INTERNATIONAL EXPANSIONKeenly aware of the potential represented by newterritories, the company set up a Branch in London underthe name “Baume Brothers”. It soon expanded throughoutthe British Empire, spanning India, Africa, Australia, NewZealand, Singapore and Burma. By the late 19th century,the company had already acquired a solid internationalreputation and was becoming a noted watchmakingplayer abroad. At the time, the brand was best knownfor its chronographs and its grand complication models,including minute repeaters, calendars and tourbillons.Thanks to its time measuring instruments, the companywon ten Grand Prix awards and seven gold medals atinternational exhibitions and shows in Paris, Melbourne,Zurich, Amsterdam, London and Chicago. As well asbeing beautiful and highly complex, Baume watches alsodemonstrated a rare degree of precision. They set accuracyrecords and won various timekeeping competitions,particularly the precision timing trials held by the KewObservatory near London. CREATIVITY AND FEMININITYPaul Mercier knew that it was essential for the brand tolive in step with its times and to embrace change. Duringthe “Roaring Twenties”, the brand grasped the importanceof women’s emancipation and came to regard their desiresas an unquenchable source of inspiration. In the 1940s,building on this profound understanding of femininity,Baume & Mercier launched one of its most successfulmodels: the Marquise.
