Large waterwheeland power transmission gearing survive.HistoryDescribed in the 1840s Mill Valuation book as a flour mill operated by Richard Dowd.It had a 20ft x 10ft waterwheel driving five pairs of French burr stones. The wheelturned at 3½ rpm and was the fifth largest diameter wheel in the county at this time. The premises had a rating of £84.10s.0d - the second highest in the county afterManor Mill, Birr (OFIAR-035-009). Dowd may also have been operating anothernearby flour mill at this time (OFIAR-042-010).Noted in the 1851 Griffith Valuation as belonging to Robert Dowd, along with a miller'shouse and office. It was rated at £150 at that time. This rating is equalled byCharlestown Mill, Clara (OFIAR008-042) and surpassed only by Erry Mill, Clara(OFIAR-008-038). Dowd was also operating the above flour mill at this time as well.Cited as Brosna malt house on 1885 OS map, and as Brosna Maltings on 1909edition. The north baystands six floors high, including basement and attic. The roof is largely missing butthere are vestiges of a half-hip gable at its west end covered with natural slates overcommon rafters and single purlins. The walls are of random rubble, with ashlar eavesand dressed quoins; also vestiges of lime render. Square-headed openings with brickheads and jambs; no cills to windows. Window frames are 4x4-pane metal framesand 2x3 timber casements. Apart from the ground floor, there are no internal floors ormachinery. There are remains of perforated zinc sheeting which probably belonged toa former kiln. The middle bay is four storeys high (including attic) and has similar roof and walldetailing to the north section. Its east gable is inset slightly from those on either sideand its west end projects. Its west gable is abutted by a single-storey rooflesswaterwheel house. Internally, the floors are now missing. At on corner of the groundfloor is a jack-arch ceiling (three arches), probably part of a former kiln. The south bay is similar to the north section. Although very overgrown, it appears to

e largely devoid of openings. A ground floor door and window both have voussoiredstone heads and jambs and the windows have stone cills. There is a chimney on itseast gable.A plaque built into a new boundary wall to a house on the north side of the road pastthe complex reads "Perry's Mill". This was presumably from a gatepost or one of thebuildings in the complex.WaterworksThe mill pond is still discernible a short distance south of the block, albeit largelyinfilled. The masonry sluice gate emplacement at its outlet survives. The head- andtailraces survive as drainage channels.PlantThe waterwheel on the return projecting from the west gable of the middle bay is ofthe high breastshot variety and measures 14ft in diameter by 14ft wide. It is of metalconstruction throughout, with eight spoked arms and 40 curved buckets (allunventilated). Cast on to the rim is "Jacob Clonmel 1855". Apart from its metalsoleplate and some buckets, the wheel survives intact.MachineryThe power transmission machinery is contained within the projecting west gable ofthe middle bay. A cast-iron segment wheel affixed to the mill side of the waterwheelconnects with a bull nut mounted on the outer end of a cast-iron axle. At the otherend of this axle, in side the mill, is a bevelled pitwheel which drives a wallowermounted at the bottom end of the cast-iron upright shaft.Mounted on the axle between the bull nut and pitwheel is a spur gear connected to asmaller pinion. Along the axle on which this pinion is mounted is a large pulley wheeland small external pulley wheel. It is uncertain whether the latter was an externaldrive to the machinery, or an external power take-off driven from the waterwheel. The collapsed remains of other shafts and gears are also visible inside the building.InterestEvaluationRatingArchitectural; Historical; TechnicalThis is one of the largest surviving industrial sites in Co Offaly, albeit in a veryderelict state. The sheer scale of the buildings, historical link with the Perrys, andsurvival of the waterwheel and principal gearing all make it of regional industrialheritage signficance. Subsequently used as a saw mill.HistoryA flour mill and kiln are captioned on the 1838 OS map. The complex is described inthe 1840s Mill Valuation book as comprising two flour mills, both operated by ThomasWoods. One had an 18ft x 2ft 6in waterwheel (with 56 buckets) and the other a 16ft6in x 3ft 9in wheel (with 41 buckets); they turned at 8½ and 9rpm respectively anddrove, between them, three pairs of French burr stones, a shelling stone, elevatorsand flour dressers. The 1851 Griffith Valuation describes the site as comprising ahouse, offices, corn and flour mill, all valued at £45 and still operated by ThomasWoods. The 1885 OS map also captions the flour mill and kiln. According toMacMahon, the mill was converted to a saw mill in 1894. It is sixbayswide and five storeys high. Hipped roof, now missing. Walls of random rubble(still with traces of render), and advanced eaves course. Except for three-centredvoussoired arch to the entrance doorway at the left and right ends of the ground floorfrontage, all openings are square-headed and regularly spaced. The window openingsto the top floor are diminished in height. None retain their frames, all are without cillsand those to the ground and first floors have metal security bars. There is a shallow five-storey, single-bay return to the SW end of the back of thissection. Its ground and first floors contain a vaulted brick arch (part of its apex hascollapsed). This may have been part of the kiln of which no other floors survive.Fragments of perforated clay tile are to be found through the site indicating theformer presence of a kiln. There is a slightly longer return at the other end of the mill's back wall, also a rooflessshell. Abutting the SW gable of that return is a five-storey, two-bay addition (clearwall break) which was originally probably a store. Hipped roof now missing. Wallsdetailed as main block. Structural crack down SW gable. The SE gable of the mill is abutted by a two-storey (+ attic), single-bay building. Roofnow missing but of gabled profile. Walls detailed as main block. No internal floors, fixtures or fittings. Possibly once an office. No floors survive internally.

