Dear Families,Welcome to <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Highland</strong> <strong>Preparatory</strong> <strong>School</strong>’s Twenty-Fourth Annual Summer Spectacular. During Juneand July, we will again offer unique and unsurpassed enrichment opportunities in academics, the arts, and athletics forstudents entering pre-kindergarten through grade twelve.Upper <strong>School</strong> students may elect to join two- or three-week on-campus credit courses. In addition to the everpopularAdvanced Composition, Humanities, Speech, and Personal Fitness, we have expanded our traditional on-campuscourses as well as online options.The interest generated by the authentic research opportunities of Marine and Coastal Science and Robotics andEngineering has prompted the development of an additional science semester-credit course, Medicine and BiotechnologyResearch. Within each of these three courses, students work closely with faculty and mentors in the research,experimentation, and presentation of a comprehensive project for a science fair or symposium.Within the social sciences, new classes include The Cultural History of Sports, Sports Psychology, and East AsianStudies Honors. In The Cultural History of Sports, students will discover the role of culture, society, and history in thedevelopment and evolution of competitive sports. Sports Psychology explores the mental components of athletics andtheir application to everyday challenges with the goal of improving academic performance. East Asian Studies presentsthe impact of geography and politics on the arts and economy of East Asian countries and will serve as a central themefor student-driven research.Online courses, Advanced Composition and Introduction to Computer Programming, will be joined by PersonalFinance Skills for the Game of Life. Spanning six weeks, students will learn about important decisions that will impacttheir future financial health. Within any of these classes, the experience of online learning will encourage students tofully employ their management skills while expanding their knowledge and understanding within content areas.Middle <strong>School</strong> students may participate in Speech, a required semester class that fulfills the Upper <strong>School</strong>requirement. Immersion in research, persuasive writing, and public speaking will actively engage students in experiencescritical for success in school and future professional endeavors. Additional enrichment topics are also available.Continuity of learning experiences ensures students maximize their academic growth and potential. Lower<strong>School</strong> students may select from a vast array of weekly topics designed to expand their knowledge and understandingswithin content areas through high-interest, engaging activities. Whether learning more about next year’s expectations,enhancing math performance or reading strategies, discovering scientific facts or conducting experiments like a scientist,students flourish academically while fostering their lifelong love of learning. Appreciation of the visual arts will grow asstudents refine their techniques within a variety of media. Fun and fitness opportunities will be available throughout thesummer.If you are looking for a comprehensive, multi-week option, consider our First Annual <strong>Highland</strong> SummerExperience. Students will participate daily in four 90-minute classes of their choice. Options include sports, strategygames, summer reading, summer math, and crafts. Lunch from the Tartan Café, morning care, and afternoon care areincluded.The opportunities are endless, and we encourage you to carefully review all that Summer Spectacular has to offer.This brochure is organized for easy viewing.
