14,500 pallets at -25 °CWith increasing global demand for saltwater fishes, suppliersare taking special measures to provide high-quality fresh seafish across the world at any time. For the new public cold storageat Pacific Cold Storage Co. Ltd (PCS), one of Thailand’s leadingrental cold storage service businesses, SSI Schaefer has implementeda Mobile Racking System for more than 14,500 palletlocations at -25 °C.When the cold storage company began planning a new coldstore and central distribution centre in Samutsakorn, Thailand, itidentified the following requirements: respond flexibly to changingdemand, optimise logistics structures, improve internal processesand generate cost savings. The company based the solution ona carefully chosen, modular system, ideal for a cold storage anddeep-freeze warehouse.They begun implementing the project in line with the requirements,with SSI Schaefer working closely with the PCS projectteam – as they did on a previous project – right from the start.This meant that proposals from the customer and SSI Schaeferwere incorporated at an early stage to ensure the optimal designwas created and take into full account the building structure.A carefully designed system optimisation, with 42 m-long mobilecarriages with night-parking option, as well as aisle lighting,now ensure exceptionally efficient and safe processes. PocketPC‘s connected to a wireless LAN operate picking and retrievalwithin the Mobile Pallet Racking System. The new warehouse is40 m wide, 138 m long, and equipped with four modular MobileRacking Systems in three sectors covering 5,520 m 2 in total, providing14,500 pallet positions (approx. 13,000 tons) at -25 °C.This mobile racking concept not only doubles the storage capacitycompared to a static warehouse system, it also allows thecompany to differentiate itself in a competitive market. Thanks toaisle lighting, night parking and compact storage, electricity costsin the cold room were drastically reduced. Goods are easy to findthanks to direct access to all pallet positions, while pallets can bemoved extremely quickly – 100 per hour.„The system has accelerated the material flow considerably,”concludes Mr Jitchai. „The clear organisation of the storage andpicking zones has streamlined order processing and compilation.Also, the error quota has dropped to virtually zero. And it’s notjust the warehouse that’s more efficient – employee productivityhas also increased considerably. We are now ideally equipped forthe future.”