At the entrance of the premises is the partial shell of a two-bay, single-storey rubblestone building.Waterworks, plant and machineryThe overgrown headrace is still visible above the mill but pond immediately behindthe mill has been infilled. The headrace entered the mill between the two rear returnsvia two shallow segmental arches, one to each former wheel. One pit is 1.8m (6ft)wide and the other is 1.0m (3ft 3in) wide. The wheels probably had a breastshot feed. The tailraces emerge from the front wall of the mill through two segmental arches. Anopen channel, piped under the road, returns the water to the river. No machinerysurvives.InterestEvaluationArchitectural; Historical; SettingThis prominent roadside mill is typical of medium-sized late 18th/early 19th flourmills. Ashlar eaves. The left section on the southelevation is two openings wide and appears to be a later extension as quoinsbelonging to the earlier right-hand section (four openings wide) are visible under thelime render. The walls of the extension are of split random rubble.Openings are square-headed with voussoired stone heads (mostly rendered over). Allthe windows are without cills. Some timber window frames survive. There is an infilled segmental-headed opening from the waterwheel pit towards in thewest end of the building on its south elevation. A dovecot has been affixed to theoutside of the second floor window at this end.The east gable was formerly abutted by a three-storey building, long demolished. Theghost of its pitched roof survives and some tie-in stones up both quoins. In the apexis an attic window (stone head and brick jambs). The west end of the north elevation was formerly abutted by a two-storey building.Again, the ghost of its pitched roof is evident. The stonework along this elevation is ofsplit random rubble (in contrast to the squared stone on the south façade). Towardsthe right-hand end is a segmental-headed opening for the headrace intake.Internally, the ground floor of the west section is flagged. It contains a waterwheel, described below. The upper floors are accessed by timber staircases. The first floor

comprises floorboards over joists resting on timber beams supported on timbercolumns. The floors over the waterwheel are now missing. The roof comprisescommon rafters over single purlins resting on A trusses. The floors and roof of theeast section are similarly detailed.WaterworksImmediately north of the mill is the millpond, now dry, overgrown and partly infilled. There is no trace of the sluice gate on the channel into the mill. An overspill runsunder the return to the grain store. The tailrace and bypass channel emerge as asingle channel at the south side of the yard, between the mill house and weighbridgeoffice. The channel is culverted under the road.PlantAlong the east side of the west section of the mill is an internal breastshot waterwheelmeasuring 4.57m in diameter by 1.98m wide (15ft x 6ft 6in). It is of cast-ironconstruction throughout save for the curved metal wrought-iron buckets andsoleplate. 'Byrne 1883 Dublin' is cast on each segment of the rim. It is in faircondition except for the deteriorating soleplates. The water was controlled by a twosteprack-and-pinion sluice gate.MachineryAt the west end of the ground floor of the west section is a bucket elevator. It wasdriven by a lineshaft from the mill proper and raised the grain to the attic, from whereit was discharged into the grain store. At the west end of the ground floor of the east section is a great spurwheeltransmission to three sets of millstones on the floor above. The gears and shafts areof cast-iron except for the timber upright shaft and cogs to the stone spindles. Thestone nuts were disconnected from the great spurwheel by jack rings. Tentering(adjustment of the gap between the stones) was by means of a screw operatingthrough the axis of each stone spindle. This floor also contains three bucket elevatorsand an inclined metal reel (for flour dressing). The first floor of the east section contains three sets of millstones - a one-pieceshelling stone and two French burrs for grinding (one is 1.37m/ 4ft 6in dia). There arealso the remains of grain cleaning equipment, a reciprocating sieve, elevators and apulley drive off the crown wheel at the top of the upright shaft. The second and third floors are devoid of machinery except for the elevators up tothe attic floor. There is also a lineshaft pulley drive up to the attic floor on the thirdfloor. The attic floor contains the elevator discharges, a pulley drive (formerly to a sieve, now gone), and remains of a sackhoist.
