Theyremain the benchmark to all members in what it takesto manage a non-profit volunteer organisation. I wouldlike to give special thanks to our outgoing TreasurerJohn Hillen who has done a fantastic job over the pastsix years in this position. I also welcome new committeemember, Ray Lampard, in the Public Relations role.Although we have achieved some significant thingsthis year, I believe we still can do much more toimprove our club. In looking forward, change isrequired, and we will be focusing on successionplanning. For this reason we will be holding a ‘ThinkTank’ conference on Tuesday 17th May at 6.30pm atthe club rooms. This conference will address some keyissues that the club needs to confront for a sustainablefuture. All members will be notified and I stronglyencourage you to attend.Membership has climbed once again and as of the endof 2010 stood at 1,232 – well up on recent years. In factit is the highest since 1,322 in 1993.The Club has also expanded its involvement in thecommunity, with two more charities becomingbeneficiaries of our events. The Fremantle HalfMarathon proceeds were donated toDiabetes WA. It is planned thatthe 2011 Mount Helena 40 milerproceeds will be donated to theMt Helena Bush Fire Brigade. In 2010 the Club maintaineda full programme of events, despite 12 retiring orunavailable race directors.Four of our races are stillwithout race directors. If youhave enjoyed running in WAMC racesover the years, or perhaps if you arecarrying an injury keeping you fromcompeting, being a race director is a greatway to keep in touch as well as a rewardingexperience. Experienced race directors andCommittee members are always available toassist first timers. It would be a great shame if someof our runs had to be abandoned for want of racedirectors. (Please also read Jane Elton’s article onpage 11 about mentoring and race directing).Numbers in the Bridges Fun Run, Women’s Classic,Run for Gold, Fremantle Half, Fremantle Fun Runand Rottnest Marathon and Fun Runs were all higherin 2010 than the previous year. However, two SpecialEvents were down significantly in attendance numbersin 2010. The Challenge Fun Run, held just a weekafter the new HBF Run for a Reason and the PerthHalf Marathon, clashing with the Avon Descent weredown by about a quarter. These date issues have beenaddressed in the 2011 Programme, with some otherrace dates changed to fit in with the City to Surf races.Another change to the 2011 programme is there are nolonger any handicap events. This will solve the age-oldarguments of how handicaps are worked out and atwhat time non-members should start. As 80% of entries for our public fun runs, such as theBridges, are now ‘online’, we’ve now extended onlineentry to include membership, club events such asthe Ultra Marathon and Distance Running Seminars, the awards lunch and the 40 miler race. In keepingwith the ease of doing things electronically, from thisissue the newsletter will also be available online. Ifyou haven’t already opted to ‘go paperless’, pleaseconsider doing so.Your active interest in the running of your club iscertainly appreciated by the committee, which meetsthe first Monday of every month. I encourage allmembers to attend the WAMC ‘think tank’ and shareyour views and suggestions on the strengths andweaknesses of the club. If you are unable to attend, please forward any suggestions you have to the office. To judge the changes implemented, I would also like toencourage all members to attend next year’s AGM.I’m looking forward to the challenges ahead and toseeing you during the 2011 season, whether it running, training, helping or race directing.Running regards,Evan Kolbe, WAMC President6 7

Participants can either run, jog orwalk their chosen distance. This will be the last opportunity to run this historiccourse with the Perth waterfront redevelopment dueto commence construction later this year. The start/ finish area will revert back to become part of theSwan River once again. The 2012 event will be on a somewhat differentcourse. This year there is a new start location for both the 5kand 10km events due to the event being restricted tothe pedestrian path immediately adjacent to the riverbank along the South Perth foreshore. This shortenedthe course requiring the start points to be adjustedaccordingly. The course will still run clockwise aroundthe “Bridges” as it did last year. The 5km event startsat 7.30am in the vicinity of the Wesley Boat Shed on theSouth Perth foreshore and does a short loop on thegrass before joining the 10km course. The 10km willstart at 