The newMobile Phone Application Developmentprogram is designed to provide studentswith an introduction to the mobilephone applications market. Students attending<strong>Glen</strong> <strong>Oaks</strong> <strong>Community</strong><strong>College</strong> will now havethe option of studyinga new associate degreeprogram that will offerthree different choices ofemphasis in the visual arts.Beginning with the fall2013 semester, GOCC willoffer an Associate of Artsin Visual Arts degree withemphasis in three differentareas: Fine Art, GraphicDesign and CommercialPhotography.According to MichaelNorthrop, GOCC professorof art, program development hasbeen in the works for some time.“We put together a team of designprofessionals, local businessrepresentatives, faculty andstudents from GOCC,” saysNorthrop. “Over the past twoPage 4New Visual ArtsThree new programs prepare studentsAlthough formal training is not required,those who earn a bachelor’s or master’sdegree in fine arts, can improve their skillsand job prospects according to the Bureauof Labor Statistics.Artists have an imagination and passion for creativity. Theyhave an eye for beauty and express their feelings throughtheir work.years, we held a series of meetingsto discuss different art programpossibilities and we began toidentify different needs in thevisual arts.”Northrop says the team researchedthe demand for visual artprograms, while takinginto considerationprograms offeredthrough other schools,the strengths of theexisting fine artsprogram and the spacerequirements that wouldbe necessary to start theprogram.“In particular, the St. JosephCounty Intermediate SchoolDistrict had a tremendous amountof interest in the graphic designprogram, and was interested inteaming up with us to be ableto offer it through the Careerand Technical Educationofferings,” says Northrop.“Career Technical Educationin St. Joseph County isalways working to meet theneeds of the students in ourlocal districts,” says GinnyKowalski, director of CTEfor the St. Joseph CountyIntermediate School District.“In the past few years,students have requested aCTE program where theycan utilize their art skillsand explore careers relatedto art,” says Kowalski. “TheGraphic Design programexplores art, design andcolor through MAC computersutilizing such software as AdobeInDesign, Adobe Illustratorand Adobe Flash. now at the <strong>Oaks</strong>for careers in the Visual ArtsCommercial PhotographyFine ArtGraphic Designphotography,” saysNorthrop, addingthat commercialphotographers are indemand and studentscan pretty much startworking as freelancephotographers right outof the associate’s program.“With so many products andservices offered online, there isan increased need for commercialphotography,” says Northrop.“As part of the commercialphotography program, we wantedto be able to teach darkroomtechniques, while at the same time,offer digital imaging coursework.”Northrop added that GOCC’sRobert Bartholomew, part-timeart professor, recently discovereda way to create negativesfrom digital camera files usingPhotoShop. As a result of thistechnique, students are not requiredto purchase a film-fed camera forthe course.The curriculum for the newVisual Arts programs offersstudents everything from thegeneral studies areas including thescience and math requirements“With so many products and servicesoffered online, there is an increasedneed for commercial photography,”– Michael Northropfor other associate programs. Theprograms are fully transferable intobaccalaureate programs.Northrop said the new offeringwill require increased space toaccommodate studios and anApple-based computer lab. Withdrawalprocedures and specific refund dates are available in theRegistration Office.Return of Title IV (Federal) Financial AidThe federal government mandates that students who withdrawfrom all classes may only keep the financial aid they have“earned” up to the time of withdrawal. Student Support ServicesOur goal: Your successFirst and foremost, if you feel you are slipping and havingdifficulty in a course, meet with the instructor and talk aboutit. One-on-one time to clarify some material may be what isneeded.<strong>Glen</strong> <strong>Oaks</strong> also offers peer tutoring in the Tutoring andTesting Center (TTC). Peer tutors are selected for theircommunications skills and excellence in specific academicareas. Many tutors are certified through the <strong>College</strong>Reading and Learning Association. The TTC is open 8a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 4p.m. on Fridays. A schedule may be arranged to assist youwith the course material. The TTC also offers tips on notetaking, methods of studying, taking tests and quizzes. Thisis a free service many students take advantage of whileat GOCC. Stop in the TTC and complete a tutor requestsheet.Another way to achieve success is involvement in TRiOStudent Support Services. 2013 Study Abroad Tour to Ireland is scheduled for MayProfessor Jeanne Reed reports that it is not too late to sign up for the 2013Study Abroad tour to Ireland. “The 12-day tour is open to both students andthe public and will include Shannon, Killarney, Cork, Dublin and Belfast,”says Reed. The group will be exploring much of the Republic of Ireland andNorthern Ireland. Departure date is May 13, 2013.The group will journey around the Ring of Kerry where they will visit sitessuch as a bog village, Killarney, Kinsale and Cork. The group will explorecastles at Killkenny and Blarney where they will have the opportunity tokiss the Blarney Stone.The tour will proceed to Dublin where the group will tour the city andvisit St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Kilmainham Jail and Trinity <strong>College</strong> to seethe library and the Book of Kells as well as tour the city. They will learnthe legacies of saints, writers and revolutionaries of the Irish struggle forIndependence.Also on the itinery is a tour of Belfast and a trip to the Giant’s Causeway, afacinating geological phenomenon, and a stop at a distillery.
