chargeand each has a core curriculum component alongwith discipline-specific curricular expectations describedbelow.Students pursuing an MSE in Curriculum and Instructionwill have dual advisors, one from the discipline-based contentarea and one for the professional education core. Both advisorswill participate in the 15-hour evaluation and interview for admissionto the program, and in the development of the programof study. Both advisors will also participate in the comprehensiveexamination development and grading.Requirements for Admission to Degree Program1. Graduate from a regionally accredited college/university.2. Submit a Graduate Application for Admission and an officialtranscript of all previous college work to the WSCAdmissions Office.3. Provide two recommendations from individuals who haveobserved your effectiveness in professional work.4. Have a 2.75 undergraduate GPA or above or have completed12 graduate hours at WSC with a GPA of 3.25 orhigher.5. Complete the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) beforecompleting 9 credit hours.
