<strong>SLASH</strong> <strong>BUNDLER</strong>CUT-TO-LENGTH SYSTEM HARVESTERS FORWARDERS1490D

NEW OPPORTUNITIES.ENERGY FROM THE WOODS.<strong>SLASH</strong> <strong>BUNDLER</strong>1490DThe John Deere 1490D Slash Bundler collects, compacts, and wraps the slashinto bundles that can then be easily transported.CUT-TO-LENGTHHARVESTERSFORWARDERSResidual, slash, and other by-products of your loggingoperations represent clean and renewable raw material forenergy production. Similar raw material is also producedin connection with cleaning roadsides and power lines.John Deere’s energy wood-harvesting technology enablesyou to collect this valuable biomass and use it for efficient, productive, and environmentally sound energy production— thus gaining a significant competitive edge as a forestentrepreneur.PAGES2–3

The 1490D collects the slash and residual left behind afterharvesting and feeds it into the bundler, which compactsslash into compact logs. The bundling process is continuous, with no restrictions on the length or type of materialbundled. Each bundle contains approximately one MWh of energy, depending on the tree species and the moisture content.Amounts of slash per hectare vary between around 150bundles per hectare in Scandinavia, while tests on heavilybranched species in the UK have recorded around 200bundles per hectare. Productivity can be in excess of 40bundles per hour where the worksite has been preparedcorrectly, and even in unprepared areas the average is 20–30bundles per hour. The compression process is fully automated. The only thingthe operator needs to do is use the boom to lift materialonto the feed table. The bundler incorporates two fixedpresses and one moving press. During compression, thevolume of the material reduces by approximately 80 percent. The compression strength has been optimized for generatingcompact bundles, without crushing the material..The moving press pulls the bundle forward and the machinebundles it firmly so that the string is tightened when thepress detaches. The tying process is automatically adjusted.Parameters, such as length of the log, distance between ties, and compression periods, are configured in the TMC /Timbermatic 900. The computer calculates how many tiesare required in order for the bundle to be able to withstandhandling and transportation. The volume of one bundle isapproximately 0.7 m 3 , depending on the material.PRODUCTIVITY UPTIME LOW DAILY OPERATING COSTS

PRODUCTIVITY. HIGH UPTIME. EASY MAINTE<strong>SLASH</strong> <strong>BUNDLER</strong>1490DThe TMC system governs all functions ofthe machine. The versatile and easy-to-useWindows-based Timbermatic 900 system isoffered as an alternative. The John Deere PowerTech JD6068HTJ diesel engine has good fueleconomy and high torque at low rpm.The cooling system for the engineand the hydraulics remains efficientin all conditions. The cab conforms to safety regulations andprovides excellent visibility in all directions. Thecab boasts efficient air conditioning and soundinsulation. A CD player / radio is provided. Thelarge windows are made from tinted polycarbonatesafety glass, and blinds that provide shade fromsunlight are available as optional equipment. Thesturdy air-cushioned seat has various adjustments. The cab is equipped with halogen/xenon lights anda connection for a mobile telephone. The efficient hydraulics system makesoperating the machine effortless. Thelarge-diameter hydraulic hoses andpipes reduce pressure loss. The highgradefilter system lengthens the lifeof the components. The engine hood is light tolift, allowing for easy andsafe maintenance access.Components that requiredaily or scheduled servicingare easily accessible.Accessories include adiesel heater, for example.PAGES4–5The strong belly pan can beCUT-TO-LENGTH lowered and raised using awinch. Access to all servicepoints located underneath iseasy, fast, and safe. The steepapproach angle improvesground clearance and makesthe machine more suitable forrough terrains. The six-wheeled machine has rigidfront axles. The eight-wheel version isequipped with a balanced-gear bogieunit. The ground clearance is excellent.Access to service points located underneaththe cab is easy, as the cab movesaside hydraulically. Service lights areprovided on the bottom surface of the cab.

NANCE.1490DThe CF5 boom is easy to control andhas soft motions. The long reach andefficient trajectories enable continuousfeed to the bundler. The string used to tie the slash logs is the samenylon or sisal string that is used in agriculture. The tying unit has casings for nine reels. Once areel runs out, the move to the next reel is automatic. The tying starts during compression —the slash log remains compact. The slash log is cut automaticallywith a chain saw. The guide platefeed-control system automaticallycuts back on the feeding actionif there is hard wood in the slashbundle. The operator can adjust the length ofthe slash log (usually between 3.0–3.2 m). The volume of the slash logis therefore approximately 0.7 m 3depending on the material, and oneslash log generates approximatelyone MWh of energy. The frame structure and middle jointhave a strong composition. The resultis a well-balanced unit with a powerfulframe brake. The position of the middlejoint, the slewing angle of ± 42 degrees, and the generous ground clearance givethe machine a small turning radius, agility, and excellent tracking. The balanced-gear bogie unit is sturdy.Strong traction ensures drive even inthe roughest of terrains. Several chainand track options are available.PRODUCTIVITY UPTIME LOW DAILY OPERATING COSTS

<strong>SLASH</strong> <strong>BUNDLER</strong>1490DEASY TRANSPORTATION AND STORAGE.FOR DIFFERENT TYPES OF WOOD, FOR CHANGING CONDITIONS.Thanks to compression and bundling, slash can be transportedout of the forest with normal forwarders or loglorries. The slash logs can be delivered directly to a powerplant or stored temporarily in the forest. The latest communicationtechnology ensures efficient logistics and fastdata transfer.Bundled biomass is easy to process throughout the year. The compact slash logs are not subject to rotting; therefore, they can be stored in the forest or at a power plantin preparation for the peak seasons of energy production. The logs can be dried easily while they are piled up. Asopposed to woodchips, a pile of slash logs will not igniteon its own.John Deere wood energy technology is already used inFinland, Sweden, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Czech Republic, and the U.S. In addition, the method has been successfullytested in Austria, France, Germany, and the UK, amongothers. Tests show that the bundling method is well-suitedfor different species of trees and various operating conditions. The basic 1490D Slash Bundler features the same propertiesthat have made John Deere the preferred supplier offorestry professionals worldwide. The bundling process,as well as the other functions of the machine are controlledvia the Total Machine Control ® (TMC) system. The machineis powered by an efficient John Deere engine with lowemission levels and high torque at low rpm. The comfortable,well-equipped cab provides the operator with excellentvisibility in all directions.PAGES6–7