8.00am on the westbound lanes of RiversideDrive just west of Barrack Street and adjacent to thefinish area, heads towards the Causeway, crossing overthe Causeway, around the South Perth foreshore, overthe Narrows Bridge on the Kings Park side, and back tothe Perth Foreshore Reserve, west of Barrack Street andfinishing where the “Wheel of Excellence” once stood.A free ferry is being provided that will leave WestPavilion Barrack Street Jetty at 6.30am and arrive atthe Coode Street Jetty at 6.45am, to enable the 5kmparticipants to get to the start (after parking near thefinish area), in plenty of time on the South Perth side.A second ferry will depart at 7.00am if required. The proceeds from the event are donated toCHANNEL SEVEN’s TELETHON and the total amountdonated over the years is around the $616,000 mark.It is anticipated that 1,800 will enter the 10km eventand 700 will tackle the 5km event, giving a totalnumber of participants around 2500. Ray Boyd is theholder of the 10km best time of 29mins 41secs setin 2000 and has won this event on 16 occasions. Thewomen’s 10km best time of 34mins 16secs was setby Linda Spencer in 2010. 2011 Agm Summaryhow things are done at the clubThe West Australian Marathon Club held its 41 stannual general meeting on Monday 21 st February atthe Clubrooms, Burswood Water Sports Centre. Therewere 34 attendees and the meeting was chaired by2010 WAMC President, Evan Kolbe, who presented hisfirst report as president.Though 12 race directors either retired or wereunavailable in 2010, the club maintained its full raceprogramme. The lack of members willing to becomerace directors is a growing problem. If race directorsaren’t found, then events will have to be dropped fromthe programme. The three club run handicap races(Parlouf Relay remains) were dropped, becoming‘mass start’ races due to falling numbers, the difficultyenforcing the handicap start given to members and inassigning handicaps to non-members on the day.Whilst race attendance number have remainedapproximately the same as for 2009, two SpecialEvents/Public Fun Runs were down by around aquarter this year: The Challenge Fun, a week afterthe new HBF Run for a Reason and the Perth HalfMarathon which clashed with the Avon Descent. Thishas been addressed in the 2011 programme. Figuresfor all club runs and Special Events are available in thefull report.Sponsorship was again mainly tied to the club’s nineSpecial Event fun runs. All these events have a charityreceiving the proceeds, with the Fremantle HalfMarathon now being linked with DiabetesWA.Membership for the year was 1232, the highest since1993, and the club’s website increased exposure forboth Special Events and Club Runs. In keeping withthe growing use of the Internet for race entry, race andmembership information, the Newsletter will also beavailable online from 2011.Evan announced a Think Tank will be held in upcomingmonths to discuss the future direction of the club andencouraged all members to attend.Outgoing treasurer John Hillen presented the financialreport, audited by Downs Accounting. Comparisonwith the previous year was difficult as the previousaudit period was 15 months, rather than 12 months.Next year comparison can be made between two12 month periods. This year the club ran at a loss of $17,168. Thiscan be attributed to the purchase of new timingequipment. As no large purchases are planned in2011 it is expected the club will break even. A furtherdiscrepancy between the figures for 2009 and 2010 isexplained by the Col Junner bequest ($93, 865) whichthe club received in 2009. Office wages also increaseddue to the change from 2 part time staff to one fulltime and a reduced part time employee. One nomination for each Committee position wasreceived at least 24 hours before the meeting, with theexception of the Social Coordinator position. Thesewere duly elected. There were several changes to thecommittee. Financial Controller, John Hillen steppeddown after an extended six years in the position. His place was taken by Gary Carlton and Phil Webbassumed the role of Race Programme Coordinator for2011. One new nominee was elected to the Committee,Ray Lampard in the Public Relations role. All othercommittee members were re-elected to the positionsheld in 2010. Evan Kolbe called for nominations fromthe floor for Social Programme Coordinator, but nonewas forthcoming. There were four nominations for life membership thisyear: Jan Braid, Kate Frost, Madge Pettersson and JimBarnes. Evan read out the nominations which detailedtheir contributions to the club over many