Dear Families,Welcome to <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Highland</strong> <strong>Preparatory</strong> <strong>School</strong>’s Twenty-Fourth Annual Summer Spectacular. During Juneand July, we will again offer unique and unsurpassed enrichment opportunities in academics, the arts, and athletics forstudents entering pre-kindergarten through grade twelve.Upper <strong>School</strong> students may elect to join two- or three-week on-campus credit courses. In addition to the everpopularAdvanced Composition, Humanities, Speech, and Personal Fitness, we have expanded our traditional on-campuscourses as well as online options.The interest generated by the authentic research opportunities of Marine and Coastal Science and Robotics andEngineering has prompted the development of an additional science semester-credit course, Medicine and BiotechnologyResearch. Within each of these three courses, students work closely with faculty and mentors in the research,experimentation, and presentation of a comprehensive project for a science fair or symposium.Within the social sciences, new classes include The Cultural History of Sports, Sports Psychology, and East AsianStudies Honors. In The Cultural History of Sports, students will discover the role of culture, society, and history in thedevelopment and evolution of competitive sports. Sports Psychology explores the mental components of athletics andtheir application to everyday challenges with the goal of improving academic performance. East Asian Studies presentsthe impact of geography and politics on the arts and economy of East Asian countries and will serve as a central themefor student-driven research.Online courses, Advanced Composition and Introduction to Computer Programming, will be joined by PersonalFinance Skills for the Game of Life. Spanning six weeks, students will learn about important decisions that will impacttheir future financial health. Within any of these classes, the experience of online learning will encourage students tofully employ their management skills while expanding their knowledge and understanding within content areas.Middle <strong>School</strong> students may participate in Speech, a required semester class that fulfills the Upper <strong>School</strong>requirement. Immersion in research, persuasive writing, and public speaking will actively engage students in experiencescritical for success in school and future professional endeavors. Additional enrichment topics are also available.Continuity of learning experiences ensures students maximize their academic growth and potential. Lower<strong>School</strong> students may select from a vast array of weekly topics designed to expand their knowledge and understandingswithin content areas through high-interest, engaging activities. Whether learning more about next year’s expectations,enhancing math performance or reading strategies, discovering scientific facts or conducting experiments like a scientist,students flourish academically while fostering their lifelong love of learning. Appreciation of the visual arts will grow asstudents refine their techniques within a variety of media. If field trips areplanned, information and permission slips to be signed and returned will be included in the email.SUPERVISION AND CAMPUS SECURITYLower and Middle <strong>School</strong> students are to be dropped off and picked up at the locations designated within each teacher’s introductoryemail or, if attending morning care, escorted into the Lower <strong>School</strong> Commons and signed in by a parent or guardian. LUNCHES AND SNACKSStudents enrolled in half-day sessions should bring a drink and snack each day. A short break is included during each class. Studentsenrolled in full day classes will eat with their teacher and classmates. They may bring a lunch or, if entering Kindergarten orhigher grades, enjoy a freshly prepared meal at the Tartan Cafe.Please be aware we have students with food allergies. You may send the snacks your child prefers without restrictions; however,please instruct your child not to share any food while at school.THE TARTAN CAFEEach day, several entrees, along with a selection of fresh salads, fruits, and dessert, will be available. Entrees will include chickensandwiches or tenders, burgers, deli sandwiches, and pizza. Menu choices will be consistent with the school year options. Studentsentering grades K-5 will be able to select one entrée, one side, a beverage, (juice, milk or bottled water), and one dessert each dayduring the week(s) enrolled. Students entering grades 6-12 will be able to select one entree, two sides, fruit or salad, one dessertand a 20oz. fountain drink (with one refill).A weekly meal plan for the Tartan Café can be selected online