SpecialEducation majors will spend one half of their directedteaching experience at the K-6 level. Emphasis on behaviormanagement for parental training and involvement;assistance for the educator in the general educationclassroom; and early childhood behavioral disabilities areincluded.SPD 431 Diagnosis and Prescription for IndividualInstruction and Curriculum P-12 (3) Prerequisite: SPD331. Study of the interpretation of standardized and nonstandardizedassessment of exceptional learners to diagnosespecific individual learning needs. Emphasis upon thecollaborative application of interpreted assessments forprescriptive precision teaching to enhance learning in theleast restrictive environment. Included is consultativeapplication of the IFSP, IEP, ITP, and IPP to integratededucational settings. Examination of assistive technologyand vocational transition.SPD 452/552 Consultation and Collaboration Practices forExceptional Learners (3) Trans-disciplinary consultationand collaboration with parents and educatiors of exceptionallearners and related special services personnel. Emphasis isupon culturally responsive models and approaches directedtoward meeting the unique educational needs of exceptionallearners. See SPD430.SPD 552 Consultation and Collaboration Practices forExceptional Learners (3) See SPD 452.SPD 572 Identification of Mild/Moderate Disabilities (3)Prerequisites: SPD 151 or 608, SPD 252, SPD 404 or 504.Provides training and experience in the administration andinterpretation of formal diagnostic instrument rating scalesand checklists and psychometric devices which may be usedto screen, identify, and make educational plans for studentswith disabilities.SPD 608 Survey of Exceptionalities (3) The historicaldevelopment of the education of students with exceptionaleducation needs, recognizing the characteristics and causesof the exceptionalities, and the diagnosis and instructionalintervention relevant to the particular exceptionality arepresented. The course is appropriate for educationalpractitioners and community agency personnel. Directapplication of the knowledge of exceptionalities to theclassroom or agency population is expected.SPD 609 Neuropsychology of Exceptional Learners (3)Understanding the unique learning characteristics ofthe exceptional student. Brain research as it relates toexceptionality is studied. Emphasis on learning ability andthe psychological foundation for selected teaching strategiesfor exceptional students.SPD 610 Curriculum Modification in LRE (3) Prerequisites:SPD 151 or 608, 609, 631. Emphasis on the educationalmodifications needed for exceptional learner’s successin the General Education setting and to comply with themandates of the IEPs. Inclusionary practices are studied.SPD 611 Organization and Administration of SpecialEducation (3) Prerequisite: SPD 151 or 608. Introductionto administrative procedures of special services. Emphasison Nebraska and national laws governing special education.
