We have supported natural-gas storage operations in
countries throughout the world. Following are a few
summaries of recent operations:
Matzen and Schöenkirchen Fields, Austria
Completion Package Enhances Injection and Production
Rates in Central European Gas Storage Wells
Weatherford supplied completion equipment and support
services to OMV on an operation in the Matzen and
Schöenkirchen fields. Specifically, the project entailed
openhole gravel-packing and completion of four newly drilled
wells and re-entry of three old existing wells. Completed in
just two months, the successful operation helped the client
achieve higher injection and production rates, improve well
and pump design, and enhance storage capacity through
better reservoir contact.
Southern California, USA
ESS ® Technology Enables Client to Achieve High Rate of
Sand-Free Production on Multi-Well Gas Storage Project
Izaute Field, Southwestern France
Our innovative ESS expandable sand screen
enabled a client to cycle injected gas and
withdraw at higher rates than conventional
sand-control techniques permit. The ESS
system also eliminated the need to use more
complex openhole gravel packs.
Clarion
Weatherford’s Clarion multi-station, multicomponent
optical, in-well sensing system
was installed in the Izaute gas storage field
in southwestern France in 2002. Since then
the system has enhanced the operator’s
understanding of the reservoir by acquiring
time-lapsed vertical-seismic-profiling (VSP)
imaging of the gas-water contact.
Drawing on an extensive product portfolio
and oilfield services expertise to optimize
natural-gas storage.

Our Natural-Gas Storage Capabilities
Drilling hazard mitigation
Secure Drilling SM services. Our
Secure Drilling services—including
air drilling, managed pressure
drilling (MPD) and underbalanced
drilling (UBD)—present an
alternative to conventional drilling
when nonproductive time, formation
damage and drilling hazards are
of particular concern. In depletedformation
gas storage wells,
Secure Drilling techniques can be
used to mitigate lost circulation and
to help minimize formation damage.
Drilling
Drilling-with-casing/drilling-with-liner systems.
Our DwC and DwL systems remove the need to trip
drillstring and the bottomhole assembly and allow operators
to case or line a well while
drilling, enhancing safety and
efficiency. Designed expressly
for drilling through trouble
zones, Weatherford DwC and
DwL systems are ideally suited
to mitigate the challenges of
drilling in depleted formations.
Solid expandable systems. Our MetalSkin ® solid
expandable systems expand in situ, thereby minimizing
well telescoping. Their key benefits include slimmer tophole
sections, which reduce costs and surface footprint,
and minimized risk of failing to reach total depth, both of
which contribute to an expanded range of economically
drillable wells. Weatherford MetalSkin systems also offer
a cost-effective
means of
isolating trouble
zones in gas
storage wells
in depleted
formations.
Cementing products. A good cement job
is essential to the longevity of gas storage
wells, which typically have projected life
spans of 25 to 30 years. Backed by a track
record that extends across more than
five decades, Weatherford is one of the
oil and gas industry’s leading suppliers of
cementing products.
Inflatable packers. Acting as high-pressure
seals, our inflatable packers enable zonal
isolation, essential to cementing and other
completion and intervention procedures. Gasstorage-related
applications include isolating
lost-circulation zones in depleted formations.
Drilling tools. We offer tools for virtually any drilling,
completion or workover task. Our vast portfolio encompasses
rotating control devices that can help mitigate drilling hazards
in depleted reservoirs, as well as blowout preventers, including
large-bore units appropriate for gas storage wells in salt
caverns. We can also provide support personnel.
Tubular running services. The long, complex well
trajectories often required on gas storage wells in
depleted reservoirs can increase the risk, rig time
and associated costs of an operation. To help mitigate
these challenges, we offer an extensive portfolio
of innovative equipment, including the TorkDrive
Compact tool, designed to maximize the safety and
efficiency of tubular running in gas storage operations.