years, andvotes for all four were unanimous. No amendments were made to the Constitution, norwere any patrons proposed. Ray Boyd remains theClub’s only patron. Down Accounting was reappointedas Auditor, and it was agreed that membership feesare to remain the same for 2012.Topics raised during general business were questionson why the club dropped the three handicap events(Parlour Relay remains) from the 2011 Programme, the omission of full race results from the Newsletterand the need to recruit and guide new Race Directors. For a copy of the full AGM report and AGM minutes, please contact the WAMC office on 9472 4833.Ever wanted to volunteer at the club but unsure whatto do? Everybody has to start somewhere, and thereare people willing to teach you what to do. Before longyou will be passing on your skills too.If you want to be a race director but don’t feel you havea clue what to do, think about being an assistant racedirector first. As an assistant race director you can learnthe ropes and gain confidence so that you can eventuallytake on the full race director role. Race directors arevery keen to teach you, and have your assistance. This past year has seen several new race directorsat various events, including Paddy Foley at LakeGwelup, Mel Ebstein at Wally Cairns, Allison Ratcliffeat Neil Hawkins, and Kim Ribbink and David Cane atPoint Walter. All found their jobs were made easierby turning to experienced race directors to help themout and teach them the ropes. All have found theexperience rewarding and enjoyable as a result. There are many roles you can learn and help withat the club. Apart from race marshalling and racedirecting, you might like to learn how to be a leadcyclist, prepare catering for social races, run a drinkstation, race registrations, course set up, timing, andthe equipment shed/trailer. People are happy to teachyou what they know. Volunteers are the heartbeat ofthe club and are always in demand. Please stick yourhand up, and help out. You’ll have fun, make newfriends, and contribute to the club that gives us all somany happy running memories! To be matched up with an experienced volunteerplease call Membership Coordinator, Jane Elton on0431 855 373.10 11

cape to cape expedition6 inch trailBy Kate BrooksBy Kate SommervilleOn 21st December, 2010, Summer Solstice - thelongest day of the year, Andrew Cohen and MichaelBaldock set out from the door of the Cape LeeuwinLighthouse to run 130km along the Cape to Cape Trackto the door of the Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse . Thiswas the first attempt at a non-stop, single day runbetween the two lighthouses. The run was the brainchild of Andrew, a three timeparticipant in the Marathon des Sables, (winner, veterans division 2008), who persuaded Michael, member of the Australian teams for the 2009 Worldand Commonwealth 100km championships and WAMCmember, to accompany him.Pretty soon Andrew’s dream turned into his Everest. Along time fundraiser for the Fred Hollows Foundation,Andrew had the vision to use the run to raise money. He set up a website, www.fixedstars.com.au, and sincea website needs photographs, Andrew approachedlocal photographers Michael and Christian Fletcherwho put out a call to fellow photographers to join themfor the day. Andrew organised after-hours access tothe lighthouses with the local tourism associationsallowing special photo opportunities at night. With allthese pictures – why not publish a book? This run wasgetting bigger and bigger! The run began at 4:00am with a full moon andlow tide. Ahead of them was 130km of running, including 60km of soft, steeply angled beaches andAndrew and Michael leave footprints in thesand. Photo: Christian Fletcherthe remaining on dirt or gravel trails. They mainlyfollowed the Cape to Cape Track, with some diversionsto keep photographers happy and meet with crewcars. The day started with drizzle which, though a painfor the photographers, provided some reprieve for therunners before the hot and humid afternoon. Whenthe rain stopped, the flies emerged. When the sun setthere was relief from the heat and the flies made wayfor the mosquitos. The planning for this run was impressive. Andrew had,in the months preceding, driven every road and trackbetween Caves Road and the Cape to Cape Track, estimated run times and then used a spreadsheet toco-ordinate and leap-frog crew and photographersbetween stops. The crew carried a variety of supplies– first aid kit, snake-bite bandages, shoes, clothes, boiled potatoes, bananas, lollies, freeze-dried icecream, coke, tang, icy