Middle <strong>School</strong> Math Sense (entering 7th–8th grade)Designed for Middle <strong>School</strong> students who want to gain a mathematics advantage while expanding their understanding of concepts,this course covers the basics from number sense and operational skills to more complex concepts such as interpretive analysis,deductive logic, and inference skills. Students will receive one-on-one and small group assistance completing topics through anon-line math program. Math activities are incorporated throughout as students receive meta-cognitive learning strategies for prealgebraicand geometric problem solving.Teacher: Chris Elliott1AB (S1513228): June 8th –12th 9:00–3:30 $3402AB (S1523228): June 15th –19th 9:00–3:30 $340Lincoln-Douglas Novice Debate Camp (entering 8th – 9th grade)This class is for students who have joined or are planning to join the Lincoln-Douglas Debate team and are not planning to attenda national debate camp this summer. Intense weeklong instruction will prepare students for immediate competitive success as LDdebate novices in the 2015-2016 Season. Students will be guided through the same process that the Upper <strong>School</strong> Lincoln-Douglasteam utilizes to prepare for competition. Through the process, they will learn the basic skills of argumentation, how to research,how to construct cases, how to prepare rebuttal arguments, how to make use of cross-examination time, and how to weigh and winarguments. In addition, students will be introduced to some of the main philosophical arguments that are utilized in LD debate.Prior to this week, students will select a camp topic and complete background readings and assignments. They will also set up aDrop Box account and are expected to bring a laptop computer with Microsoft Word capability, pens (both black and red), and atimer or stop watch. <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Highland</strong> has one of the most competitive speech and debate teams in the United States and has boastedone of the top ten LD debate programs for over a decade.Teacher: George Clemens2AB (S1523330): June 15th–19th 9:00–3:30 $3809th Grade Study Skills (entering 9th grade)This course will prepare incoming ninth graders for the academic challenges of Upper <strong>School</strong> and help ensure a successfultransition. Students will discuss and practice effective note taking skills, organization strategies, test taking strategies, and timemanagement skills. Within a small group setting, students will be mentored in their understanding and application of these skillswhile building independence and self-reliance.
