Study of the interpretation of standardized and nonstandardizedassessment of exceptional learners to diagnosespecific individual learning needs. Emphasis upon thecollaborative application of interpreted assessments forprescriptive precision teaching to enhance learning in theleast restrictive environment. Included is consultativeapplication of the IFSP, IEP, ITP, and IPP to integratededucational settings. Examination of assistive technologyand vocational transition.SPD 452/552 Consultation and Collaboration Practices forExceptional Learners (3) Trans-disciplinary consultationand collaboration with parents and educatiors of exceptionallearners and related special services personnel. Emphasis isupon culturally responsive models and approaches directedtoward meeting the unique educational needs of exceptionallearners. The course is appropriate for educationalpractitioners and community agency personnel. Directapplication of the knowledge of exceptionalities to theclassroom or agency population is expected.SPD 609 Neuropsychology of Exceptional Learners (3)Understanding the unique learning characteristics ofthe exceptional student. Brain research as it relates toexceptionality is studied. Emphasis on learning ability andthe psychological foundation for selected teaching strategiesfor exceptional students.SPD 610 Curriculum Modification in LRE (3) Prerequisites:SPD 151 or 608, 609, 631. Emphasis on the educationalmodifications needed for exceptional learner’s successin the General Education setting and to comply with themandates of the IEPs. The six areas ofgiftedness identified by the federal law will be specificallyaddressed.SPD 631 Assessment, Diagnosis, and Interpretation (3)Prerequisites: SPD 151 or 608. An advanced course toprepare the special educator to be a team leader in theidentification process for exceptional learners. Emphasison interpretation of assessment data into educationalprogramming for the individual exceptional student.SPD 661 Clinical Application (3-6) Prerequisites: Admissionto special education MSE degree program and advisor’sapproval. Special Educator Option: This course focuseson the student’s application of new learning strategiesin a sequence of planning and instructional phases toserve students with mild/moderate disabilities in K-12general and special education settings. An individualizedprofessional development plan is written by the advisorwith the student, and the student’s local special educationadministrator’s input. This courseprovides experiences for the candidate to teach, to planand to conduct staff development programs, to developinstructional materials for high ability students, and toconduct evaluation of student learning and programeffectiveness.SPD 663 Applied Research (3) Prerequisites: Admissionto special education MSE degree program and advisor’sapproval. Special Educator option or Instructional Manageroption: This course provides for a laboratory or fieldsetting in which students can implement the research datacollection under the direction of the student’s researchcommittee. (Letter grade will be recorded)SPD 667 Multicultural Aspects of Curriculum Planning forExceptional Learners (3) Understanding the individualeducational needs of culturally and linguistically diverseexceptional students. Multicultural bilingual specialeducation, academic skill acquisition, linguistic diversity,(including but not limited to African American, Hispanic,Asian American, and Native American), and testing/identification discrimination issues are studied.SPD 699 Thesis (3-6) Prerequisites: EDU 650, SPD 663,admission to special education MSE degree program,advisor approval and approval by the student’s researchcommittee. The research question will be approved by thestudent’s research committee during enrollment in EDU650. The student will write the thesis and defend it beforethe student’s research committee and the WSC community.