poles, ice, the usual – the onlyoversight, given the unexpected rain, was enoughdry socks. Dinner was held at Rabbits’ car park inYallingup after sunset with the luxury of folding chairsand a picnic blanket. It’s a pity it consisted of boiledpotatoes, bananas, lollies, freeze-dried ice-cream etc.The run finished 19 hours and 15 minutes later undera full moon with a hill sprint to the lighthouse. This was a run that had it all – four seasons in one day,the coastal scenery, the world’s best surf breaks for aidstops, dolphins, whales, hooded plovers, dugites, eventhe misadventure of snakebite (carpet python). Andrewalso had a friend in Hawaii, who performed a shamanicceremony summoning the spirits to aid their cause. Hepointed out they literally had an alignment of planets –the first full moon lunar eclipse on a Winter Solstice for400 years which was visible in North America. And forthose into numerology 21.12.2010 is a 333 number and avery auspicious “Master of Love” day. There is no doubt that Andrew and Micahel’s physicalpreparation and experience of ultra-running,knowledge of the Cape to Cape Track, military-likeplanning and organisation and their shared attitude ofenjoying and respecting the run prepared them well. But as Andrew says, “now that we know exactly whatrole luck played in our success, we could not startagain and still be declared sane. We were blessed withan unusual alignment of planets that made the runpossible”.Who could think of a better way to end a great year ofrunning than to sign up for the growing phenomenonthat is the 6 inch trail marathon? Many WAMC clubmembers made their way down to the Dwellingupcaravan park for the 4:30am start on SundayDecember 19.The race was held on the Munda Biddi trail, on a 46kmcourse from North Dandalup to Dwellingup in theSouth West of Western Australia, about 80km southof Perth. The Munda Biddi trail is supposed to be thecyclists bibbulmun track: beginning at Mundaringand heading south past Collie and to Nannup (498km)along bush tracks, firebreaks and disused railwayformations – the plan is to make a track all the wayto Albany. So this weekend the runners crashed thebikers trails in fine style. The 6 inch is an AURA race directed by local ultralegends Dave Kennedy and Bernadette Benson. Bothshowed their pedigree by race organising, coursemarking, running and placing in the race. The race hasalso got the gong as a 6 foot track race qualifier andguaranteed entry for the first male and female. The course began in the dark at the base of GoldMine Hill which took 80 runners from the road to thetop of the scarp. The purpose of this start is to anointthe king of the mountain and wake the rest of therunners. 6 inch legend, Trailblazer, ensured he hadevery advantage with his iconic crouch start. Once thetop was reached the course followed the Munda Bidditrail. The course was a mix of fire trail and single trackwith one steep gutted decent. It is mostly runnable. The landscape was inspiring with grass trees dottedamongst granite outcrops, and wildflowers markingthe trails of the jarrah forest. Squawking red-tailedblack cockatoos were the crowd support. There were a few aid stations and a mobile portaloowhenever we needed it. The aid stations had a prettyamazing spread of lollies, coke, sports drink andHammer gels. The other compulsory stop was the“blue couch” where celebrity photographer, Denis, wasstationed. I am not sure how this couch will stand thetest of time, but it’s become a feature of this race. There were a few groups out there turning running intoa team sport - so there was much joviality out there onthe trails and hand holding at the finish. At the front of the pack the men battled it out for aclose finish. For the women Bernadette still had thehome ground advantage and it was great to see WAMCclub member Jodie Oborne nail second place in herfirst ultra.A unique finish medal of a railway nail with a plaquewill bring happy memories for a while. Pilates for RunnersBy Rebecca PagePilates seems to be everywhere you look, with newstudios popping up everywhere. This form of exerciseis also becoming more popular as a therapeuticintervention prescribed by a range of musculoskeletalpractitioners, especially physiotherapists. So how canthis be beneficial to runners like you and me?As you all know, running is a highly repetitive sportwhich places a lot of stress through the lower limbsand also through the spine. While it is a great type ofexercise for an overall cardiovascular workout, it tendsto strengthen some muscles while others are forgottenand become