Medicine and Biotechnology Research 0.5 credit (entering 9th grade)Course #3027010This course provides students with the opportunity to learn about techniques used in modern biomedical, biotechnologicaland microbial research. Students will learn fundamental information in biochemistry, molecular genetics and microbiology.Instruction will emphasize laboratory techniques such PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA sequencing and microbiological techniquessuch as microscopy, staining preparation and sterile technique. Students will learn how these tools and techniques can be appliedto modern medical, environmental, and biological research questions. Students will have the opportunity to design independentresearch projects under the guidance of qualified instructors. Project topics may include topics such as hematology counttechnique comparisons, screening agricultural produce for genetic modification, using biotechnological tools to look for bacterialcontaminants in lakes and streams, evaluating bacteria for genetic resistance, and much, much more! At the conclusion of thecourse, all participants will have completed a thorough research project (individual or team) which can be used at Science Fair and/or Symposiums.Session I (S1515320): Tuesday, June 9th–26th 8:00 – 2:00 $1200Speech 0.5 credit (entering 9th–12th grade)Course #1007300Speech is a semester-long class dedicated to the development of public speaking and presentation skills. The students will learnabout the processes of communication including both verbal and non-verbal communication. Informative, persuasive, andargumentative speeches, among others, will give students experience with various forms of speaking and will hone advancedspeaking and delivery skills. Students will also learn strategies for practical, real-world speaking scenarios, such as job interviews,banquet speeches, and conversations with adults. The objective of this course is to develop speaking and delivery skills thatstudents will use throughout Upper <strong>School</strong>, college, and beyond.Session I (S1515307): Tuesday, June 9th–26th 8:00 – 2:00 $810Personal Fitness 0.5 credit (entering 9th–12th grade)Course #1501300This course will provide students with the opportunities to develop an individual optimum level of fitness. The content will includephysical fitness concepts, the significance of lifestyle in one’s health and fitness, assessment of the health-related components ofphysical fitness, health problems associated with inadequate fitness levels, stress management, sound nutritional practice, andconsumer issues related to physical fitness. The students will swim, run, lift weights, and complete class work daily, so severalchanges of clothing, running shoes, swimsuit, and pen and paper are required.
