The National Audit Office scrutinisespublic spending on behalf ofParliament. The Comptroller andAuditor General, Sir John Bourn, isan Officer of the House of Commons.He is the head of the National AuditOffice, which employs some 800 staff.He, and the National Audit Office, aretotally independent of Government.He certifies the accounts of allGovernment departments and a widerange of other public sector bodies;and he has statutory authority to reportto Parliament on the economy,efficiency and effectiveness withwhich departments and other bodieshave used their resources. Our worksaves the taxpayer millions of poundsevery year. At least £8 for every£1 spent running the Office.