weak. Also regular running withoutstretching can lead to restriction of joint movementwhich can lead to injury.Joseph Pilates in theearly 1900’s developed arange of exercises thathelp to do exactly what arunner can benefit fromand should be awareof to help reduce therisk of injury. Pilateshelps to strengthen thecore muscles deep within the tummy area and thestabilizers through our hips. In order for our lowerlimbs to work efficiently and at their best, we need tohave a strong core to help provide a stable base andadequate support. Pilates also focuses on mobility andflexibility within the spine and limbs which is importantfor runners as we commonly develop stiffness in thelower back, gluteals and legs. The core stabilisers, which we refer to are thetransverse and oblique abdominals, work incombination with our pelvic floor muscles and a deepspinal muscle called multifidus, to act as guide wiresfor our spinal column. Without the adequate controland strength these muscles provide your spine, thespine becomes unstable and causes overloading of thesurrounding tissues. This means you may feel pain orneed to hold on to your knees when bending over to tieyour shoes or when picking something off the ground. The muscles around our hip joints are also veryimportant and responsible for helping to maintainalignment and appropriate biomechanics of the wholelower limb. When these muscles are weak or a muscleimbalance is present, injuries such as patellofemoralpain, plantar fasciitis and ITB syndrome can occur. When tailoring a pilates programme for you as arunner you should focus on the following musclegroups and areas of the body:• Spine – cervical, thoracic and lumbar (yes they allcan be tight!!)• Transverse, oblique and rectus abdominis• Gluteals (including glute max and medias)• Hip flexors• Quadriceps• Hamstrings• Calf musclesThere are three important things you need to beaware of when you are taking part in a pilates classor following a DVD or prescribed exercise programmeat home. These points are important as if you do notfollow these, you will do the exercises incorrectly andrisk causing injury to your spine.1. Engaging your core only 20%.You will hear the instructor say draw you belly buttonto your spine or engage your core. This is remindingyou to activate the transverse abdominal muscles, but you should only be doing so at approximately20% of its maximal contraction. This muscle isdesigned to be used sub-maximally for long periodsto help support the spine. Too much stiffness by overcontracting the muscles will prevent you from doingthe exercise properly.3. Focus on your breathing. This will help you to focus on what you, your neutralspine and your core are doing. Breathe out when youare taking a limb away from your body and breath inwhen you are bringing it back. This will also make surethat you are not bracing your diaphragm, meaning youare just using your core to stabilise your spine. When done properly pilates is a very useful form ofexercise, helping to realign any imbalances, lengthenand strengthen muscles to prevent injury. You must beaware that the exercises need to be done properly togain these benefits. If you are unsure whether you aredoing the exercises correctly, you must seek qualifiedadvice. By doing this you will truly capitalise on thebenefits that pilates was intended for.2. Maintain a neutral spine when doing abdominalexercises. This is where you have a small arch in your lower back, and when lying down you can get your hands to abouthalf way, but not all the way through to the other side. This position should not change when you are movingother parts of your body. If it is, your core is not strongenough to complete this exercise safely. Try slowingdown or an easier option of the exercise.Rebecca PagePhysiotherapist at Bodysmart Health CentreBHSc Phty16 17

Faster andslower runners are paired based on their most recent10km time, with the aim of creating an even racewhere anyone can win! This element of the race, aswell as it being run on Boxing Day, gives the race agreat camaraderie and festive atmosphere. But don’tunderestimate how challenging it is! The weatheris usually warm, the course is a 900m lap, and thecompetition is pretty serious! The race on Boxing Day 2010 was hotly (30 degrees)contested with some great runners of all eras turningout for the day. Lap scorers were kept busy with22 pairs of relay runners tearing around Hyde Park for30 minutes, taking it in turns to dodge the ducks andfellow runners. The winning pair, Michael Fisher and David Cane, completed a staggering 9 laps