with your course registration. The cost will be billed to your <strong>Lake</strong><strong>Highland</strong> account. The rate for Kindergarten-5th grade is $35/week; 6th-12th grade is $40/week. The Tartan Cafe will not be openJune 29th - July 2nd. Classes will not meet July 3rd.If you have purchased the lunch plan during a week your child will be off-campus due to a field trip, the cafeteria will provide a baglunch.Students who are not enrolled in a weekly lunch plan may still purchase a lunch, drinks, or snacks. Cash is the only accepted paymentmethod. Meal tickets from the 2014-2015 school year and personal checks will not be accepted.Middle and Upper <strong>School</strong> students are not to leave campus for lunch. They must be on campus until the conclusion of classeach day.TRANSPORTATION• Parents must remain in cars when in the carpool lanes. Teachers or coaches will assist students. Parking is not allowed inthese lanes.• Do not stop teachers after school for unscheduled conversations. Most teachers have an assigned traffic duty; it is vital they be inposition on time for the safety of the students.• Please discuss with your child the importance of good behavior while waiting to be picked up and the importance of listeningfor names to be called.• Cell phone use while operating a vehicle on campus is prohibited. If you must place or accept an emergency call, please parkin a designated parking place to do so. This is a vital safety issue and violators will be reported to Security and the Office of thePresident.• Lower <strong>School</strong> students are to be dropped off and picked up at the Bradshaw Lower <strong>School</strong> building. Summer instructors willemail additional information to each family stating specific location, front or back of the building.• Middle <strong>School</strong> classes will be meeting on the Charles Clayton Campus. Drivers enter and exit campus from Shine Street, Gate 2.• Upper <strong>School</strong> students should park in the <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Highland</strong> Athletic Complex (LHAC) lot.• Students participating in Athletic Camps will be notified by coaches and instructed where to drop-off and/or pickup, eitherin front of the Lower <strong>School</strong> Bradshaw Building, the Charles Clayton Middle <strong>School</strong>, or the <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Highland</strong> Athletic Complex.Morning drop-off may differ from the afternoon pickup point.Summer Spectacular 2015 | 4

Please refer to the Summer Spectacular informationpage found at www.lhps.org -Summer Spectacular for updates.EXTENDED CARELOWER SCHOOLExtended Care is located in The Commons, the upper level of the Lower <strong>School</strong> Library, and is available for students enrolled inLHPS summer programs June 8th–July 24th. The morning session, 7:30–9:00, includes stories, coloring, and quiet games. The childrenare escorted to their morning classes. Afternoon sessions, 2:00-3:30, 2:00-5:45, or 3:30- 5:45, include crafts and group games.If your child is not picked up from class by the specified time, s/he will automatically be admitted into our Extended Care programand you will be charged a $22.00 drop-in fee. Children must be picked up from Extended Care no later than 5:45. There is a latecharge of $1.00 per minute for every minute after 5:45 PM. <strong>School</strong>-year policies are followed during the summer months. If you areinterested, please complete the extended care section of the registration form. See page 45 for pricing and details.MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT UNIONStudent Union will meet on the Charles Clayton Campus June 8th–July 17th. Several options are available as there are two differentdismissal times, 2:00 and 3:30. Students are to report to the Middle <strong>School</strong> Office at dismissal time. If your child is not pickedup from his or her summer school class by the specified time, your child will automatically be admitted into Student Union and a$22.00 drop-in fee will be charged to you. Students will be transported to the Bradshaw Campus (main campus), via LHPS vans,at 3:30. Students will join Extended Care located in The Commons, the upper level of the Lower <strong>School</strong> Library. Students mustbe picked up from Student Union no later than 5:45. There is a late charge of $1.00 per minute for every minute after 5:45 PM.