An emphasis isplaced upon behavioral and humanistic examination ofspecial education practice in culturally responsive settings.This course is approved by the Nebraska Dept. of Ed.for certification purposes.SPD 252 Characteristics and Methods Kindergarten/Elementary (K-6) (3) Prerequisite: SPD 151. Study ofthe methodology facilitating learning of basic academicand psychosocial skills for students with mild/moderatedisabilities from kindergarten through grade six. Studyincludes development of transition to secondaryprogramming and instruction in the least restrictiveenvironment/inclusive setting. An examination of assistivetechnology is also included.SPD 260 Characteristics and Methods: Birth through Age 4 (2)Prerequisite: SPD 151. This course addresses the etiology,affects of the disabilities, assessment and interventions forthe young child. Emphasis is on working with families ofyoung children with disabilities. Writing and implementationof the IFSP is studied. Transition to kindergarten isincluded. Ten clock hours of field experience are requiredwith infants/toddlers who are disabled.SPD 261 Characteristics and Methods: Age 5 through Age 8 (2)Prerequisites: SPD 151, 260 (may be taken concurrently).This course teaches best practices for individualizationof instruction for grades K-3, inclusionary practices, andresponsibilities of the general educator on the IEP team.Transition to middle school is included.SPD 331 Identification and Assessment for IndividualInstruction (3) Prerequisites: SPD 151, 252 and 404.Study of informal and formal identification and assessmentprocedures for exceptional learners consistent with federaland state mandates for IFSP, IEP, ITP, and IPP. Emphasisupon terminology and descriptive statistics for standardizedand non-standardized tests for placement in the leastrestrictive environment. Included is test administration andreport writing for multidisciplinary teams.SPD 353 Characteristics and Methods: Middle/Secondary(7-12) (3) Prerequisites: SPD 151 and 252. Study ofnon-categorical knowledge-base unique to adolescents andyoung-adult-aged exceptional learners with focus upon mildor moderate disabilities. Emphasis upon the methodologyof facilitating the student’s learning in general educationsettings, and transition to post-secondary education. Anintroduction to assistive technology and mastery of learningstrategies are included.SPD 361 Clinical Experience-Special Education (6)Prerequisites: SPD 331, 353, 400, and 430. A culturallyresponsive clinical experience that bridges the professionaleducation and special education knowledge bases withexperiential practice. Emphasis is upon transdisciplinarydelivery of the IEP with consultative assistance providedby an experienced practitioner in a school or agencyeducational setting. Evaluation by letter grade. Studentsmust preregister with the Office of Field Experiences byOctober 15.SPD 400 Management and Decision Making Strategies forSpecial Education (3) Study of legal, procedural, andorganizational structures of special education programs.Emphasis upon teacher management of classrooms withinprogrammatic resources consistent with federal and statemandates (e.g. IDEA 2004, and Rule 51), technology,cultural diversity, as well as emerging trends and practicesin special education. Focus is directed toward consultativeand collaborative approaches for transdisciplinary practice.SPD 402/502 Life Skills and Transition (3) Prerequisites: SPD151 or 608 and SPD 252. Preparation of teacher candidates
