EXPLANATION OF TERMS USED INTHIS GUIDEThe terms, abbreviations ong>andong> legal extractsthat we need to use in this ong>guideong> maysometimes be difficult to understong>andong>. Wehope these explanations will help but, if youare unsure about anything please telephonethe School Admissions Team on 0118 937 2550.Admission AuthorityThe Admission Authority of a schooldetermines the admission policy ong>forong> theschool. The admission authority ong>forong> acommunity school is The Local Authority (LA).The admission authority of academies,voluntary-aided ong>andong> foundation schools is thegoverning body of the individual school.Admission Number (AN)Every school has an Admission Number (AN).The AN is normally based on the number ofclassrooms ong>andong> specialist teaching rooms suchas science laboratories (i.e. the physicalcapacity). Each school is measured accordingto Statutory Guidance Assessing the NetCapacity of Schools 2002. The AN representsthe maximum number of places available inthe year group which pupils normally enter onjoining the school. Places must be offered upto this number. The Admission Number ong>forong>each school is given in the inong>forong>mation onschools later in this ong>guideong>.Any admissions above the AN are onlynormally granted by an Independent AppealPanel or through the ‘Fair Access Protocol’.Categories of schoolsState schools are governed in different waysdepending on the type of school. Thecategory of the school determines theadmission authority. Although the admissionauthority maybe the governing bodyapplications ong>forong> places at these schools mustbe made to the child’s home Local Authorityong>andong> the home Local Authority will make theoffer of places at these schools.Community SchoolsThese schools are maintained fully by the TheLocal Authority (LA). The LA is the AdmissionAuthority ong>andong> is responsible ong>forong> determiningthe admission arrangements ong>andong> allocatingschool places. There are no communitysecondary schools in Reading.Voluntary Aided SchoolsA school set up ong>andong> owned by a voluntarybody, usually a church body. Managementresponsibility is shared with the LA but thechurch or Governing Body play a greater role.The Governing Body is the admissionauthority ong>andong> its admission criteria willnormally be different from those used by theLA. The Governing Body is responsible ong>forong>allocating school places.Foundation SchoolsA type of state school introduced in 1999 bythe School Stong>andong>ards ong>andong> Framework Act1998, which gives the Governing Body morefreedom to manage their school ong>andong> decideon their own admissions policy. The GoverningBody is responsible ong>forong> allocating schoolplaces.AcademiesAcademies are publicly funded independentschools.All academies established by the Secretary ofState enter into a contract – the fundingagreement – with a charitable company, whichis often referred to as the academy trust. Thefunding agreement provides the frameworkwithin which the academy must operate.
