(3) Proficiency in <strong>Urdu</strong> Through EnglishObjective of the þCourse:As per the m<strong>and</strong>ate of the Act, it is the responsibility of the University not only to acquaintthe citizens of greater India with <strong>Urdu</strong> Language but also to devise <strong>and</strong> design such courseswhich will bring multilingual <strong>and</strong> multicultural people of this great nation into a compositewhole. Certificate programme Proficiency of <strong>Urdu</strong> through Hindi <strong>and</strong> English is an attemptin this direction.The main objective of these two certificate courses is to acquaint people with <strong>Urdu</strong>language. The courses have been so devised that persons who have basic knowledge ofreading <strong>and</strong> writing English/Hindi language will be able to learn <strong>Urdu</strong>. These courses will beof immense help to such employees for whom the knowledge of <strong>Urdu</strong> is m<strong>and</strong>atory. Thesecourses will also be helpful to those who are closely associated with academic institutionslike libraries, archives, academics <strong>and</strong> museums. It will open up avenues for low skilledtechnicians in film industry, T.V. <strong>and</strong> Radio.Course Content:The course consists of two papers of 100 marks each.Paper - I : Units 1 to 18 (<strong>Urdu</strong> Script, Basic Vocabulary)Paper - II : Units 19 to 28 (Basic Vocabulary, Grammar <strong>and</strong> Specimens ofProse & Poetry)Duration of Course :The duration of the course is six months. But the students, according to their convenience,can complete the course within a maximum period of two years.Admission Criteria :The C<strong>and</strong>idate should be acquainted with English/Hindi <strong>and</strong> should complete 18 years ofage by August of each admission year. There is no eligibility test for admission.Counselling <strong>and</strong> Support Services :Study material will be dispatched to the students by post on confirmation of admission. Nocounselling classes will be conducted. However, guidance will be provided bycorrespondence <strong>and</strong> e-mail. C<strong>and</strong>idate may contact the Course Co-ordinator at Directorateof Distance Education, Head-quarter (Hyderabad) through letters or e-mail to clarify theirdoutbs.Scheme of Examination :Each 100 marks paper shall carry 30 marks for assignments <strong>and</strong> 70 marks for term-endexamination. Two assignments for each paper are compulsory component for finalevaluation. One has to pass separately in assignment <strong>and</strong> term-end examination.Assignment passing marks: 10Term-end Examination Passing Marks : 26Note : The c<strong>and</strong>idate shall submit the application <strong>form</strong> alongwith the D.D. <strong>and</strong> other enclosuresto the concerned Regional Centre.33
