Wellington Institute of TechnologyInnovation and ResearchReport 2009INTRODUCTIONIntroductionWellington Institute of Technology’s (WelTec) core businessis, and will continue to be, providing support for economictransformation at both local and national levels through theprovision of:• Teaching and learning related to employment• Applied research and technology transfer; and• Education services such as Recognition of CurrentCompetency (RCC) and workplace capability development.WelTec’s aim, as an Institute of Technology, is to increaseproductivity of New Zealand businesses. The institutionis committed to continuing to develop to be an “industrypowerhouse”, supporting economic development, with a focuson both the Wellington region and New Zealand as a whole. As an outward-looking institution, WelTec fosters enquiry andscholarship, develops links with its community, and shares itsknowledge and capabilities with industry and the professionswe work with. At the same time, the community, industry andgovernment are looking to WelTec and the rest of the polytechnic(ITP) sector to harness their knowledge and expertise throughthe development and dissemination of research and technology, and to play a greater role in solving problems and creatingopportunities for the people of New Zealand. The government isalso expecting the ITP sector to be more interactive with industryand business and to develop their technology transfer andresearch capacities at all levels.WelTec’s research emphasis, therefore, is on practical andapplied research, technology development and transfer, scholarship, consultancy and professional practice, and thedissemination and application of the knowledge resulting fromthese activities. In fostering these activities, we encouragecollaborative and interdisciplinary approaches that assist in theconcentration of skills, and material and financial resourcesnecessary to further develop the Centres of Excellence thatcharacterise WelTec.As a result of this focus, much of the institution’s researchis sponsored by clients to solve particular problems or topursue specified lines of enquiry. These endeavours, like theconsultancies that often flow from the institution’s broaderresearch programme, are characterised by project funding, defined goals, and accountability to the sponsor or client.Research, innovation and technology development and transferboth underpin the teaching and learning at WelTec and provide ameans of connecting the institute with the Wellington region andits industries. They also ensure that the programmes developedand delivered include the latest developments in their field andthat students graduating from the institution are technologicallyaware, able to communicate ideas and continue to learn, and areable to work effectively in cross disciplinary teams.04WELLINGTON INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY | 2009 RESEARCH REPORT
