Graduate Studies 159CounselingA student without a teaching certificate may also completeany school counseling program above and earn the MSE inCounseling. Some states (such as Iowa) allow individuals withthis degree to serve as school counselors with the completionof a few additional courses. Students will be required to sign awaiver that acknowledges that this degree alone will not makethem eligible for a school counseling endorsement in Nebraska.Community CounselingA student may complete the MSE in community counselingas a first step to earning a license to provide counselingservices in public or private counseling agencies or in privatepractice.Student Affairs Practice in Higher EducationA student may serve as a counselor in a technical school,college, or university upon completion of this program ofstudy. These counselors may also facilitate student transitionsto professional education and career placement.Licensure of Mental Health Practitioners andCertification of Professional CounselorsLicensure as a mental health practitioner and certificationas a professional counselor in Nebraska is accomplishedthrough the Department of Health. Following application for graduate study, anadvisor from the Counseling Department will be assignedto work closely with each student to develop a program ofstudy and provide academic advising during the course ofstudies. Admission to graduate study at WSC precedesapplication to the graduate degree program in Counseling.Graduates have seven years to complete a graduate program.The seven year period begins with the first courseincluded in the Program.2. Admission to the Program AreaAfter admission to graduate studies, the student mustapply for admission to the counseling program.a. To request admission to the counseling program,the applicant must file a formal application with theCounseling Department during enrollment in CSL 600or during the second semester of course work as adeclared counselor degree candidate, whichever comesfirst.b. The applicant must complete a notarized form showingcompliance with felony and misdemeanor involvingmoral turpitude regulation (form must be filed in FieldExperience Office; ANY further convictions must bebrought to the attention of the Field Experience Officeimmediately after conviction).c. The applicant will select two persons who are knowledgeableof personal qualities conducive to successwithin the counseling profession to send letters ofrecommendation on forms supplied by the department.d. Prior to completion of 12 credit hours, the applicantmust complete a program of study for a Master ofScience in Education (MSE) degree in Counseling inconsultation with an advisor in the Counseling Department.e. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores must besent before or during the first 9 credit hours of coursework. The sum of the verbal score, quantitative score,and (100 X Analytical Writing Section) will be addedto the student’s undergraduate GPA times 100. The
