There it is. Everything needs time, it doesn’t just happen over night.Start with your preferred date of release and work backwards throughwhat needs to be done. Your list will look something like this:1. Release Date: the day your book is for saledelivery2. Shipping: allow at least 2 weeks depending on quantity and form of3. Printing: offset generally takes longer than POD so be sure to ask your printer howlong to allow. Hardcover books take longer than paperback so ask that too. POD usuallyis a 7-10 day process… but some have a proofing period so be sure to research andallow for that.4. Design time: be sure to ask your designer how long it will take, knowing you play apart in the completion of any design since you need to re-proof the text and approve allwork being done. For a complete book, cover design and interior formatted allow 2-5weeks depending on your books specifics.5. Editing: depending on what services of editing you are looking for this could takeanywhere from 3-8 weeks. So the final outlay of time to allow might look like this:Editing: 4 weeksDesign: 3 weeksPrinting: 3 weeksDelivery: 1 weekSo plan at least 3 months out. Publishing Poynters November 1, 2012 Page 11EVALUATE YOUR MEANING OF SUCCESSBy Jeff Rivera, founder of http://www.JeffRivera.comWhen I say you need to build relationships with people, I’m notsuggesting you touch millions of lives and live like a pauper. You canimpact people’s lives and still make a very good living, and it doesn’thave to take forever to do it.But first, you need to redefine what success means to you. If successmeans making a comfortable living to you, then how much does thatmean? If the average American makes $30K annually, is $100K enoughfor you to feel at ease?Establish what being comfortable means to you, then measure your success based onhow your definition translates to your life. Once you have an idea in your head, youneed to start looking for the people you want to build with.Jeff Rivera is the author of Effortless Marketing: How I Sold Thousands of eBooks,Landed an Agent and a Book Deal in Just 10 Minutes a Day. Sign up for her weekly tips at 30DayBooks.comPromoting your book online through social media, blogging, guestpostingand so on is a great way to get exposure and find new readers. However, with the current emphasis being on online promotions, a lotof new authors are overlooking a very powerful way to promote theirbooks off line.Whether you live in a village, a town or a huge city, your localcommunity is going to be one of the most supportive groups of peopleyou can hope for to spread the word about your book and writing. Here are six ways you can utilize the power of local in your book promotions! :- Write for your local paper/ magazine. Editors are thrilled to get pitched

Publishing Poynters November 1, 2012 Page 12relevant, well-written, non-promotional pieces that speak to their readers. While youshouldn’t make the article about you or your book, you can certainly allude to it in thearticle or mention it in the article attribution. Be sure to be familiar with the style andcontent of the publication, find the relevant section for your piece to be included in, andpitch the correct editor by finding their contact information online or in a past issue.- Give talks in your community . Many authors enjoy giving talks to writinggroups. There are also huge (and better) opportunities to find readers by talking atschools, universities, youth groups, companies, and community organizations about thethemes and issues presented in your book. This is as true for fiction as it is for nonfiction– what’s important is that you recognize the non-fiction messages in your fictionbook and understand who can benefit from hearing that message.- Write for your alumni magazine. This tip is not strictly a local one, but thesame principles apply. Your fellow college grads are a supportive group of people whoshare something in common with you. Alumni magazines often have a section for newsand updates, and some even have a ‘book news’ section. Get hold of a copy of yoursand write to the editor pronto!- Leave fliers in your local coffee shop. It’s an old marketing trick that works.Be sure to leave a link to your author website, as well as social media accounts andpurchasing links to draw people online and to make them more likely to follow you in thefuture.- Advertise in your local paper / on online news sites. This tip is borrowedfrom best-selling self-published author Darcy Chan who took out ads on her local onlinenewspaper. This can work better than advertising on sites such as GoodReads andFacebook as the competition for book ads is low, but the interest in reading and“supporting local” can be quite high among newspaper readers.- Add ‘Local’ stickers to your book cover. If your book is available in paperbackand you’re selling at local events or on consignment in shops in your area, stickers thatannounce you as a local will help your book to stand out. It may also be the decidingfactor for someone’s purchase.Split your time promoting online and offline, and you’ll find new readers in new places!>SEND YOUR TIPS to DanPoynter@ParaPublishing.comYour colleagues in publishing would love to know about this newsletter. Why not forward it to them now?