and 302m. No one wasmore surprised than David who had turned up in hiscivvies to marshal the event, but at the last minuteit was discovered the field had odd numbers and avolunteer needed to run! RACE RESULTSRACE RESULTS2010 WAMC NEW YEAR’S EVE RUNRace Director’s Report – By Peter GroseWhen I drove down my driveway after the race at10 PM, I was greeted by 3 and 7km WAMC signs ona star picket in the garden. As I’d only drunk twomidstrength beers all night, my first thoughts were,no, I wasn’t seeing things, and who’s the smart-arsethat put them there as a reminder that I neglectedto put them on the back of the 1km marker on thecourse? A known practical joking mate from the HashHouse Harriers who was at the run immediatelysprang to mind. Actually this was the first year thatI’ve put up the 1km and 6km signs – previously withthe old courses I only put up a 2km sign. It would benice to put up 3km and 5km signs for the 8km coursetoo, but the spot is hard to access by car. My dreamwould be to have a quad bike with a trailer to useon the dual use paths to do all the setup, and moreimportantly the take-down, when it’s a real pain to getout of the Burswood complex and back in after therace, with all of the car parks full, cars illegally parkedeverywhere on the verges and roundabouts, andhundreds of punters cruising around in vain attemptsto find parking spaces. John Pettersson as usual dida sterling job of keeping such punters out of the Clubgrounds. I believe that the Casino was set up underan act of parliament that exempts it from regulationsthat others have to follow, and that it has been able tosignificantly expand its facilities to take in more andmore patrons, without a commensurate increase incar parking spaces. I reckon that parking at Burswoodis an absolute disgrace, and that additional carparking should be provided, preferably by turningsome of the existing car parks into multi-storeyones, rather than gobbling up more of the parklands.Anyway, the mystery was solved and my conspiracytheory went out the window when I told a runningmate David Bryant about it a couple of days later on atraining run, and he explained that he’d put the signthere, having found it still up from the City Beach Runa few weeks before. He had thought I’d find them onNew Year’s Eve before I went to the run, and returnthem to the club, but on this occasion I’d gone straightto the Club from work. What an incredible coincidence.Anyway, I’ll try to remember to put them on the backof the 1km sign in 2012!We changed the courses this year, to separate the4km and 8km events, by routing the former overGoongoonup Bridge as usual and the latter overWindan Bridge instead, to avoid last year’s clashof the faster returning 4km runners with slowerrunners still heading out. From all reports thechanges were well received.Temperature at the 6.30 PM start was 26.9 ºC, higherthan last year’s 20.7ºC, but lower than 2008’s 30.8º,and the turnout was 305, compared to the previoustwo year’s 321 and 202.The wind was a south-south-westerly blowing in therange of 11 to 30 km/h over the period of the race, compared to 19 to 33 from the same direction last year.As both courses were slightly different, everyone bydefinition set a PB for the course. Bob Braid kindlymarked out the new 8km course with great precision, with the half way turn being about 100m closer to theClub due to the extra distance involved in running overWindan Bridge. The 4km did not require remarking, the only change being the runners heading northrather than south when approaching the water havingcome off the bridge, and turning at the 2km mark oflast year’s 8km route. The first three men in the 4km were MartinFeichtinger 13:10, Daniel Rubick 13:30, and StephenStingemore in 13.49. Among the women, SandraVoesenek was first in 15:15, Katherine Stockwellsecond in 15.52, and Amanda Walker third in 16.29.Both Martin and Sandra beat the previous fastest NYE4km times of 13.15 and 15.20 respectively.Among the 8km competitors, the top three men wereRoberto Busi, 25.50, Cody Angell, 26.33 and ChrisLamperski 26.46. The top three women were GeorgiaWood, 30.20, Rachel Smith 32.30 and Emma Gillard,34.07. Again, both Roberto and Georgia beat previous8km times at the NYE run of 25.52 and 31.53 respectively.Roberto, having told me before the race that hewas out of form, and not expecting to place, beathis last year’s time, which was a course record, bytwo seconds! As he was unable to remain for thepresentations, Cody did an impersonation of one ofRoberto’s acceptance speeches to entertain us duringthe