<strong>School</strong>-year policies are followed during the summer months. If you are interested, please complete the Student Union section ofthe registration form.See page 46 for pricing and details.DRESS CODEStudents are not required to wear the school year uniforms, but are asked to wear closed-toe or athletic shoes. Middle <strong>School</strong> Math Sense (entering 7th–8th grade)Designed for Middle <strong>School</strong> students who want to gain a mathematics advantage while expanding their understanding of concepts,this course covers the basics from number sense and operational skills to more complex concepts such as interpretive analysis,deductive logic, and inference skills. Students will receive one-on-one and small group assistance completing topics through anon-line math program. Intense weeklong instruction will prepare students for immediate competitive success as LDdebate novices in the 2015-2016 Season. Students will be guided through the same process that the Upper <strong>School</strong> Lincoln-Douglasteam utilizes to prepare for competition. Through the process, they will learn the basic skills of argumentation, how to research,how to construct cases, how to prepare rebuttal arguments, how to make use of cross-examination time, and how to weigh and winarguments. In addition, students will be introduced to some of the main philosophical arguments that are utilized in LD debate.Prior to this week, students will select a camp topic and complete background readings and assignments. Extended CareExtended Care is located in The Commons, the upper level of the Lower <strong>School</strong> Library, and is available for students enrolledin LHPS summer programs June 8th–July 24th. The morning session, 7:30–9:00, includes stories, coloring, and quiet games.The children are escorted to their morning classes. Afternoon sessions, 2:00-3:30, 2:00-5:45, or 3:30- 5:45, include crafts andgroup games. If your child is not picked up from his or her summer school class by the specified dismissal time, your child willautomatically be admitted into our Extended Care program and you will be charged a $22.00 drop-in fee. Middle <strong>School</strong> Student Union(entering 7th-8th grade)Student Union serves as a gathering place for 7th and 8th grade students from dismissal of their class until parent pickup. StudentUnion meets on the Charles Clayton Campus June 8th–July 17th. Several options for these afternoon sessions are available asthere are two different dismissal times, 2:00 and 3:30. Students are to report to the Middle <strong>School</strong> Office at dismissal time. If yourchild is not picked up from his or her summer school class by the specified time, your child will automatically be admitted intoStudent Union and a $22.00 drop-in fee will be charged. Students will be transported to the Bradshaw Campus (main campus),via LHPS vans, at 3:30. Students will join Extended Care located in The Commons, the upper level of the Lower <strong>School</strong> Library.Students must be picked up from Student Union no later than 5:45. <strong>Highland</strong>er AquaticsSwim Lessons (Ages 2–14)<strong>Highland</strong>er Aquatics and <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Highland</strong> <strong>Preparatory</strong> <strong>School</strong> are pleased to offer a complete SwimAmerica instructional program.SwimAmerica is the learn-to-swim program of the American Swimming Coaches Association, the most prestigious swim coaches’association. The program is taught in ten stations ranging from blowing bubbles for our toddlers to learning the four competitivestrokes for our Lower- & Middle-<strong>School</strong>ers. Every student progresses at his/her own rate, independent of the other students’development. In this program, the aquatic experts — the coaches — teach your child. SwimAmerica teaches much more than justhow to swim. Proper techniques of swimming are emphasized with care given to correct breathing, body position, movement oflimbs and timing. Proficiency leads to achievement and self-esteem.<strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Highland</strong> will be offering seven weeks of lessons for ages 2–14. Each session consists of Monday–Thursday lessons for aspecific half hour for a week. Group and private lessons are available each half hour. Lessons are available in the mornings from8:00 to 11:00 and in the afternoons from 3:00 to 7:00. This is a great program to get your child in the waterfor fitness and fun during the hot summer months. The primary goals of the team will be to have fun and learn about competitiveswimming. This program will include the basics of competitive swimming, including stroke mechanics of all four strokes, racingstarts, and racing turns. Each child must be able to swim Freestyle and Backstroke for at least 25 yards to participate on the team.The summer team also provides the opportunity to compete in “low-key” novice competitions against swimmers of similar ability.An 8-week session with various practice days and times will begin on Monday, June 8th, and run through Friday, July 31st.
