IntroductionInspired by the spirit of the first ever PizzaExpresswhich opened in Soho in 1965, PizzaExpress workedwith the designer Ab Rogers, Italian chefs, a theatredirector, a DJ, a fashion designer, artists to create a newgeneration PizzaExpress, in Richmond.Their mission was not to just serve great pizza, butto help feed great conversations - a philosophy whichis at the heart of their brand.The design brief was to reduce the reverberantsound in the restaurant and create a more relaxed,social and comfortable atmosphere. They wantedmusic and conversation to flourish in parallel. All thisin an atmosphere designed to engage and stimulatethe senses.

SolutionsThe Armstrong Circle Optima Canopywas specified early in the projectas it echoed the shape of the tablesand is similar in shape to the pizzas beingserved. It has been successful in reducingthe reverberation time of sound insidethe booths by 50%.These multi functional canopies reducenoise levels bouncing around the spaceby absorbing sound on both the frontand back of the canopy. Lights andspeakers integrated into the canopyallow diners/customers to adjust theirown personal sound and lighting levels.They can even plug in their own iPod!The Optima canopies were printed in pastelcolours to match the colour schemeof the restaurant.
