CANADA.r. F. X. JOSEPH MICHAUD,Buctouche, Kent County, N.B.,was born at Madawaska,N. B., February i4th, 1841. He is theson of Fimin Michaud and Marie RoyLausier. He received his early educationat the <strong>com</strong>mon schools of Madawaska,and then entered St. Ann'sCollege, Quebec, where he received his<strong>com</strong>mercial, classical and theologicaleducation. He was ordained priest atSt. John, N.B., June loth, 1867, byBishop Sweeney. After ordination, hewas curate at the Cathedral, and hadcharge of several missions aroundSt. John. He was then appointed toSt. Peter's Church, Portland, N.B., forabout four years, after which he wasappointed senior priest, at the Cathedral,St. John, and in 1876, was madepastor of Buctouche Church. Sincebeing there, he has built a very largeconvent, which is under the supervisionof the Sisters of Charity. In 1879, thechurch was nearly destroyed by acyclone, and most of the buildingsaround were destroyed. He then builta large presbytery. After the destructionof the church by the cyclone,it was rebuilt, but in May, 1886, it wasburnt to the ground, and after theframe work had again been erected,itwas blown down. The newchurch is now (1893) nearly<strong>com</strong>pleted, and is a very finebuilding. Father Michauddrew himself the plans of allthose buildings, and superintendedthe whole work per-Many men wouldsonally.have been discouraged byall these disasters, but itwas not so with FatherMichaud, they only servedto nerve him with renewedenergy and determination toerect a building more worthyof the Roman CatholicChurch, and better fitted forthe worship of AlmightyGod. While the misfortunesto the Church weresupposed to be disastrousto the religious welfare of thepeople, yet in the Providenceof God, they have resultedin good. Father Michaudtakes a great interest in encouragingfarming, and superintendswhat is known asthe Model Farm, for thebenefit of his parishioners.In 1 88 1,he ac<strong>com</strong>paniedthe Bishopto Rome.
