Middle School Math Sense (entering 7th–8th grade)Designed for Middle School students who want to gain a mathematics advantage while expanding their understanding of concepts,this course covers the basics from number sense and operational skills to more complex concepts such as interpretive analysis,deductive logic, and inference skills. Students will receive one-on-one and small group assistance completing topics through anon-line math program. Intense weeklong instruction will prepare students for immediate competitive success as LDdebate novices in the 2015-2016 Season. Students will be guided through the same process that the Upper School Lincoln-Douglasteam utilizes to prepare for competition. Through the process, they will learn the basic skills of argumentation, how to research,how to construct cases, how to prepare rebuttal arguments, how to make use of cross-examination time, and how to weigh and winarguments. In addition, students will be introduced to some of the main philosophical arguments that are utilized in LD debate.Prior to this week, students will select a camp topic and complete background readings and assignments. They will also set up aDrop Box account and are expected to bring a laptop computer with Microsoft Word capability, pens (both black and red), and atimer or stop watch. Students will discuss and practice effective note taking skills, organization strategies, test taking strategies, and timemanagement skills. Within a small group setting, students will be mentored in their understanding and application of these skillswhile building independence and self-reliance.