presentation ceremony, in which Club PresidentEvan Colby handed out the medals.Once again race sponsor Mizuno kindly provided acouple of pairs of running shoes through Runner’sWorld, and again Bob Braid drew out the winners, byrandom draw of finishing place numbers. Unbelievablya gremlin got into the system yet again, and theengraving for the 8km medals shows 7.5km, whichwas the distance of the old course, last run 5 yearsago. However, I’ve inspected the medal list sent to theprinters for next year’s run, and it definitely shows 8km.This was the first year that I’ve had to manage thecatering, and I was determined not to have a repeat oflast year, where the race numbers more than doubledcompared to the prior year, and many of us missedout on much of the food. I went through data fromprevious years from Rob Pilsneniks, Ian Roberts andthe Hendersons, and came up with my best estimates, emerging from Woolies at noon on race day with threeshopping trolleys loaded to the gunwales with food, inaddition to the punch ingredients. My estimates endedup pretty close, though we had some snags, buns andlamingtons over, and my punch estimate was low by athird, though fortunately there were other stocks at theClub that we could use. Many thanks to all of the helpers, both those whosigned up beforehand and those who joined in on theday, who are far too many to mention individually.Despite some of our regulars again being away onholidays, helper numbers were great, which onceagain made it a real pleasure to direct this race.Madge Pettersson and John (JP) Pettersson relax at the club after the 2010 New Year’s Eve run. RACE RESULTSRACE RESULTSWAMC POINT WALTER RUN – 13th February, 2011By Kim Ribbink, Race DirectorHeat and wind were no deterrent for the 280 plusrunners who turned up on 13th February for the PointWalter 5km and 16km.A total of 112 runners finished the 5km event and168 completed the 16km. The flatness of the coursemakes this a very popular race with many of our fasterrunners. This year was no exception. The 5km was won by Martin Feichtinger in a time of16.37 with Ian Thomspon in second place in 16.43 andDaniel Rubick in third in 16.54. Among the women,Mathilda Connell led the field in 19.23, with RachelWest hot on her heels in 19.26. The ever-consistentAmanda Walker took third place 20.03.The 16km brought out some big guns, with EthanHeywood winning in 54.02. While it’s not a record forthe event, it’s an incredible time in particularly windyconditions. Not far behind was another talented youngrunner, Chris Dale, in 54.24. One of our club’s besteverrunners Todd Ingraham took third spot in 54.46.The help on the day was phenomenal – all credit toeveryone who came out and leant a hand. The initiativeshown by helpers and the positive attitude from everyperson who got up early to help us out was verypleasing. A special thanks to Mike Kelly, who broughtthe trailer out and helped set up (something Mike’sbeen doing at almost every race), Gary Carlton, whoonce again came to the rescue and helped out whenwe were stuck for a traffic controller, and to SimonCoates, who yet again came out to help us, kept thingsorganised and did a phenomenal job getting the raceunder way, commentated on the run and presentingmedals at the end. Thanks also to Stephen Mundell who went out onthe course to take some phenomenal photographs. There’s a lot of hidden talent in our club!WAMC POINT WALTER RUN RESULTS5 km MalePlace Time Name Age Cat Place Member No. Av km Rate1 16:37 FEICHTINGER, Martin M25 1 N 3:192 16:43 THOMPSON, Ian M35 1 7874 3:213 16:54 RUBICK, Daniel M50 1 9448 3:234 17:41 WARD, Simon M40 1 9102 3:325 17:56 MAY, Samuel M20 1 7115 3:356 18:01 ELWELL, Matthew MU16 1 8640 3:367 18:06 NEWMAN, Kyle MU16 2 9432 3:3710 19:31 JOHNSON, Kevin M50 2 7000 3:5411 19:37 CATTRALL, Robert M50 3 4793 3:5512 19:39 MAHER, Christopher M55 1 1289 3:565 km FemalePlace Time Name Age Cat Place Member No. Av km Rate8 19:23 CONNELL, Mathilda FU16 1 N 3:539 19:26 WEST, Rachel F35 1 5666 3:5318 20:03 WALKER, Amanda F45 1 8663 4:0121 20:53 STANDING, Annabelle FU16 2 N 4:1125 21:13 TWINE, Holly FU16 3 N 4:1526 21:13 LEONARD, Fiona F40 1 5315 4:1527 21:19 FOLLAND, Rolenda F40 2 9115 4:1629 21:42 HARRIS, Katrina F20 1 N 4:2030 21:55 CAMERON, Evanya F35 2 9433 4:2331 22:06 MOSDELL, Gail F45 2 9570 4:2516 km MalePlace Time Name Age Cat Place Member No. Av km Rate1 54:02 HEYWOOD, Ethan M16 1 N 3:232 54:24 DALE, Chris M16 2 N 3:243 54:46 INGRAHAM, Todd M35 1 6173 3:254 56:17 BAKOWSKI, Thomas M30 1 9505 3:315 56:23 THOMSON, Scott M25 1 8927 3:316 56:23 FUERY, Liam M30 2 7577 3:317 1:00:24 CROOKES, Stephen M30 3 8776 3:468 1:02:14 STAHL, Tony M40 1 5365 3:539 1:02:26 MARTIN, Ryan M25 2 N 3:5410 1:02:51 SPIGA, Pablo M30 4 9091 3:5616 km FemalePlace Time Name Age Cat Place Member No. Av km Rate32 1:07:12 CROWE, Sandy F25 1 9537 4:1235 1:08:13 ANDERSON, Carrie F45 1 8722 4:1641 1:08:46 VAN BLOMESTEIN, Eulalia F40 1 8215 4:1844 1:09:16 GILLARD, Emma F40 2 7798 4:2049 1:09:56 MCWHAE, Georgina F40 3 6206 4:2255 1:10:42 TIBBITS, Jenni F25 2 6721 4:2562 1:12:19 HOLMES, Nicola F25 3 9361 4:3164 1:12:26 ALDRICH, Karyn F40 4 N 4:3271 1:13:10 TEASDALE, Hannah F30 1 9704 4:3472 1:13:11 EATON, Allyson F30 2 N 4:3434 35

