Participation in <strong>the</strong> International Center‘s orientation program, including a<br />
German crash course, is compulsory for exchange students and students<br />
enrolled in programs taught in English. Among o<strong>the</strong>r things, important<br />
information is provided, and assistance with legal paperwork is given.<br />
3.4 Prior <strong>to</strong> Departure – What <strong>to</strong> Do, What <strong>to</strong> Take<br />
• Passport or identity card - which must be valid for <strong>the</strong> entire length of<br />
your stay in Germany.<br />
• Letter of Admission - sent <strong>to</strong> you by <strong>the</strong> university.<br />
• Proof of financial resources - adequate <strong>to</strong> cover <strong>the</strong> cost of living while<br />
studying in Germany (details below)<br />
• Visa, if required, no <strong>to</strong>urist or language visa! (details below)<br />
3.5 Visa<br />
There are different types of visa.<br />
A student visa is usually valid for a period of three months. It is renewed on<br />
location in Germany after you are enrolled as a student and becomes <strong>the</strong>n a<br />
resident permit which is usually valid for <strong>the</strong> period of your study, but no longer<br />
than 2 years.<br />
A language course visa allows you <strong>to</strong> exclusively study <strong>the</strong> German language.<br />
This type of visa cannot be converted <strong>to</strong> a regular student visa!<br />
A Schengen Visa permits stays of up <strong>to</strong> 90 days in 15 Schengen countries. This<br />
type of visa cannot be converted <strong>to</strong> a regular student visa!<br />
3.5.1 Who should apply for a visa?<br />
EU nationals and those from Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San<br />
Marino, Switzerland, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan,<br />
Israel, Andorra, Honduras and El Salvador do not need a visa.<br />
Students from o<strong>the</strong>r countries have <strong>to</strong> submit an application for a student visa <strong>to</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> respective German embassy or consulate, closest <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> place where <strong>the</strong>y<br />
live. Documents have <strong>to</strong> be presented proving among o<strong>the</strong>r things that <strong>the</strong><br />
applicant has been accepted for studies at <strong>the</strong> university. The German embassy<br />
abroad will <strong>the</strong>n forward <strong>the</strong> visa application for an opinion <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> local<br />
