EvansScholarsThe Evans Scholars Foundation administersthe nation’s largest privately funded collegescholarship program, providing full tuitionand housing grants to deserving caddies.Since the fi rst two Scholars enrolled atNorthwestern University in 1930, 8,205young men and women have graduatedfrom the program. This year, 840 Scholarsare enrolled. Their tuition and housinggrants are renewable for up to four years,representing an average value of $50,000.His Goal!The Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship programwas established by and named for Charles“Chick” Evans Jr., who won 54 tournaments overa competitive career that spanned four decades.He received worldwide fame in 1916 when hewon both the U.S. Amateur and the U.S. Open.When he decided to retain his amateur status,he used his golf earnings to establish the CharlesEvans Jr. Trust in 1928 to assist golf caddies. The<strong>Western</strong> <strong>Golf</strong> <strong>Association</strong> became the program’ssponsor in 1930. The Evans Scholarships areadministered through the Evans Scholars Foundation,a charitable trust. What is the Evans Scholars Program?A. Who is eligible to apply for the Scholarship?A. To be eligible for a Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship, allcandidates must meet the following four requirements:strong caddie record, excellent academics, demonstratedfi nancial need, and outstanding character.1. Applicants must have caddied, successfully andregularly, for a minimum of two years and are alsoexpected to caddie and/or work at their sponsoringclub during the summer when they apply for thescholarship.2. Applicants must have completed their junior year of highschool with above a B average in college preparatorycourses and are required to take the ACT.Meet an Evans ScholarRobert Smith began caddying when he was 14. “I waslooking to earn some money during the summer, andI could easily ride my bike to Scioto Country Club(Columbus, Ohio) to caddie,” he said. His caddiemaster introduced him to the Evans Scholarships,and a <strong>Western</strong> <strong>Golf</strong> <strong>Association</strong> Director helpedprovide him with the direction he needed to applyfor the scholarship.Robert’s quest for a quality education started long beforehe became a caddie. “I’ve always enjoyed schooland learning,” he said. “My parents also instilled in mea very strong work ethic that kept me coming back to3. Applicants must be outstanding in character, integrity andleadership.Those who satisfy the above requirements compete for thelimited number of Chick Evans Caddie Scholarships awardedannually.Q. Which university may Evans Scholars attend?A. Evans Scholarships are awarded to the universities listedbelow, depending on the state in which the candidate resides.Evans Scholars are required to live on the campus.