RACE RESULTSRACE RESULTSWAMC JOHN FORREST RUN – 20th February, 2011Report by Mark Faithfull, Race DirectorThe 28th John Forrest run was held in good runningconditions, even though it was quite windy. Thenumber of runners (134) was very satisfying; a record,I believe. But it very nearly didn’t happen. When I rang a parkranger the Monday before the race he doubted thatI’d be able to conduct the race because of the fire lastNovember that had burnt a lot of the forest north ofthe old railway track and they had closed that part ofthe Park. On Wednesday the head ranger rang to saythat there’d be no race!I had ridden over the affected area and thought thatit was safe. After some discussion he said he wouldconsult his chief ranger, and ring me back. He hadnot been given a copy of the permit. In the meantimeI rang Eldon in the office who confirmed that we notonly had a permit, but it was dated 10 Dec – after thefire. I started planning a change in the course – just incase... Fortunately an hour later the ranger rang andsaid ‘ok, the race is on’.Many thanks to the 11 helpers – Alan Day who’s helpedme at just about every race and who always rings me– and to Mike Adams, Leonie Bingley, Paul Besant,Ben Charles, Clayton Erwin, Simon Di Rosso, SeanKonig, Catherine McMaster, and Les Ormsby whom Iwas able to recruit at the start, and my wife Sue, whooperated both timers. Your help is greatly appreciatedand made the run possible! And brickbats to those who put their names on thehelpers list, and then, without informing the racedirector, decided to do something else on that day.A call would be appreciated. An apology goes out to the front runner in the 6kmevent, who was unfortunately misdirected by amarshal, and was very likely deprived of first place.Next year I will mark the course so that there willbe markers on the road as well as the gravel trackleading from the road to the finish. This will also assistany late starters, and then make marshalls on thecourse redundant!Oh yes, I almost forgot to say that I ran the 12kmcourse on the Friday before the race, as I believe everygood race director should – if necessary in stages ifthe distance is beyond his/her capacity!John Forrest run race courseWAMC JOHN FORREST RUN RESULTS6 km MalePlace Time Name Age Cat Place Member No. Av km Rate3 24:48 FISHER, Michael MU16 1 9409 4:084 25:23 GROSE, Peter M60 1 6680 4:145 25:34 DACRE, Ken M55 1 4521 4:168 27:36 HOGG, Shannon M35 1 9549 4:369 27:37 WOOD, Barry M30 1 N 4:3613 28:39 TOPLIS, Stuart M45 1 N 4:4614 29:39 SPENCE, Caleb MU16 2 9607 4:5617 30:43 STEPHENS, Claudia N 5:076 km FemalePlace Time Name Age Cat Place Member No. Av km Rate1 23:43 CONNELL, Mathilda FU16 1 N 3:572 24:43 O’BRIEN-SMITH, Moira F16 1 8703 4:076 25:43 POST, Erin F25 1 7570 4:177 27:31 ARCHER, Sienna FU16 2 N 4:3510 28:24 SMITH, Georgie F25 2 N 4:4411 28:33 KOSTETSKAYA, Olga F50 1 N 4:4612 28:37 STANDING, Annabelle FU16 3 N 4:4615 30:28 STEPHENS, Madeleine FU16 4 N 5:0516 30:29 MCGANN, Erin F16 2 N 5:0518 30:55 TOHER, Kate FU16 5 N 5:0912.6 km MalePlace Time Name Age Cat Place Member No. Av km Rate1 46:44 INGRAHAM, Todd M35 1 6173 3:432 48:13 SCANLAN, Bill M30 1 9725 3:503 48:35 GEE, Michael M30 2 N 3:514 48:42 CROOKES, Stephen M30 3 8776 3:525 48:54 LEE, Mark M30 4 9521 3:536 49:00 STOCKWELL, Stephen M45 1 5284 3:537 49:28 CARPENTER, Tim M30 5 9138 3:568 49:38 PLAIN, Kris M25 1 9227 3:569 52:50 WU, Shao M35 2 9727 4:1210 53:05 EATON, Luke M30 6 9527 4:1312.6 km FemalePlace Time Name Age Cat Place Member No. Av km Rate23 59:03 GLASS, Leah F25 1 N 4:4125 59:14 WEST, Rachel F35 1 5666 4:4227 1:00:57 CROWE, Sandy F25 2 9537 4:5033 1:02:12 SAUNDERS, Julie F25 3 9504 4:5638 1:03:31 ROWE, Lisa F30 1 8933 5:0248 1:06:57 HOLLAND, Teresa F35 2 N 5:1951 1:08:23 LE PAGE, Maria F50 1 9641 5:2654 1:09:56 GALATI, Lynne F40 1 9703 5:3357 1:10:54 TREEN, Noelene F50 2 8013 5:3860 1:11:43 FISHER, Hermie F40 2 9408 5:4236 37
